Why the Community Engineering Corps?

Not the Normal Community Service Pitch!

Public trust drops

Bad press

Emergency efforts cost more money

Regulators and Councils lose trust in water system management

Ill-advised and hasty decisions by politicians and regulators

Every Water System Failure Hurts All Systems in the Region

Potential CECorps ProjectsWater Supply & Sanitation (drinking water, water resources, wastewater, compliance issues, leach fields, alternative toilets)

Waste Management (solid waste, recycling)

Agricultural (rainwater harvesting, irrigation, runoff control)

Civil Works (roads, bridges, rails to trails projects)

Energy (solar, alternative energy sources, energy audits)

Information Systems (GIS mapping, project management systems, construction management systems)

Mechanical (automating systems, HVAC, lighting)

Structural (roofing, buildings)

Others

Getting a Project off the Ground

Three important parts:

1. Sponsorship by Section

2. Project Applications and Approvals by CECorps

3. Volunteer Project Teams matched with Projects

Discovering Grover Hill

Project proposal developed by Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP)

Identified problem, parties involved, anticipated impacts of project

Submitted to CECorps, approved by Domestic Application Review Committee, and posted as “Open Project”

Creating the Project TeamNeed to develop a project team of volunteers* with assigned roles and qualifications Project Lead Responsible Engineer in Charge (REIC) Legal Review Committee (LRC) Technical Review Committee (TRC) Team Members (Student and Professional)

*Project team must be made up of ASCE, AWWA, and/or EWB-USA members
