CM Girl Scouts Hold AnnualMother and Daughter Dinner

CENTER MORICHES—The Center Moriches Girl Scouts' annualmother-daughter dinner was held May 24 at the Sunrise Restauranthere. Approximatel y 135 girls and their mothers attended.

Mrs. Charles Waide , chairman of Nei ghborhood 5 was guest ofhonor. Mrs. Thomas Sinnickson, Jr., acted as master-of-ceremonies,and Mrs. Dayton Han ,oi \ i \va..chairman of the affair.

Troop 6 led the pledge of Alle-giance and sing ing of "America."Troop 13 said grace and after thedinner entertained the gatheringwith songs.

The following members of Troop13 received awards for fecondClass rank; Bonnie Bittner , Ju-anita Duffy, Rhona Kvaves , Pet aWalsh , Kathleen Mullano , LindaSherrill , Linda Murray, RosemariePujado , Cecilia Gil igan and JaneSeides. Their leader , Mrs. Wil-lam Mullane , presented the badgvs

Troop 90 entertained bv sing-ing "Make New Friends" and thi''Chalet Song." Their leader , Mrs.Rudar Olsen , and her assi tantMrs. John Matteson awarded pro-ficiency badges to girls who hadearned them. Troop 23 presented a puppetshow prepared by six girls whohave completed their First Classrank. The troop sang "The GoldenSun" and "Kum Bah Yah." Mrs.Paul Meyer , leader , presented theawards. These included proficiencybadges earned in the last sixmonths to all members ; Five Yearpins to Lorraine Theisen and Ar-lene Agnetti; Second Class badgesto Linda Green and Kathleen Vo-gel; Firs t Class badges to ArleneAgnetti , Monica Gilligan , LindaMalanchuk , Barbara Meyer , Vir-ginia Sands and Lorraine Theisen.The daughters of the mothersregistered with the troop present-ed "Friendship Pins" as thanks toMrs. Leo Redmond , assistant lead-er , and to committe- 1 women , Mrs.Mac Janis, Mrs. Michael Malan-chuk and Mrs. Mark Flaherty .

The highlight of the eveningwas the presentation of the CurvedBar award to Rita Trautschold ,Gail Hanford and Betsy Reiss ,members of Troop 6. The CurvedBar rank is the highest attainableby Intermediate Girl Scouts. ThisCurved Bar pin may be worn onthe senior uniforms. Mrs . Waide ,Neighborhood cha i rman , made th epresentation. Afterwa rd, the girlsparticipated in an impressive cere-mony at which they were gradual,ed into Senior Scouting, leavingtheir Intermediate leader , Mrs.Mac Janis , and being accepted intoSenior Troop 12 by Mrs. WilliamWalsh.

CENTER MORICHES—Desp ite a heavy downpour , an audienceof nearly 200 attended the Spring concert presented by the ChoralSociety of the Moriches at Center Moriches High School gymnasiumFriday night.

Thirty-one ladies sang under the direction of Josef A. Lemmen.with Mrs. Ruth Becker at the^piano. The ladies wore pastels andwhite carnation corsages. Men inthe chorus also wore carnations .

Mrs. Doroth y Owen , contraltosoloist ori ginal l y scheduled tosing "Over the Rainbow '' fromthe "Wizard of Oz " had to sing anunaccompanied l u l l a b y insteadafter discovering, at the last mo-ment , that the music for herscheduled number had been mis-laid.

MORICHES — Filthy conditionsat the town dump on Yaphank-Moriches Road were brought to theattention of The Long Island Ad-vance last week by a Manorvilleresident.

Acting on the resident's advice ,The Advance paid a visit to thearea for a firs t hand look Thurs-day.

Mottles , paper , furni ture andother debris had apparentl y beendiscarded along the road outsidethe dump.

Shredded paper and rags whichhad blown from the all but un-enclosed dump festooned bushesover a large area. The onl y ap-parent separation between thedump and road was a cyclone gateabout 20 feet in length.

John W. Ready, Jr., BrookhavenTown sanitation commissioner , ina statement last Tuesday told TheAdvance that it had become neces-sary to l imi t the hours duringwhich the dump 's gate was open.

The area , he exp lained , was be-coming a catch-all for garbagehauled f rom all over Suffolk andas far away as Nassau County.

Commissioner Ready said hehoped that residents would learnto use the dump during the al-loted hours , now 7 a. m. to 7p. m. Anyone caught depositinggarbage outside the gate will besubject to a summons , he stated.

CENTER MORICHES — Cen-ter Moriche s Chamber of Com-merce members gathered for lunchMay 24 at the Lindenmere Ho-tel and discussed several com-muni ty problems to be furtheraired at a general meeting schedul-ed for early this fall.

Meanwhile , those present decid-ed to look into the mechanics ofsetting up a community garbagedistrict. Secretary John Ro,so willdraft a letter to BrookhavenTown Supervisor August Stout ,Jr , reques.ing information on es-tablishing such a district.

Another item slated for possibleaction is the groups desire forreopening the old Center M'orichesPo ice substation , now serving asa phone booth. Members expressedconcern at the number of storebreak-ins which have occurred inthe community recently. A letter-is being forwarded to Police Com-missioner Charles Thorn.

Also examined were the possi-bili t ies of a communit y water dis-trict and possible curtailment ofissuing further permits for theopening of new gas stations inCenter Moriches. Such stationswould lower property values, mem-bers believe.

President Joe Gratz announcedthat the chamber will meet on theUnion Street Dock at noon , June21 for the annual inspection oftown beaches.
