Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in the world being played in one form or another for almost 1000 years and originating with Native Americans in Canada
Lacrosse is flourishing at an international level with the sport establishing itself particularly in Europe and East Asia
Over 1000000 players worldwide; 30-40000 in Europe 2013 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup (Canada): 20 countries 2014 Men’s Lacrosse World Cup (USA): 40 countries
Background and history
In 2000 the sport was introduced in the Netherlands It has now become the Netherlands’ fastest growing team
sport with over 850 players in 25 clubs and an estimated 25% yearly growth
In 2012 the Netherlands hosted the Lacrosse European Championships in Amsterdam
Dutch Involvement
To become a world class lacrosse country in 15 years
We Have a Dream
Create sustainable programs for men and women’s top sport
Integrate international participation initiatives into the programs
By 2018 consistently rank within the top 3 European lacrosse countries.
By 2023 consistently rank within the global top 6 lacrosse countries
By 2028 be prepared for introduction of lacrosse in the possible 2028 ‘Dutch’ Olympic Games and consistently rank within the global top 3 lacrosse countries
Fulfilling the Dream
WDNT and MDNT Development Programs are open to everyone
Besides players, development programs target coaches and parents
The programs are the breeding grounds for the national teams
The programs provide a framework for international participation initiatives
The programs are self-sustaining
