The voice of international business community

AmERICAN ChAmBER OF COmmERCE IN SlOvENIA – AmChAm SlOvENIA • YEARBOOK 2012/13
Dear Members,
as the AmCham Slovenia represents a business community that operates according to the principle of incorporation and desire for
development, I wish to thank you sincerely for our joint endeavors in creating an open space, for our common wish for Slovenia to be
diverse and internationally integrated and for our mutual request for new investments which would denote the end of the capital crunch.
There exists an interest in investments into Slovenian companies. The advantage of Slovenia definitely lies in its geo-strategic position.
We are situated within the heart of Central Europe and also represent a part of the history of South-Eastern Europe for which we are
very familiar with the region. We are acknowledged as a country with a high level of professionalism and of well-educated employees.
If we link the favorable geo-strategic position with the highly educated population, the high professionalism and relatively high quality
of life, we can state that Slovenia could be an extremely interesting country. The investments can be made not only for rational reasons
but also with heart. It is therefore very important to know how to present our advantages well.
Unfortunately, Slovenia has quite a problem in attracting foreign investments. The problem lies in the system, which is rigid and closed.
Slovenia has been on the basis of the international criteria assessed as a country that does not encourage foreign investments.
Slovenia has to open! We need to find a model that would enable us to become more flexible as a state and more integrated into global
flows which would thus prevent us from becoming an isolated island. I am glad that many of experts within the AmCham Committees
contribute to it with their constructive suggestions. Fear of foreign-owned companies is absurd as the social note must always be
present. If the company` s employees are not satisfied, it automatically means that the company does not have a sustainable model.
Irrespective of the kind of a company, being either a production one or a company of service activities or high tech, the people working in
it are always the key to success. It is the people who make the difference.
Many Slovenians successfully work in the international environment and they bring value to the environment they work in. You will find
a lot about this topic in our new Yearbook. Some Slovenians work in important companies all over the world and occupy demanding
and responsible positions. And yet, they derive from a small Slovenia. Everyone who decides to return brings back some added value to
Slovenia. They namely see the world from a broader perspective. The view of Slovenia from the outside is much more positive than from
the inside. Although the economic indicators and the economic and political situation at the present do not speak in favor of us, I am very
proud when I have an opportunity to represent Slovenia. We have to succeed!
I am an eternal and realistic optimist. When I observe our AmCham Young Professionals, their ambitions and desires, everything gets
me even more motivated. We need more networking, more cooperation and above all we have to feel the awareness that we are all
in the same boat. I will be glad if we will all as the international business community contribute to this awareness.
Sincerely,
Matej Potokar, MBAPresident of the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovenia – AmCham Slovenia

LETTER FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Dear Friends,
Like Americans, Slovenians have undergone some tough times in recent years and are facing the same prospect of budget cuts and
other hard to accept, but in my view, overdue and necessary reforms. As both our countries come to terms with the impact and
depth of this crisis - which continues to influence both our economies and our political culture -- we also begin to more courageously
confront the factors that contribute to our current situation.
As we debate the way forward and some question the appropriateness -- even the necessity -- of measures designed to rein in
spending and spur growth, let us also not be afraid to give equal time to examine some of the underlying historical and political
reasons behind these difficulties. It is becoming increasingly evident that the lack of political will to overcome and come to terms with
historical divisions is overshadowing Slovenia’s achievements of the last two decades. Similarly, a lack of political will in America has
exacerbated our economic problems and the political divisiveness in America has rendered reasonable compromise far more difficult.
Key economic and social reforms are needed to resuscitate the Slovene economy. Slovenes need to be able to make informed
decisions about the challenges facing the country -- and the media must provide more balanced, accurate information to help them
do so. Instead, much of the media seem to seek to continue politicization favoring one side or another. Slovenia has much to gain
from opening its economy to foreign investment, privatization, and increased transparency in public procurement; yet these changes
can only be adopted and implemented when leaders bridge the chasm between the left and the right. The political courage to
overcome these ideological differences is vital to Slovenia’s prosperity.
This year, Slovenia and the U.S. have a new opportunity to elect national leaders who may choose to place the welfare of the country
above self-interest and political ideology. Despite its hardships, this crisis creates a valuable and unique opportunity for our leaders
to bridge past divisions to ensure the future prosperity of our nations.
Another great year of cooperation has passed with one of our most valued partners, the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovenia.
I continue to be inspired by its enthusiasm in seeking to improve the business climate and the efforts of its members to advance U.S.
and Slovenian commercial goals. I congratulate AmCham, its committees and members for all their hard work and dedication, and look
forward to what we can accomplish together in the next year.
Sincerely,
Joseph A. Mussomeli Ambassador of the United States of America to Slovenia

