Neglected tropical diseases are primarilyinfectious diseases that thrive in impoverishedsettings, especially in the heat and humidityof tropical climates.

Transmission cycles are perpetuated under conditions of environmental contamination. Environmental contamination, in turn, is perpetuated by poor standards of living and hygiene.
Once widely dispersed, these diseases are nowconcentrated in settings of extreme poverty, in urban slums or conflict zones and thrive in conditions of impoverishment.
