1. What’s the differences between the three parts of an atom?

Although atoms are the smallest pieces of elements, even they are made up of parts.

Atoms

The center of the atom is called the nucleus.

The nucleus has a positive electrical charge.

The nucleus is surrounded by the electron cloud.

The electron cloud has a negative electrical charge.

Atoms have three basic parts.

Parts of the Atom

Protons

Neutrons

Electrons

The nucleus of an atom is made up of two parts. The protons and the neutrons.

The Nucleus

The proton is found in the nucleus and has a positive charge. It’s symbol is p+.

The Proton

The proton has a mass of one AMU.

The neutron is found in the nucleus and has no charge. It’s symbol is n.

The Neutron

The neutron has a mass of one AMU.

The electrons circle the nucleus in an area called the electron cloud. It’s symbol is e-.

The Electron

The electron has a

mass of .0006 AMU.

Even though the electrons are spinning around the nucleus at about the speed of light, they continue to orbit the nucleus.

Why Don’t the Electrons Spin Away

Positive and negative electric charges attract one another like magnets.

Protons have one positive charge and electrons have one negative charge. Atoms always have the same number of protons and electrons.

The charge on Atoms

Just like positive and negative numbers cancel each other, so do electric charges.

Atoms are neutral, they have no charge.

Each element is given its own number. This is called the atomic number. It is the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom.

Atomic Number and Atomic Mass

Atoms like all matter have mass. The mass of an atom is called the atomic mass or weight.