As an EU Member State, Slovenia has to
respond to economic challenges and adopt
strategies which will take into account
the changing economic environment.
AmCham Slovenia as one of the most
active international business associations
in Slovenia, with more than 220 corporate
members, who create important number
of jobs and noticeable part of Slovene GDP,
can help to facilitate this process. Our long
term goal is to improve the investment
opportunities and business environment
in Slovenia, so that the conduct of business
will be easier for Slovenian, international
and US companies and would lead to the
enlargement of the standard of living of all
Slovenian citizens.
For achieving this goal and making
Slovenia more attractive to FDI – AmCham
Slovenia advocates and operates through
Committees. Position Papers prepared by
AmCham Committees contain proposals
and solutions on how to stimulate the
economic growth and are regularly
presented to the Slovenian Government.
Members of the AmCham Committees who
have expert knowledge and professional
backgrounds in the fields such as taxation,
labor, public procurement, IPR, CSR,
environment and spatial planning are
familiar with the needs of companies
and with the feedback from potential
investors. We would like to express our
deepest gratitude to all Committee’s active
members who dedicate their knowledge,
time and energy to help creating better
opportunities. AmCham Slovenia is proud
to present eight AmCham Committees and
all experts operating within.

AmERICAN ChAmBER OF COmmERCE IN SlOvENIA – AmChAm SlOvENIA • YEARBOOK 2012/13
In 2010 we introduced a notably
successful and free of charge AmCham
Young Professionals Program™ meant
for promising young people – the active
generation between 25 and 33 years
of age – employed by the members
of AmCham Slovenia. The Program
of interactive workshops, trainings,
meetings with top business leaders, field
excursions, instructions for career building
and lectures with experts from different
fields of expertise helps them at their
development and establishes an inter-
branch and multi-professional business
“network”, which will be of a great
assistance at their work in the future.
Requirements for applying for the
Program are the following – the
participants should be proposed by
their leaders, managers, who thus prove
their determination in encouraging
their employees, especially the young
ones, and enable them to develop in a
business and personal way. A leadership
potential, principles of ethics, effort for
working successfully, persistence, wish for
developing own personality, improvement
of one s own competences, being a role
model among colleagues of generation
– all together are the qualities we are
searching for in the participants.
In 2012, the Program AmCham Young Professionals™, has after several years of development
reached an appropriate level of individuality, creativity and recognizability and thus became
righteously eligible for the copyright protection as the intellectual property of AmCham
Slovenia and its team that developed it, and the same goes also for the brand AmCham
Young Professionals™ itself.

AmCham young Professionals™
Some of the participants from each
generation convinced us with their
professional attitude and showed us that
they possess certain qualities of a young
business leader. For latter we upgraded
our program to the next level with the
so-called AmCham Mentor Program,
which comprises an even better transfer
of experiences, knowledge, views and
business practice. We would like to thank
once again to all the mentors for their
readiness and their social responsibility.
Five super finalists of the 2nd Generation
were chosen in 2012, together with the
Leadership and Talent Development
Committee, and the title of the AmCham
Young Professional Top Potential of the
Year 2012 has been among them awarded
to Nana Šumrada Slavnič, doctor iuris,
PwC d.o.o.
At the present we are continuing with
the 3rd Generation of AmCham Young
Professionals Program™ into which 57
companies enrolled 90 participants.
The 4th Generation of AmCham Young
Professionals Program™ is planned for
June 2013. Members may expect the
invitations for the enrolment of their young

Do you have an experience
of professional life in Slovenia
or abroad to share? What are the
advantages and disadvantages
of one or the other?
I am lucky to have both types of
experience. After my studies in the
United States, I worked at the European
Court of Justice in Luxembourg as
a legal adviser (référendaire) to the
Slovene judge for five years and prior
to that, as an intern in a major Spanish
law firm in Madrid. Currently, I am
Manager for tax and legal matters at
PricewaterhouseCoopers Slovenia and
Manager of the PwC CEE region for
European direct taxation matters. I see
important advantages in both types
of work, thus I believe it is beneficial to
combine best of “both worlds”.
When working abroad, you start off as a
tabula rasa in a way, where you depend on
your integrity, technical knowledge, skills,
and your ability to enhance them. More
AMCHAM TOP POTENTIAL OF THE yEAR 2012
often than not, you are forced outside
of your comfort zone which challenges
you to develop your technical, emotional
and social intelligence. Competition is
fierce, which makes you discover your
bottom-line strengths and weaknesses.
This is especially true if your work abroad
is linked to your building an entirely new
business and social network, which
was true for me. Also, I was lucky to
have met and worked with impressively
intelligent and skillful individuals, which
inspired me to develop my specialism, my
professionalism and my humanity.
Working in Slovenia has great advantages,
such as familiarity with the market and
social conventions, great quality of life
and relative comfort in terms of work-
life balance. There is also a sense of
contribution to your own economy and
nation, which represents a different
dimension to the sense of work and
human utility in a foreign market. I
personally truly appreciate closeness of my
family as I have missed this aspect during
my prolonged absence from Slovenia.
There are certainly disadvantages to both
types of experience but I like to see them
as challenges. One aspect which probably
presents the most interesting side-
effect of changing various jurisdictions
for work purposes is a great difference
between their work cultures. Necessary
adjustments prove one’s flexibility and
adaptability.
What has the AmCham Young

