What is Pneumatic System?

• A system that uses compressed air as a working

medium for transmission is known as pneumatic

system.

What is Pneumatic Tube System?

• A Pneumatic Tube System (PTS) is a system in

which carriers are sent through a network of tubes by

compressed air or by vacuum.

Why PTS?

• Pneumatic tube system has a speed of 6 - 8 m/s

• Saves time

• Allows your staff to concentrate on more important

work

Types of PTS

1. Point To Point System

2. Semi Automatic System

3. Fully Automatic System

1. Point to Point System

Simple A-B

connection

Bi-directional

2. Semi Automatic System

• Main station

receives and

delivers to multiple

stations

• Remote stations

are configured to

only send directly

to the main station

3. Fully Automatic System

• Allows any station

to send and

receive from any

station

Components

1. Blower

2. Carrier

3. Diverter

4. Tubes

5. Arrival Signal

6. Control Station

Components1. Blower

• The driving force of pneumatic tubesystem is a blower.

• Due to the air flow the carrier willstart to move in the transport tube.

2. Carrier

• Carriers are the containers that hold materials and goods as they move through a tube system.

• Size of the carrier is 15cm diameterand 20-30 cm long.

Components3. 3-way diverter

• Diverters act as a switching station

that allows a carrier to travel to its

destination in the most direct path set

up by the diverters.

4. Tube

• The carriers move through especially

fabricated gray plastic pipe.

Components5. Arrival Signal

• Diverters act as a switching station

that allows a carrier to travel to its

destination in the most direct path set

up by the diverters.

6. Control Station

• The area where the carriers are

exchanged.

Structure of PTS

Working

• We take the transport process from Station 3 to Station 2 as example.

• Firstly, the carrier enters into the tube system through the station 5.

• Then Diverter 1 is set at the left branch and Blower unit 1 generates suction by partial vacuum. Soon the carrier arrives in point A.

• Diverter 1 turns to the middle branch and Blower unit 1 produces compressed air to pull the carrier to point B.

• The carrier gets into Top slot 1 of transfer center by gravity and then falls into the car, which can move between the bottom slots back and forth.

• With the help of the car, the carrier arrives at point D.

• Blower unit 2 produces compressed air to push the carrier to station 2.

Advantages

• Decreased material delivery time.

• Carriers are transported at speed of 6-8 m/s.

• Can transport up to 3-7kg material.

• Less prone to human error.

• Lesser staff requirement.

• Reduced maintenance cost.

Disadvantages

• Heat is generated due to friction

• Bends in system cause deceleration

• Noise is generated

Applications

• In hospitals, for transporting test tubes or tissue jars,

medicines and blood products

• In banks for the purchase and removal of cash and

valuable

• In industries for sending raw materials

• In post offices for sending letters

Conclusion

• The pneumatic tube system is logistics

transportation system

• This system uses pneumatics as power, which is

controlled by computer

• This system could implement the task to carry goods

between systems or within system
