Topic: Non-verbal behavior

Presentation

Description

• The communication without words. The face is used a great deal. Hand signals, shrugs, head movements, etc. also are used.

Non-verbal behavior is commonly called body language.

Non-verbal aspects were a significant part of communication. It can be used for: + Expressing emotion (e.g. smiling to show happiness) + Conveying attitudes (e.g. staring to show aggression) + Demonstrating personality traits (e.g. open palms to show accepting qualities) + Supporting verbal communication Non-verbal behavior also varies across cultures (such as the ‘ok’ finger O), although the six major emotions (anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness and surprise) are common across the world.

Types of nonverbal behavior

1. Body language:2. Facial expression:3. Posture4. Eyes contact5. Gesture6. Touch

Human faces are incredibly expressive including the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and any other movement. Emotions such as anger, happiness, hurt, and boredom are all easily expressed with facial movements.

1. Facial expression

How you carry yourself including bearing, stance, rigidity, uprightness. Whether you are leaning back comfortably, sitting rigidly on the edge of your seat, or leaning back with your eyes close, you convey a message via your posture and positioning.

2. Posture

People often attribute trustworthiness to people who speak while maintaining good eye contact and vice versa. Eye contact is also used to convey interest and emotions, and to promote rapport with the receiver of the message. It is also used to feign interest, mislead, and fake interest.

3. Eyes contact

Especially hand gestures are rich conveyors of communication. the  conscious  gestures  such  as  scratching  your  nose,  stroking your hair,  tugging on your clothes, placing your hands on your hips,  and  waving  communicate  messages  advertently  or inadvertently.

4.Gesture

Touch is a powerful method of nonverbal communication. A pat on the  back,  a  hug,  a  person  reaching  out  to  touch  your  hand  in sympathy communicate with or without accompanying words.

5. Touch

Example

Military air marshallers use hand and body gestures to direct flight operations aboard aircraft carriers.

The high five is a celebratory hand  gesture that  occurs when  two  people simultaneously  raise  one hand  each,  about  head-high, and  push,  slide,  or  slap  the flat  of  their  palm  against  the flat palm of the other person.

In basically, a hug express the friendship or love. However, different hugs carry different meanings, for example a one shoulder hug is often a sign of friendship while a hug where one puts the hands on the lower back shows that the person may be in love or wants more from the relationship.

When people encounter people or things that they like, the rate  of  blinking  increases  and  pupils dilate. Looking  at another person can indicate a range of emotions, including hostility, interest and attraction.

∗ The gesture of moving hand when talking is normal, comfortable when talking in italia, and some other europan countries

∗ In japan: impolite (some Asia countries is also)
