Living God’s Word
We pray that we might have the gift of forgiveness, both of receiving and giving it to
others in turn. We ask the Holy Spirit to empower us to be able to forgive what the
world judges to be “unforgiveable.” While for us it can seem impossible,
with God all things are possible.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
This is the first me in my 47 years of priesthood that I did not have a Catholic School to which to welcome students, parents, and teachers back. Another tragedy of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ability to fund Catholic schools going forward will become increasingly more challenging for parishes, dioceses, and families. It emphasizes even more the urgency of families ac vely par cipa ng in our parish religious educa on program, so that all members may con nue to grow in the faith.
As we await further guidance from the governor and the cardinal, we are star ng to make plans to try to accommodate our many parish groups who would like to resume some regular gatherings in our parish. The social distancing s ll required will challenge the capacity of many of our usual mee ng spaces, as will the need to sani ze a er each use. Please be pa ent a few more weeks as we work out the details.
With the slightly increased numbers allowed for Masses and other devo ons in church, we expect to revise the weekend Mass schedule and that of some devo ons star ng the first weekend of October. We will announce these soon.
I am pleased to announce that the Grand Total of your gi s to the “ALL FOR ST. JOHN’S” project is: $11,910.00!!! Thank you to all who made this extra sacrifice to cover the an cipated revenue from our cancelled carnival and Giant 50-50 raffle. May God bless each of you!
Msgr. Richard Arnhols
Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings
Erich Segal died at the beginning of 2010. I remember reading his best seller Love Story and being moved by its then famous line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Over the years I have really come to disagree with this. I believe love means having to say you’re sorry and asking for forgiveness many times in life. Today’s Gospel reminds us that love also means being willing to forgive many times in life. We fail each other. We sin against each other. Sometimes we do this deliberately, sometimes thoughtlessly, but nonetheless it is painful for the one sinned against. Is forgiveness ever easy—especially with a repeat offender? “Seven times?” Peter asks. “Seventy-seven times,” Jesus replies. Today’s readings give us the major reason to forgive others: God has forgiven us. There’s more. Not to forgive is to let anger and wrath poison our hearts. Being unforgiving can imprison a person, resulting in bitterness, revenge, and a slow death of the spirit. Not to forgive can be more costly for the one offended. Paul tells us we belong to the Lord, are called to serve him, to do his will, which is the will of the Father. And God’s will is that we forgive one another. When the risen Lord first appeared to the disciples in the upper room, he wished them peace, and then gave them the power of the Spirit to forgive. This work is not limited to our going to the sacrament of reconciliation.
—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” – R 14:8
This is the essence of stewardship – everything we have and everything we are is a gi from God. We aren’t “owners” of anything,
we are merely “stewards” of the gi s that God has given us, especially our very own lives. Pray to God, daily, and ask Him how He
is calling you to the live the life that He intended for you.

—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
Administradores: ¡Compartiendo Nuestro Tiempo, Talento, Y Tesoro!

MERCY Dost thou wish to receive mercy? Show mercy to thy neighbor. —St. John Chrysostom
FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.

MISERICORDIA ¿Deseas recibir misericordia? Demuestra misericordia a tu prójimo.
