ABSTRACT
Xanthone is a biologically active compound structured similarly to the health promoting bioflavonoids
commonly found in mangosteen extracts. Xanthones are rare in nature and can only be found in just two
families of plants namely Gentianaceae and Guttiferae making it unique among the polyphenolic compounds.
Xanthones can be categorized into 5 groups including: (1) simple oxygenated xanthones, (2) prenylated (3)
xanthhone glycosides (4) xanthonolignoids and (5) miscellaneous xanthones
