Why Identifiers Matter

The why, what, and how of

ORCID, a universal PID for

researchers

NAMES ARE MESSY!

WHAT IS A PERSISTENT IDENTIFIER?

A persistent identifier is a long-lasting reference to

a document, file, web page, or other object… [It] is

usually used in the context of digital objects that

are accessible over the Internet. Typically, such an

identifier is not only persistent but actionable: you

can plug it into a web browser and be taken to the

identified source.

ORCID HELPS BUILDS TRUST IN SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS

INTEROPERABILITY TO BUILD TRUST

ORCID IN RESEARCH WORKFLOWS

• Publishing an article or dataset

• Completing a thesis or dissertation

• Submitting a conference abstract

• Applying for funding or using research facilities

• Sharing work in an institutional repository

• `Creating an institutional or other professional profile

• And more!

ORCID REGISTRY CONNECTIONS

Two models:

1. Connect via a vendor system

• Manuscript submission/publication

• Document/data repositories

• Profile systems

• CRIS systems

2. Develop a custom connection

VENDOR CONNECTIONS

Publishing• eJournal Press• Editorial Manager• Open Journal Systems• ScholarOne

Document / data repositories• DSpace• ePrints• Hydra/Fedora

CRIS Systems• Converis• Elements• IRMA• Pivot• PlumX• Pure• Vivo

CUSTOM INTEGRATIONS

Via the ORCID API

• Fine-tuned control and permissions

• Customized buttons, user flows, & user feedback

• Test and troubleshoot with ORCID Community Team

DESIGNING TOUCHPOINTS

Look for natural fits:• Your sign in – why not link your iD?

• Your account settings/user profile

• Submission (of any type)

• Form fills: pre-fill from your record!

• Registration: for conference or meeting

• Reporting: Link your iD to get started

link to customized URL

MAKING OUR DREAM A REALITY (1)

Imagine if researchers could sign into their manuscript submission

system using their ORCID credentials…

And their iD was then automatically included in their article’s

metadata…

And that information was used to automatically update their ORCID

record with the DOI for the published article…

Then imagine that information flowing back into your systems AND all

other ORCID-embedded systems the researcher uses…

SINGLE SIGN-IN WITH ORCID IN MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

• Enables researchers to authorize automatic updates to their ORCID record

• Currently used by Crossref and DataCite

• Crossref: during submission process

• 2016: 150,000 records, 300,000 works updated

• DataCite: independent of submission process

• 2016: 25,000 records, 50,000 works updated

http://ands.org.au/newsletters/share_issue18.pdf

ORCID AUTO-UPDATE

• Researchers sign up for an ORCID iD

• Authenticate their iD when

prompted

• During submission (Crossref)

• During sign-up (DataCite)

• Authorize Crossref/DataCite to

read/update record

• One time only authorization

• Select preferred visibility setting for

works

http://ands.org.au/newsletters/share_issue18.pdf

HOW AUTO-UPDATE WORKS

MAKING OUR DREAM A REALITY (2)

Imagine if researchers could sign into ORCID using their

institutional credentials…

And at the same time give their institution permission

to read and update their ORCID record…

And what if their institution could then immediately

connect their affiliation to their ORCID record…?

INSTITUTIONAL CONNECT• Benefits for users• One less password to remember

• Authoritative institutional affiliation on their ORCID record

• Their record will continue to be updated by their institution

• More time making contributions, less time managing them

• Benefits for institutions• Enables them to validate their researchers’ affiliation with the

institution

• Only need request permission once to read/update researcher records

• Benefits for community• More trusted and authoritative data available for everyone!

INSTITUTIONAL CONNECT OPTIONS1. ORCID initiated

• Researcher sets up institutional sign-in functionality

• ORCID prompts researcher to connect her/his ORCID iD to institution

• Institution collects iD and connects affiliation information to record

2. Institution initiated

• Institution uses ORCID Create-on-Demand process to collect ORCID iDs

• Institutions asserts researcher’s affiliation to her/his ORCID record through custom integration

3. CRIS system initiated

• Researcher connects ORCID iD to institution’s CRIS system

• CRIS system asserts researcher’s affiliation to her/his ORCID record

1. ORCID INITIATED WORKFLOW

2. CREATE ON DEMAND

• Affiliation pushed (and updated)

from the CRIS system

• Institution connect notification is

displayed to users signing in with

university credentials, with redirect

to CRIS system

• Pure

• Converis

• Symplectic Elements

3. VENDOR INITIATED

Who Benefits from ORCID?

Embedding validated ORCID iDs in all

the systems that researchers use

enables those iDs, and the (validated)

information connected with them, to

flow easily throughout the research

infrastructure

With hundreds of our members globally building ORCID

identifiers into their systems, as well as some funders and

publishers now requiring ORCID iDs, researchers are

increasingly likely to encounter ORCID in their day-to-day

life. We developed the Collect and Connect program to

streamline the integration process and foster a shared user

experience. This ensures researchers and our members

understand what ORCID is and why and how to engage.

ORCID’S COLLECT AND CONNECT PROGRAM

http://orcid.org/content/collect-connect

COLLECT & CONNECT GOALS• Clarify goals and expectations

across sectors

• Standardize and improve the user experience

• Build understanding and trust in connections between ORCID and other identifiers

• Increase efficiency and quality of integrations

• Achieve the ORCID vision through a community approach

NOTE: this image is much larger, so used crop tool to move it around and position in the frame here. May need to do some adjusting to this high res image in terms of contrast etc. if it looks too ”dark”

COLLECT & CONNECT

COLLECT!

• Collect and store

authenticated iDs

• Provide an ORCID-branded

button for collecting iDs

• Explain benefits of having an

iD for your researchers

• Explain benefits of including

ORCID iDs in your system

DISPLAY!

• Publicly display iDs and include in metada - including provenance

• Display the ORCID iD with the iDicon, following ORCID guidelines

• Use the member logo when describing your organization’s connection with ORCID

• Explain why you collect iDs

Nature collects

authenticated iDs and displays them in published articles

COLLECT (+ DISPLAY)

CONNECT!

• Request permissions to write to/update the user's ORCID record to assert affiliation, works, etc OR

• Ingest information from ORCID records to auto-populate forms

• Explain the benefits of your system connections with ORCID

ImpactStoryuses ORCID as a data source for providing insights into researcher impact.

CONNECT

CONNECT

Loop gets permission to update a user’s ORCID record, then adds a

person identifier, connecting their ORCID iD to their Loop profile

SYNCHRONIZE!

• Create bidirectional information

flow (synchronization) between

ORCID and your system AND/OR

• Automatically update ORCID

records AND/OR

• Create a search & link wizard

• In all cases, explain benefits to

individual

SYNCHRONIZE

Crossref Auto-update

Premium members can implement ‘web hooks’ to receive alerts each time an update is made to their researchers’ ORCID records so they can update their own systems
