Building RESILIENCE in Children

Building Resilience in Children

•Resilience & Perseverance

• is the ability to bounce back when things do not go as planned/following through to completion in the face of challenges

• plays an important role in minimising the effects of difficult situations that people experience and helps them overcome adversity

• is about thriving in life, despite our circumstances

• is important for our children’s mental health.

Mindset IndicatorsAnxious Resilient Avoidant

Reluctant to attempt challenging tasks.

Has a go and persists. Gives up easily, shuts down.

Freezes in the face of challenges. Doesn't know

where to start. Feels incapacitated.

Gets stressed but resolves it through support (while there

may be times of freeze or flight, the eventual strategy is

tend, mend and befriend)

Flight. When confronted with a challenge, avoids,

procrastinates or distracts.

May blame self fordifficulties. Feels ashamed

and worries.Does not use blame/shame.

May blame others for difficulties. Feels ashamed

and avoids it.

Decision making - seeksinput from others, worriesabout what others might

do.

Decision making - can make independent decisions and can seek the input of others

when useful.

Overly self-reliant on making decisions alone. Reluctant to

seek help from others.

It is not what we SAY

but

what we DO that matters .

It begins with us, parents….It begins with you and me…

Our children do not just look like us…

they think, speak and behave like us.

Children will play with EVERYONE until a parent tells them not to.

Everyone is born with love and acceptance within them.

Never forget.

Kids are ‘colour-blind’.

It begins with you and me….

VALUES MATTEROur children model after us,

both the Good and the Bad .

▪ Be assured that we will never compromise on health, safety and learning.

▪ Give the school the authority to care and provide interventions when needed.

▪ Be patient, as education is often a slow

and long process.