lies, I believe, in creation of a network
combining business intelligentia with an
international flavor. For me personally,
it provides an encouraging environment
and a circle that may be matched to
alumnae circles of which I was a member
when living abroad. However, unlike with
circles abroad, I feel more engaged in
relation to my colleagues and somehow
proud of them as my compatriots.
What are your experiences with
AmCham Mentor-Mentee program?
I believe this is a par excellence tool to
engage young talents and give them/us a
unique access and opportunity to interact
with Slovene business leaders. I deeply
appreciate my mentor’s counsel in terms
of business and personal growth and I am
very thankful for the mentee experience.
What can the Top Potential of the
Year achieve as an opinion leader and
a role model?
When you are given word, it is important
to voice important matters, and to
encourage concrete actions. What can
an opinion leader achieve? If successful,
an opinion leader inspires others to take
actions, to make a difference. As per role
model, I can only hope to get close to the
idea in my colleagues’ eyes by living by
example and making a difference myself.
What is your message to the
senior colleagues that are leading
companies in Slovenia?
Take challenges head-on and see them
as a great opportunity rather than a
crippling obstacle. Be open to new ideas
as overcoming crisis may require radically
different takes and original formulas for
success. Take actions with responsibility
and with optics of giving (at least a part)
back to the society.
Which are the most important
turning points in your life?
Professionally, first step towards my current
career was being admitted to Harvard
Law School. A second turning point was
having had the opportunity to work at the
European Court of Justice, for sharpening
my technical skills and for opportunities of
stimulating academic debates it gave me.
And finally, joining the private sector and
PricewaterhouseCoopers Slovenia.

In 2012 we introduced and developed a new business network – the AmCham Young Leader’s Club. The initiative and the need for such network came from individuals who saw the benefits of networking through various programs and projects of AmCham Slovenia. They acknowledged the importance of networking and sharing best practices, which lead to successful business making.
AmCham Young Leader’s Club is a new network intended for those who participated and
successfully finished AmCham Young Professionals Program™ and also for those who participate
at AmCham Mentor Program. They are young, ambitious, successful young business leaders
who represent role models and new standards for business leadership. An important
element of the program will also include the social responsibility projects.

BUSINESS LEADERS FROM ABROAD AND SLOVENE BUSINESS LEADERS wHO wORk FOR MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANIES – AND THEy ALL CREATE VALUE FOR SLOVENIA
General Manager, BISNODE d.o.o.
How do you find your life in Slovenia?
Quiet and balanced on one side, challenging on
the other. It is very easy in Slovenia for a “working
mother” as also I am, to organize family life and
work as the welfare and school system are very
supportive. Quality of life is one of the national
top priorities. On the other side, I struggle to find
people with the courage to be different, to live
and show their passions, to think big.
What are the positive business practices in
Slovenia?
Slovenians are extremely reliable. If you agree on
the deadline and on the standard quality of the
deliverables you shall not expect any surprises.
At the same time workforce is well educated and
flexible: they both are the necessary qualities for
continually improving companies.
What needs to be changed
in the Slovenian business environment?
Firstly - Labor regulations. Labor
force is too expensive and not superior enough
compared to the neighboring countries to justify
the cost difference. Secondly - Transparency.
Governance of Slovenian companies should
be made more strictly transparent and
controllable and the business moral standards
should increase. Thirdly - Connections. Today
connections to and from Slovenia are extremely
difficult and costly. A desirable and competitive
business destination is easily reachable.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Bisnode is “Passion for business”.
Our priorities are clear: employees first,
customer second since our staff is testimonial
of our values and the “tool” to engage
customers. Our managers must be coaches;
we have a precise talent management program
and a clear succession plan. Our KPI is the
engagement index that we measure
on yearly basis. Still we do not do what we
cannot measure: efficient processes and clear
key performance indicators are the basis for
continuous improvement approach.
Could you share your career story related to
the value passion to work?
My career is a long-lasting love story with my
business. My passion is information: create
accurate, widely accessible and unbiased
information. I took many tough decisions and
sacrifices but I have always been rewarded
with a great freedom at realizing my projects,
significant “mentor and sponsor” support
from my bosses and owners and great human
relations with my teams.
Name three breaking points in your career
• 1992: I left my humanistic academic career
and started my business life.
• 1995: I passed to digital business to launch
the first internet-based
for-pay information database in Europe.
• 2002: I started to work at Bisnode
and met my CEO and mentor Lars Save.
He supported me at experimenting and
creating something completely new. When
I searched for approval he would say: “The
market is your only judge”.
Name three facts about your company
• Bisnode grew 7 times in 7 years both in
revenues and bottom line.
• We started as a team of 11 in 2002 and are
now numbering 120.
• Bisnode started with 500 customers in
2002, and has 15.000 in 2012.

