Dr.DhanfuE.Elston(pronounced:dah-nee-foo)servesasCompleteCollegeAmerica’sVicePresidentofStrategyforGuidedPathwaysandPurposeFirstwhereheutilizeshiscampusexpertiseforpracticalapplication,implementation,andscalingofCCAstrategiesatinstitutionsthroughoutthenation.Inovertwodecadesofhishighereducationcareerinacademicandstudentaffairs,Elstonhascreatedandimplementedcomprehensivesuccessandretentionprogramsthathavegarnerednationalattention.Hehasbeenrecognizedasanexpertincollegecompletionpolicyinitiativesatinstitutionsthateducatehighlydiverseandunderrepresentedstudentpopulations.PriortohiscurrentrolewithCCA,Dr.ElstonheldthepositionofExecutiveDirectorofStudentSuccessandTransitionatPurdueUniversityCalumet.UnderElston’sleadership,PurdueCalumet(nowPurdueNorthwest)experiencedexponentialgainsinfirst-yearretention,graduationrates,andenrolledcredithours.

Followinghiskeynoteaddress,Dr.DhanfuElstonwillleadaworkshopusingVSCS-basedstudentscenariostoexplorepotentialapplicationsofnationallyrecognizedstrategiestoachievesignificantimprovementsinstudentoutcomes.

Textbookpriceshaveskyrocketedinthepastfewdecades,withramificationsforstudentaccessandsuccess.Inonerecentsurvey,66.6%ofFloridastudentspolledsaidtheyhadgonewithoutbuyingarequiredtextbookduetothehighpricetag;another47.6%saidtheyhadsimplytakenfewercourses.AglobalmovementtowardOpenEducationalResources(OER)hasariseninresponsetothiseconomicburdenandinsupportofanopen,creativeandcollaborativeapproachtoeducationalmaterials.HowcantheVermontStateCollegeshelpfacultymaketheswitchtolow-orno-costcoursematerialstohelpbooststudentsuccessandretention?TheVSCLibraryCouncilproposesanOERProgramthatwouldbringtogetherstakeholdersacrossthecollegestocontributetotheplanning,oversight,andcollaborationneededtomakeOERattheVSCarobustandsustainablepartofhighereducationaffordabilityinVermont.Comehearlibrariansandfacultydiscusstheirapproach,seehowprogramshavebeenimplementedaroundthecountry,andshareyourownexperiencesandpotentialOERsupportneedsasfaculty.
