The Program – Ohio 3rd Frontier Project
• $1.1 billion economic development initiative to strengthen Ohio’s economy
• State investment will leverage private and federal support for a total investment of $4.5 billion
• Represents Ohio’s largest-ever investment in expanding research capabilities and promoting start-up companies
The 3rd Frontier Project• Designed to encourage collaboration among and between industry, government
and universities
• Transition Ohio’s economy from aging manufacturing base to a more dynamic economy based on research and innovation
• Build on Ohio’s strengths (as identified by Battelle):
• Advanced Materials
• Biosciences
• Instruments, Controls and Electronics
• Information Technology
• Power and Propulsion
• The return on investment? A vibrant, diverse economy providing high-paying jobs and an enhanced quality of life for all Ohioans
Wright Capital Fund
• Wright Centers of Innovation– Represent investments in large-scale, multi-
institutional research and commercialization centers
• Wright Projects– Smaller capital projects involving research
and commercialization activities
State Funding
Wright Centers of Innovation- Power Partnership for Ohio - $18 million
Wright Project- Advanced Prototyping User Center - $2 million
Ohio Fuel Cell Initiative
• Announced by Governor Taft on 5/9/02
• $103 million, 3 year effort
• Core focus areas:
1) Expand the state’s research capabilities;
2) Participate in demonstration projects, including hydrogen infrastructure; and
3) Expand the fuel cell industry in Ohio