Advisor to Director, AVIAT d.o.o.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Slovenia has a record number of forums,
congresses and events talking about foreign
direct investment and how to improve its
competitiveness, when at the same time,
nothing has really improved on those subjects
in the last 10 years. I believe lack of investment
in general is caused by the fact that the
economy is still state owned. Therefore, I
believe the key change needed is a thorough
privatization of all the non-strategic assets.
What can we learn from multinational cor-
porations and what can they learn from us?
It is always interesting to see how it is done
“somewhere else” and the key point Slovenian
should learn from multinational corporations is
the relationship to the money: in the long term
it is rewarding for a company to pay its people
well! Money is a taboo in Slovenia and it’s time
we change that. On the other hand, I think big
multinational companies should learn how
entrepreneurs and businessmen make the most
of such small market. The market in Slovenia is
often the size of a “niche” in any other country.
Being successful working in one “niche” is
something Slovenia should be proud of!
How can Slovenia obtain its space on the
map of multinational corporations and how
can Slovenian branch have enough visibility
to be considered as important center or a
co-decision-maker?
Slovenia will always have to fight against the
unattractiveness of its home market. I believe
this could be tackled with an aggressive fiscal
regime, which would among other things, lower
the cost of labor, especially of experts and highly
educated people. This would make our market
more attractive for foreign investors, which
would evolve our industrial work field, as well
as raise attractiveness to experts from abroad.
This approach would not only stop the “brain-
drain“, but cultivate a space, where international
knowledge dissemination would appear and
raise innovation and research activities.
We shouldn’t forget that we have a lot of
knowledge, expertise, competences and good
working ethics in Slovenia, which should be
recognized as one of our most important
strengths in the multinational corporations.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Within the company I could say we try to keep a
leadership practice on three key basics – keeping
it simple, “stretchy“ (always being a bit out of our
comfort zone, learning something new) and fun.
One of the most important leadership
practices within our company would be
enrolling employees in innovative thinking
skills, practicing active listening and producing
fruitful working environment, with a lot of self-
motivation and good energy.
Could you share your career story related
to the value social responsibility?
The value of social responsibility is of big
importance to me. Not only I am a conscious
promoter of ecological policy in our company
(use of eco-friendly materials, waste
separation), I also try and return to the
community all the time.
One of my recent and very dear stories is a
team-building event we did with all of our
employees at Primary school Anton Jansa in
Radovljica. The whole team worked together
and renewed a classroom for a class of 8
students with special needs. The result was
beyond expected. It was great to see what we
can do together and make the children happy.
Name three breaking points in your career
• Becoming an entrepreneur in 1991 immedi-
ately after finishing the university, having no
idea what it meant and what it would bring
in my life.
• Selling my first company in 2002 to a big
Slovenian company.
• Starting to work for an American technology
company in 2009 and being a part of an
international publicly listed corporation.
Name three facts about your company
• Good team with a lot of technical expertise.
• Good professional and working environment,
good spirit among employees.
• Company which offers great career and
professional development.

VP & Managing Director EuroAsia Region, Veyance Technologies Europe d.o.o.
How do you find your life in Slovenia?
Slovenia is a great place to live, the natural
beauty of the country; its citizens and the safe
environment are high on its list of jewels.
What are the positive business practices in
Slovenia?
Company taxation rates are fair, although
individual rates are far too high. There is a good
comprehension of business despite Slovenia s
short history in capitalism. Others will likely not
agree, but on the balance of good and bad, I have
had positive experiences with labor flexibility.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Slovenia is a small country, everyone knows
everyone, which created an environment
of nepotism and bad business practices.
There must be more decisive handling of
irregularities without fear of reprisal. There
should be no favors to offenders as it would
compromise the well-being of the broader
population.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Creating a performance based culture, treating
every associate fairly and consistently,
developing managers, who lead by example and
build teams. Sincerity and modesty are critical in
order to enlist support. Having an environment
of trust has countless benefits.
Could you share your career story related
to the value accepting responsibility?
Accepting responsibility was so entrenched
in my upbringing that I cannot relate to any
career event of influence. Accountability
and responsibility are different, but equally
important. I think that these principles are
simply part of my character.
Name two breaking points in your career
• Becoming a general manager, being able
to break the ‘silos’ in organizations. The
‘buck’ stops with you, no excuses, your only
security is your performance.
• The international assignment as it allowed
me to grow within different aspects of life.
Name three facts about your company
• Veyance has certain core values such as
honesty and integrity which we treasure.
• We are not hierarchical, I believe in
management without titles.
• We are performance oriented. We have a
responsibility to drive value for both our
associates and our shareholders.

