The Safety Ecosystem of PET Packaging
More than 300 million MT already used globally
More than 15 trillion bottles packed and consumed

Space SavingsOccupational
safety
• 35 % more space required for storing Glass
• Higher Transport Cost
• Higher Pollution (through Diesel)
• Higher warehousing cost
• Lower ply cartons incase of PET ( 5 vs 3)
• Shrink Wrapping of PET Bottles
• For 1 MT paper 25 KL of water required
• For 1 MT paper, 17 trees are cut
(source: Dartmouth College)
• Glass is produced at 1600OC
• PET production requires 275OC
• 90 dB ( Glass) vs 50 dB ( PET) while filling (low noise level)
• Injuries to workers due to Glass breaking
Weight:Glass – 150 gmPET – 12 gm
1200% higher weight in Glass
Breakage:5% in GlassNil in PET

UNEP Recommendation:a. Be aware of the WATER FOOTPRINT of food & products You Consume
b. Buy locally produced products that take environmental conditions into account

2.4% of Total Surface Area
Population to rise 141cr(2022) from 131cr(2015)
17% of human population
Alarming Water Situation of India
Size of Market ( Country Liquor & IMFL) : 50 lac cases per month
Water required for washing per case for Glass Bottles : 20 litres
Water required per annum for washing : 20 L x 50 lac x 12 months = 120 cr litres
Water requirement per Kg of Sugarcane Plant Crop = 88 L(source: ISMA)
120 cr L water meets needs of 136 MMT of sugarcane cultivation
In case of PET , water requirement can be cut
down drastically
All India Sugarcane Production (2014-15) : 356 mn TonnePET bottles can be air-washed / PET
can also be supplied from plants with Clean Room eliminating water
needs totally for washing

PET helps in efficient use of Water usage
Case Study : Maharashtra
“Over 90% of our packaging (by weight) is made from glass,” the report reads. “However, we are increasing the use ofalternative materials and formats as part of our innovation agenda. PET bottles, plastic closures, Tetra Pak cartons, multilayer pouches, sachets and other small formats all use plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) andpolypropylene (PP).
“Using PET instead of glass can provide sustainability benefits, for example by reducing the weight of packaging andassociated carbon emissions from transport.”

PET Bottle Collection at Raas Garba
What Do Institutions say about PCR PET Collection in India ?
RIL recycles 50 KT per annum of PCR PET Bottles to Value Added Products
What Do Institutions say about PCR PET Collection in India ?
PCR PET – a valuable raw material for various non food contact applications
Environment Benefits – PET
1. The Life Cycle Energy and GHG emissions are the least in PET compared to alternates.
2. PET bottle weights have come down by 58% from 1989-2009 compared to Glass by
11 % from 2000-2012 with potential of breakage.
3. Glass packaging requires 12 times more packaging by weight compared to PET
4. In India, about 40% of perishables are lost during transit. PET/Plastics help to reduce
these transit losses.

Due to reverse logistics of glass bottles, the actual transportation GHG footprints would be higher in India
PET – A Law and Order Friendly Packaging
Broken Glass bottle is a assault
weapon
In UK, 87,000 attacks per year ( wiki) with Glass
Glass Bottle used as Petrol Bombs
Glassing Incidents Globally
Glass bottles widely used
during rioting
Glass bottles banned at several Sports / Concerts/
programs
