Message from Administration
Fundraiser Winners We want to thank you all for making the fundraiser a success. We raised approximately $14,000 for our after-school
programs. We will have detail next school year on procedures for awarding the monies to differing after-school programs.
The Top Sellers and Top Homerooms were as follows: The top selling classrooms will be provided details in a future
email. Again, thank you for your support!
The 2016-17 year is almost over and we are getting ready to send our 6th Graders on to Waipahu Intermediate
School. They and all of our students have a few exciting events to look forward to in the next week or so. Thank
you to all the parents who are helping to make end of year activities special with the purchase of Family Fun Day
Tickets, making food, and coming to on campus events to show support for the children.
Check your calendars for times for Family Fun Day - this Friday. Remember school ends at 1:00 pm on this day.
Wednesday May 17, school ends at 2:00pm. Sign out for Friday will be with the child’s teacher. Only emergencies
will sign out at front office.
Smarter Balanced Testing period is complete. Thank you for getting your children to school rested, fed, and
ready to think. We are anticipating further growth in scores as a result of teacher and school efforts for everyone.
Even though the little ones are not tested, their teachers take their preparation roles seriously and increasing
learning for everyone is a school effort.
Finally, a special thank you to the volunteers at Campus Beautification Day on April 29, the front of the school
received some extra attention and new paint in a few spots.
As we head into the warm, relaxing months of summer, please look for opportunities when you can engage
children in conversations and good books. Let children read books, directions, signs, the newspaper, and anything
else to help them practice their reading skills. Try a couple of mental math problems and make predictions as
added learning bonuses.
Have a safe and relaxing summer! See you on August 1.
Sincerely,
Maribeth Thompson, Vice-Principal Noted:

The VEX-IQ Team did a fantastic job this school year!
The team won seven trophies, including “Team Excellence”
and “Teamwork Championship”. In the two preliminary tourna-
ments, Team 19032B qualified to the State Tournament each
time. Although they did not make it to the World competition
in Kentucky, the team made it to the final round with a 3rd
place finish in the Team Competition at the State Tournament.
The team members worked hard for their accomplishments and
have been rewarded for their efforts.
The team has been invited to go to Okinawa, Japan as
Goodwill Ambassadors to teach other students about VEX-IQ robotics. If all the details can be worked out, the
team will be going in the beginning of June of this year.
In the 10 years of robotic competition that August Ahrens Elementary School has entered, this was the best that
a Robotics team has ever done. Thanks to all the support that the team received throughout the years from our
wonderful school community.
Hawaii State Elementary Science Olympiad Hawaii State Elementary Science Olympiad was held at Mililani High School with 15 elementary schools
participating. August Ahrens Elementary won the “Spirit Award” for “demonstrating good sportsmanship and
personifying the spirit of Science Olympiad competition.” This is the second spirit Award that the team from
August Ahrens has won in 3 years. Congratulations to all the members. They performed well throughout the day.
Science Bowl Competition
This year was the 7th annual 6th grade Science Bowl. Each 6th grade homeroom fielded a team. The
homeroom challenged each other in a quiz like game to show how much science knowledge they can show.
The semi-finals were held at an assembly with A-3 v. A7 and A1 v. A8. Mr. Umetsu’s A3 and Mrs. Anzai’s A1 were
victorious and challenged each other at the STEAM night. After a exciting battle in the finals, A3 won the
championship. Congratulations to all the participants in this year’s Science Bowl.
Senator Clarence Nishihara was an honored guest. Senator Nishihara and Representative Henry Aquino has
supported the event for the past seven years by donating the trophies.
Special thanks to Ariel Maeda, Marlo Oya and Vera Ulep for assisting with the scoring and timing of the Sci-
ence Bowl event and thank you to our 40 staff & student volunteers as well as the AAES families (approximately
100+) in attendance who made our 2017 Science Bowl and STEAM night fulfilling.