AmERICAN ChAmBER OF COmmERCE IN SlOvENIA – AmChAm SlOvENIA • YEARBOOK 2012/13
General Manager, IBM Slovenija d.o.o.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
We have to keep Slovenia on the map of the
most progressive countries within a wider region
as its future depends on a healthy economy. It
can be achieved only with successful business
stories that will be met with a wide response
beyond the borders of our country. We have
the knowledge, we have the motivation, what
we are missing is a bit of optimism, which must
necessarily lead our business decisions in the
near future.
What can we learn from multinational
corporations and what can they learn from
us?
Corporations are based on reliable business
models that in practice work for decades and
already for a century in the case of IBM. IBM
has undergone some stirring era, full of social
changes as it remained loyal to its values and
was not afraid of changes. I advise the same
also to the local companies as the reasonable
risk means a path to success.
How can Slovenia obtain its space on the
map of multinational corporations and how
can Slovenian branch have enough visibility
to be considered as an important center or
a co-decision-maker?
A small-sized Slovenia may have a lot to say
but it is necessary also to stand out, to be bold.
We at the IBM Slovenia are very proud of our
referential projects that were for the first time
implemented right here in Slovenia and have
achieved a worldwide recognition. We need
modern business and IT solutions at which the
local branches of corporations, as IBM Slovenia
is, have an important role, as we see to a fast
transfer of the most advanced solutions from
the global to the local environment.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
New IBM global CEO study reveals three areas
that will shape the future business success
of CEO-s. They are focusing on the client,
management with inspiration and networking
of the leaders. In particular, the latter is of
great significance as the leaders will have
to increasingly integrate both internally and
externally, enter partnerships and create a new,
open way of doing business, which is based on
cooperation and exchange of ideas.
Could you share your career story related
to the value empathy?
The company is as successful as its employees
are. Therefore we need to pay special attention to
the relationship among colleagues. In this context
the ability of empathy has an important role. We
must respect the expertise of the others and be
willing to learn from everyone and especially to
know how to become accustomed to a situation of
another and help him to overcome the challenges.
Name three breaking points in your career
• Appointment of the Director General IBM
Slovenia.
• Positioning IBM Slovenia as the most
advanced country within IBM
in the CEE region.
• Implementation of the business stories that
have achieved global recognition.
Name three facts about your company
• Leading trendsetter in the domestic market
for over 70 years.
• More than 270 highly motivated and
qualified employees.
• Leading provider of advanced IT and

General Manager Slovenia, Philip Morris Ljubljana d.o.o.
How do you find your life in Slovenia?
I find it great! Friendly people, perfect geo
positioning, good infrastructure, wonderful
nature… I’ve met quite some expats in Slovenia
and none of them would complain. But what’s
the most important is that my family feels
good here.
What are the positive business practices
in Slovenia?
In our job we are in contact both with small and
big businesses and overall I would highlight
that customers respect each other, keep their
promises and do the business in a fair manner.
What needs to be changed in the
Slovenian business environment?
Some things could be definitely simplified and
streamlined. To give just one example – Labor
Law – obviously requires significant simplification
and bringing it closer to the reality of today.
Another point, which I believe is relevant for
Slovenia and goes beyond business environment,
is the general positiveness of society and belief
in a better future. Of course we all need to be
realistic and adaptive to the new reality both in
business and in our private lives but yet being
overly concerned and dramatizing everything
doesn’t help to move forward. And positive
things exist and are happening every day, we just
need to notice them.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
I am a strong believer in leading by example and
fair and respectful treatment of the employees
regardless seniority and hierarchy. Another
important leadership practice which is widely
spread in our organization is openness towards
new ideas at every level.
Could you share your career story
related to the value professionalism?
Professionalism, in every aspect of this definition,
is something which, I believe, you can see and feel
in our organization no matter where you are and
who you deal with. I could witness it myself as
when I moved to Slovenia I met many profes-
sionals and, despite all the possible concerns of
upcoming changes, felt very professional treat-
ment at every level of organization.
Name three breaking points in your career
• Move from Sales to Marketing at one stage
of my career development.
• Being in charge of organization with over
200 employees at my previous assignment.

How do you find your life in Slovenia?
Slovenia has many natural beauties and
historical sites. The country has a lot
to offer, there are many talented and well
educated people.
What are the positive business practices in
Slovenia?
Slovenia can offer quality workforce as well
as quality companies. Its position, proximity
to the emerging markets of Europe, quality
of its infrastructure services, international
commercial contacts and transport system are
highly important for investors that wish to set
up operations with a hub in former Yugoslavia.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Some painful and meaningful reforms might
need to be implemented (e.g. labor, pension
and tax reforms). Changes could also be
necessary in the field of privatization of state
owned companies. In some ways, Slovenia
could be better at opening up its economy to
foreign investments and work harder to bring
investments here.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Acting professionally, doing business with
integrity, upholding our clients’ reputations
as well as our own, treating people and the
environment with respect, acting in a socially
responsible manner, working together and
thinking about the way we work, considering the
ethical dimensions of our actions. These are our
values, our code of conduct.
Could you share your career story related
to the value integrity?
Integrity should be the foundation of every
company, management and employee. My
career was also built on it. It means promptly
addressing problems, risks or issues in the
workplace, voicing concerns, consulting with
others, asking difficult questions, accepting
responsibility for outcomes and maintaining
standards of professionalism.

