PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 3 Week 2 Thursday 1 August 2019
What a great start to Term 3! Staff Development Day last Mon-
day afforded us an opportunity to look at and discuss elements
of our own wellbeing. We spend a lot of time thinking about
and dealing with student welfare in the school but rarely talk
about how we manage our own stress. These conversations can
only happen in trusting environments where there is reciprocal
respect and genuine concern for one another. We shared
freely, laughed together and enjoyed a delicious lunch – some-
thing we rarely have time for during the term. I’m happy to re-
port that your children are in good hands. What a cohesive,
hard-working, compassionate team we have built together. Our
souls and our hearts were renewed and we have embraced the
challenges that the remainder of the year will no doubt bring.
Apart from the mindfulness we engaged in, we also tackled
some of the more formal aspects of teaching and learning. Visi-
ble Learning is a whole school focus for the next 3 – 5 years. We
are currently looking at the language we share to imbed the
concept of learning intentions (what are you learning?) and
success criteria. (how will you know when you get there?) Cur-
rently, we are talking to our students about what makes a
GOOD learner. The responses are many and varied and general-
ly include things like: “working quietly” “listening to the teach-
er” “getting my work correct” While some of these are some-
times important, we are more concerned with learners who are
willing to step outside their comfort zone and demonstrate cu-
riosity, creativity, cooperation, problem solving and deep en-
gagement in their learning. I hope to have a parent information
session about Visible Learning and its implications for our fu-
ture school plan in the near future. Watch this space!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED
Our NAIDOC celebrations are well underway with a formal assembly on
Monday providing the perfect start to a week of activities. The diversity
and depth of talent of Old Bar School students never ceases to amaze me!
A short film, featuring stage 3 children talking about the NAIDOC theme,
VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH was moving and poignant. Thanks to local film
maker (and parent) Grant Saunders for giving so generously of his time
and expertise to work with students and share his story and vision. A won-
derful Aboriginal Education Committee organised activities including face
painting, rock decoration, story-telling, and art classes with renowned lo-
cal educationalists and artists Kim Husband, Rex Winston and Lara Went.
Their passion for their culture and history has touched us all. Thanks for a
great week.
Our girls’ soccer team continues to dominate with a 1-0 victory over
Tanilba Bay last Monday. They are now in the 6th round of the PSSA
knockout and on track to progress to the state titles! Super coach James
Somerville is in the process of organising the next match against Singleton
which will be a home game for us. Yeah! We can all be there to cheer them
on. Go girls!
Look up! Our new building is really taking shape with the scaffolding starting to come down. The cab-
inetry is being installed, the painters are in and the landscaping has begun. It is beautiful. The fil-
tered light streaming through the windows creates calm, flexible learning spaces. I can’t wait to
share it with you all. We are hopeful to have handover in September.
Next week is Education Week. I hope you are able to visit us on Thursday for the formal assembly,
classroom visits and picnic lunch. Children are always so excited to share their classroom and their
work with you.
‘Be the reason someone smiles today!’
Have a great week, Deborah Scanes.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
On Monday 29 July, our girls soccer team claimed a
1-0 victory over Tanilba Bay Public School in Round
5 of the PSSA Soccer Knockout competition.
It was an intense and close game with excellent
sportsmanship displayed and a wonderful display
of parent support for both teams.
Well done girls, and thank you so much to the par-
ents who provided us with photos of the game
which can be viewed on our Facebook page.
On the 13 and 14th July one of our Year 6 students, Thoren
Openshaw competed in the NSW Junior State Dirt Track Ti-
tles. Thoren finished with a 2nd place on his 85cc and a
3rd place on his 65cc. He competed against multiple Australi-
an title holders in both of these classes, making it a great
achievement to receive placings at his very first NSW State
title meet.
This caps off a great 6 months for Thoren after receiving
1st and 3rd places at the Akubra Classic late 2018, and also a
1st and 3rd place at the Taree Twilight meet in January.
Thoren’s achievements on his bike earned him the Manning
Times Sportsperson of the month in March
Well done Thoren - what an impressive achievement!
Two of our students, Kenan and Sasha, recently competed in the North-
ern NSW and QLD region of the Interschool Snowsports Champion-
ships.
Despite difficult blizzard conditions, both Kenan and Sasha were able to
compete in some of their events, Kenan finishing 97th out of 148 stu-
dents in the Ski Cross. Sasha completed her first run in the Alpine GS
race, rounding each gate and avoiding disqualification, taking her
through to the second round.
Unfortunately due to illness, Sasha was unable to complete the second
run. We will have our fingers crossed for you next time, Sasha!
We are so impressed by their sportsmanship and the willingness of our
"coastal" kids to participate against schools who are able to spend
many weeks on the snow refining their skills and techniques.
Well done Sasha and Kenan - what a fantastic experience for you both!

This week OBPS students and staff have
participated in an amazing line-up of activ-
ities and events in celebration of NAIDOC
week. We are so grateful to the parents,
community members, staff and our Abo-
riginal student leaders who have driven,
supported and led these educational and
culturally enriching experiences for our
school community. Thank you!
YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXCURSION

In Week 8, our Year 6 students will be travelling to Canberra to explore our nation’s capital.
Among other experiences, students will visit Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the Australian
War Memorial, the High Court of Australia and the National Museum of Australia.
They will enjoy a range of guided tours and opportunities to absorb the significance of a variety of
cultural and historical sites.
OBPS students are fortunate to be recipients of a subsidy under the Parliament and Civics Education
Rebate (PACER) program. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Austral-
ians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. As a
school community, we are grateful for this financial support, enabling our students to participate in
this enriching educational experience at a lowered cost.
CANBERRA MEDICAL FORMS
PACKED MEALS FOR CANBERRA EXCURSION
Last week, notes were sent home about the excursion which need to be completed and returned.
This is now a matter of urgency, as we need to submit this information to our camp providers, and
confirm final numbers.
If we do not receive these forms by THIS FRIDAY, we cannot hold your child's place on the excursion.
If you have not received or misplaced your note, a printable copy can be found at the link below:
https://oldbar-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/notes-and-forms-.html
When planning how to pack for the Canberra excursion, please note that the only day parents need
to pack food is Monday (recess, lunch and fruit) for the bus trip. There was an error on the note that
implied that parents should pack food for students on Tuesday also - please disregard this.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
OLD BAR FIRIES CLIMB FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE
On Saturday 9 November 2019, 600 firefighters will be climbing
the iconic Sydney Tower Eye in full structural fire fighting en-
semble to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Dis-
ease (MND).
MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease. MND
affects the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that
enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow, causing them the degenerate and die. A person’s
senses and intellect are not affected.
A donation to TEAM OLD BAR can be made at:

Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers who have taken over the uniform shop this term!
Without our volunteers, we could not continue to provide low cost uniforms with very minimal
markups - thank you. Parents and carers, please note the changes to uniform shop opening hours
below.
