Issue 6/2014 20 FebruarY 2014

From the Principals deskWe are so very proud of our athletes who achieved so wonderfully on Friday at the Athletics Meeting in Port Elizabeth despite the inclement weather. Our School’s sport and cultural accomplishments are of an exceptionally high standard thanks to the combined effort of parents, staff and learners. All achievements can be read in this copy of the Pecten. An issue which cannot be given enough attention is that of Reading. Reading proficiency is the royal road to knowledge, and essential to the success of all academic subjects. With parents being rather busy in the evenings after a full day of work, sitting quietly and listening to the children’s reading is furthest from mind. The television has become the ‘baby-sitter’, and very little attention is given to correcting language and speech. We have found a deterioration in the quality of the spoken word, ‘slang’ has replaced correct English, and children are unable to find the correct terminology and words to express themselves in the spoken form. This we believe is due to a lack of reading. For your child to achieve proficiency in reading there has to be a partnership between the teacher, parent and child. Remember to set a regular time to listen to your child read. Keep out all distractions, make it a pleasant time and keep reading sessions short – 5 to 10 minutes. Quality time spent is more important that quantity. Encourage your children to read, as it is probably the most important skill we can impart to our children to equip them for life. Parents please remember to use the appropriate gates when dropping off and collecting their children, to avoid congestion and accidents. A reminder that the teacher’s gate is out of bounds for children to enter and exit through, and this also applies to parents dropping off and collecting. Please support us in this regard, as rules are put in place for the safety and protection of your children.Have a blessed week.