President of the Managing Board, Generali zavarovalnica d.d.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Slovenia must offer a stimulating and
encouraging business environment for
companies of all sorts and sizes, including
establishing appropriate tax and labor law
policy. We must strengthen the reputation
of management as a profession. This would
be a step back on the path of economic
growth. However, we must be aware -
it demands a lot of work.
What can we learn from multinational
corporations and what can they learn
from us?
We learn from each other all the time. Borders
are becoming state of mind more than physical
obstacles. The ability and willingness to learn
from other people - our parents, friends, co-
workers, competitors, and other corporations,
has become crucial. In Generali we are glad to
share best practices, because we believe that
knowledge is generated in a two-way process.
How can Slovenia obtain its space
on the map of multinational corporations
and how can Slovenian branch have enough
visibility to be considered as important
center or a co-decision-maker?
We have great base of knowledge, experience,
strong competences, we are hard and diligent
workers. But I believe that we often lack
ambition and self-confidence. With good,
effective ideas we should have courage to speak
loud and place Slovenia on the map of decision
makers.
Which leadership practice do you find
to be the most important within
your company?
Exemplary leadership. I strive to be a role
model for co-workers. My office doors
are open to employees, and I try to be
honest and constructive - also when it
comes to solving problems. I am loyal,
I trust my team and I believe in mutual
respect in all relations. This is also what
I expect from my employees.
Could you share your career story related
to the value creativity?
Everybody could and should be creative.
Creativity is the spice that adds flavor t
o our private life and business. It adds value
to our products and services. That is all that
matters. I consider Generali Zavarovalnica
as a good example of creativity in business. It
is derived from our client’s needs, courage and

President of the Board of Management, Lek d.d.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Slovenia should make its business
environment open, transparent,
nondiscriminatory and competitive.
In particular this means simple and efficient
administrative procedures, competitive taxation
(mostly labor), flexible labor laws & market,
a solid system of incentives for investments
and development.
What can we learn from multinational
corporations and what can they learn
from us?
MNCs have clear vision and strategies
in place. Execution is therefore key to
success. Interests of individuals are aligned
around the common objectives and properly
rewarded based on performance and
contribution to overall results. However,
although being a small economy and population,
there are areas of high expertise and knowledge
in Slovenia where we can be at the frontline of
global development.
How can Slovenia obtain its space on the
map of multinational corporations and how
can Slovenian branch have enough visibility
to be considered as important center or a
co-decision-maker?
Be creative, innovative, proactive, deliver what
you commit, push the boundaries and above all
believe in your teams. They can make it.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Team work. Creation of an idea is often an act
of an individual, execution very seldom. Success
rarely comes without failures on its way. Take
a failure as a lesson learnt and continue your
journey to the success.
Could you share your career story related
to the value vision?
Having a vision is one of the key attributes
of a leader. This is even more truly within our
industry where development times tend to be
very long. Let’s take an example. Fifteen years
ago we made a very important decision to enter
a new field of products now called biosimilars.
We had a very limited knowledge and expertise
about this field with
very few new medicines of this kind out there
in the markets. There were only few people
within the company sharing the enthusiasm
of a small group (including myself) pioneering
into this field. Today biosimilars represent the
most attractive and promising area offering
exceptional opportunities for growth. Lek is
one of the key pillars of Sandoz biosimilars and
Sandoz is a global leader in this field. Without
the vision and courage we would have missed it.

How do you find your life in Slovenia?
Living in Slovenia is very easy indeed. If I
compare it with other countries I have been
living in I would say that Slovenia is a safe place,
with a good infrastructure, good services and
last but not least not speaking the language
does not prevent you from having contact with
local population as English is widely spoken.
Slovenia is also very attractive if you like
beautiful nature, good food and wine and if you
care about the environment.
What are the positive business practices in
Slovenia?
I believe there is a lot of entrepreneurship in
Slovenia which all of us should treasure and
furthermore encourage. I also notice the
Young generation which is eager to learn,
to change things and to bring their country
to the next level.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Probably less bureaucracy to start with, more
flexibility in the labor law to cope with the still
high dependence on Export activities, more tax
incentives and a more friendly attitude towards
the foreign direct investments which should be
considered by all Businessmen and Politicians
as an opportunity more than a threat.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
I would say Building Talent and Teams together
with demonstrating courage in any kind of
business or managerial decision.
Could you share your career story related
to the value motivator?
I believe there are different ways of looking
at value motivator but if I would pick one of
them I would probably consider the need for
Companies and Employers to have a closer
and deeper relationship with their employees
and not only look at the performance aspect
through the rationale of the numbers or
the material side of their internal rewarding
systems or policies. There are less tangible
hidden motivators. I have observed in very
specific moments in my professional life that
Managers who really and sincerely care about
their employees when they face personal issues
always get a significant and long term return
on their investment.
God no, compassion is not old fashioned
and taking care is not waste of time even
in our material world and I dare say that
it is becoming increasingly important in our
more and more cold, impersonal and
anonymous society.
It happens to me that someone has a very
critical personal issue which was to some
extent impacting his professional and team
performance….
I see the manager taking his time to understand
the issue, to understand the magnitude of it
(as it is always hard when you are impacted
to show your emotion in a professional
environment, admit it is true and not minimize
it) and ultimately finding ways to help that
person beyond the simple rules of common
HR policies …
The impact on the person was not only
emotionally positive but I could in a long run
observe a fantastic motivation boost, an
engagement and a loyalty to the Company
which was out of norm …
Last but not least the reaction on the rest of
the team was also positive as they realized that
despite they were not affected, they could see
the values of the Company or the Management
they were working for.

What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
I would say that many areas in Slovenian
business environment are in a good shape and
should remain this way. But there are also areas
that need to be improved in a way to create
more open and supportive environment for
investors, including multinational companies.
The business environment in Slovenia would
benefit greatly, if multinational companies could
bring strong investments in human capital,
higher employment rates and enrichment of
local economies into our environment. Slovenia
should improve balancing between protection
of national industry and providing attractive
ground for foreign investors.
What can we learn from multinational
corporations and what can they learn
from us?
First of all I would say that both Slovenian
business environment as well as multinational
companies can learn a lot from each other.
By giving more opportunities to multinational
companies to operate in the Slovenian market,
we could learn how to better place our products
and services into other markets and also how to
develop domestic companies to be operational
and more competitive in the multinational
environment. On the other hand, multinational
companies could benefit from it as well - in
learning how to better operate in limited
markets with high national awareness.
How can Slovenia obtain its space on the
map of multinational corporations and how
can Slovenian branch have enough visibility
to be considered as important center or a
co-decision-maker?
Small sized affiliates are excellent grounds
to develop multitalented people and better
organized structure, as this is the only way
how such organization can be cost-effective
(excellent milieu for talent pool production).
It is also a perfect ground for pilot projects
which can be applied later on in bigger markets.
Slovenian branches due to their
size, optimized structure and their foundation
for talent development prove to be the ideal
place for the establishment of so-called “centers
of excellence”.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Leadership attributes which are very important
to me and also strongly supported by Amgen
are: Chart the Course; have well defined
goals, clear roles, and effective processes,
including behavioral clarity, in all areas of work.
Developing best possible team is another one,
followed by a results-oriented philosophy.
Acting as a role model is also very important in
order to constantly improve the quality of work
and corporate climate.
Among all I find self-confidence, integrity, strong
drive to achieve, and expertise in building and
leading teams as the most important leadership
components. Amgen gives to its employees
the ground for open communication which is in
addition a foundation for a successful business.
Could you share your career story related

That is usually recognized in good companies.
From there, all the rest happens naturally.

How do you find your life in Slovenia?
I like living in Slovenia. It is a convenient country
to live in since it has it all: mountains, sea, it is
very centrally located, has nice climate, good
food/wines and nice people. What else can you
wish for?
What are the positive business practices in
Slovenia?
Slovenia has a highly skilled and educated
workforce. Since the country is relatively small,
it is easy to identify the important stakeholders
and those people are in general open to be
contacted.
What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
It seems lately that there is a limited space left
for innovations. In order to bring new innovative
medicines to the market, providing additional
value over the existing drugs, we are being
asked to either lower the price at the level of 20
years old drugs or we need to lower the price of
other drugs to compensate for budget impact.
The planning cycle should switch from short
term to longer term where we can find mutual
agreements to create more stability in different
aspects of healthcare. This can and should be
done in a much more transparent and open way
then it is done currently.
Which leadership practice do you find to be
the most important within your company?
Enable others to act! My main objective is to
create an organization that can function on its
own and is less dependent on the MD. I need
to ensure that I create an environment with
the necessary resources, positive atmosphere,
opportunities to develop and trust so that
the employees will take responsibility and
ownership of not only their tasks but also on the
overall objectives of the company.
Could you share your career story related
to the value communications skills?
I truly believe that no matter what you do
communication is the key to success.
Different countries and cultures ask for
different communication styles/approaches.
When I first started to work in our US HQ I
maintained the same style of communication
as I did in the local market which meant I
stopped by peoples office instead of picking up
the phone or sending an email. When I entered
their offices the first question I got was if they
did something wrong which I experienced as
strange. It took me some time to realize that in
the culture of HQ people communicated mostly
by email or phone and only in cases where
things went wrong they stopped by each other’s
office. After clarifying to them that nothing
was wrong they realized that it was actually
pleasant to have a face to face conversation
and was sometimes more clarifying then
communicating by phone or email.

What needs to be changed in the Slovenian
business environment?
Slovenia is a place where it is nice and simple
to live, it is safe, there are short distances, good
country infrastructure, good social services
(medical, school…). But it has two big economic
deficiencies, too high taxes – especially personal
income incl. social and healthy contributions
is one of the highest in the world and weak
international logistics – especially international
flights. Slovenian business environment also
needs a vision and positive thinking.
What can we learn from multinational
corporations and what can they learn
from us?
Next to international expertise mostly we can
learn adaptability, understanding diversity and
inclusion. For the multinationals it is always
good to respect smaller economies and learn
how they can be internationally successful.
How can Slovenia obtain its space on the
map of multinational corporations and how
can Slovenian branch have enough visibility
to be considered as important center or a
co-decision-maker?
Domestic market is small and therefore less
attractive. People – skilled labor force with high
value added expertise can be the only driver
to get multinationals in Slovenia. Slovenian
branch of multinational can only have visibility
if it is internationally successful – and this can
be again only based on expertise. In Slovenia
we will never have a scale – so we should have
expertise.

are our far most important asset. Continuous
development of employees, forward thinking

contributes of our leadership.

What were the main decisions or
circumstances that led you to Santa
Clara Valley and how did you find the
Valley at the time of your arrival?
As a farm boy growing up in Nožice
near Kamnik, Slovenia, with a degree in
Electrical Engineering from Ljubljana
University, I had a strong desire to further
study abroad. That motivated me to
obtain a Masters degree in bio-medical
engineering at Northwestern University,
Illinois, in 1962. Afterwards I went to work
for Hewlett-Packard Company, Palo Alto,
located in Santa Clara Valley, California.
At that time, Santa Clara Valley was one
big fruit orchard studded with small towns
and only a few starter companies. The
favorable circumstances for industrial
expansion - thanks to a great degree to
cooperation between the industry and
the nearby Stanford University - allowed
these companies to grow as well as
attract many other companies to locate in
the valley. The Valley gradually began to
be called Silicon Valley due to the industrial
use of the silica in making integrated
circuits. Today, it is one huge residential
area and home of the giants like Hewlett-
Packard, Intel, Apple, Google and Yahoo
just to name a few.
What were your beginnings
at Hewlett-Packard like?
After graduation from Northwestern
University I applied for many jobs in the
U.S. with no success. I could not obtain
the so-called political clearance needed
for these jobs because I came from a
Communist country. Finally Hewlett-
Packard Company in Palo Alto, California
offered me a job that luckily did not require
a clearance. Fresh out of school rooms
with no experience, it was my enthusiasm
that got me the job, I was later told. I
started my 20 year career at HP in Sept.
1962. My first assignment was working
on frequency counters including the so
called computing counter which later led
to working on the first pocket calculator
HP-35 and soon thereafter on HP-80.
Please, name your patents.
I hold about 23 patents of which I would
specifically like to mention the following
two: the U.S. Pat. 3955074 - “General
purpose calculator having keys with more
than one function assigned thereto”,
meaning, complex financial solutions
with five keys and the U.S. Pat. 4918416
“Electronic proximity identification system”,
meaning, the key element of the system
is the proximity card with an integrated
circuit without batteries. The full list of my
patents is available on Google.
Would you honor us
with an interesting anecdote?
Hewlett Packard products have always
been known for their quality. As an early
example I’d like to point out the reliability
of HP-80. At the press conference
introducing this product in 1972, a
newsman asked Hewlett what happens
if this gadget falls down. Hewlett
answered: I don’t know, let’s see. He
tossed the calculator down the hall, the
person picked it up, started playing with
it, and the calculator worked as if nothing
had happened.
You witnessed the creation
of several important IT Companies,
also Apple among them. How do you
remember those events?
I was familiar with the general conditions
and the climate under which new IT
companies in Silicon Valley were born.
The exemplary HP was the original
think-tank and the spring board for
several new startups, including Apple.
Steve Wozniak was so thrilled with the
potential pocket calculators opened up,
that he left studies at Berkeley and came
to work for HP. In two years at HP, he
developed the “bread board” for Apple 1
on his own time. Working at HP on pet
projects was possible since the company
allowed free access to store rooms and
instrumentation. Wozniak presented his
brain child to the HP management, but the
company ended up not interested believing
it was not enough of a leap into the future.
Consequently Steve Wozniak and Steve
Jobs went to form the Apple Company.

GDP AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Gross domestic product is the most important aggregate for national accounts and the most comprehensive measure of overall
economic activity. Economic growth is measured by the growth rate of GDP. Economic growth and GDP in Slovenia grew steadily from
2003 to the year 2007, with the highest value, where economic growth reached a value of 6.9 percentage points. In 2008 the economic
growth was only 3.5 percentage points, almost half of what it was in previous years. Slovenia suffered from the global financial -
economic crisis and in 2009 performed a negative growth of - 7.8 percentage points, which is effected by the high export orientation of
Slovenia. Slow recovery with 1.2 is leading Slovenia out of the crisis. 2013 will be the year of full recovery in case the Slovene Government
will be able to complete all the needed reforms.

After 1991 Slovenia’s economy lost its biggest market, the ex Yugoslavian Republics. The consequence was a great rise in
the unemployment rate. Between 1998 and 2008 the unemployment rate fell by an average of 7.3 percentage points per year.
The unemployment rate rose again in 2009 because of the general economic crisis and reached a pick in 2010. The unemployment
rate was slowly reducing in 2011, but slowly growing in 2012.

Nuclear energy, by providing reliable and affordable electricity, helps keep business competitive and powers future worldwide job growth. Today, nuclear energy provides 15 percent of total global electricity generation and accounts for more than 45 percent of the carbon-free electricity in the world. Westinghouse, and its nearly 14,000 global employees, is dedicated to safe performance.
That’s why the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear plant is designed to be more than 200 times safer than U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements and be able to withstand the most extreme events. It is designed to shut down automatically, without the need for backup power, and will cool itself for 72 hours before any human intervention is necessary. This is made possible through the use of gravity, natural circulation, condensation and convection.
As the most advanced design available in the global marketplace, four AP1000 units are under construction in China. Four units are also under construction in the United States. Building additional AP1000 units will provide future generations with safe, clean and reliable electricity.
Check us out at www.westinghousenuclear.com
