When the boys leave school after the HSC our aim is that they leave with much more than just a high ATAR. We really hope that after 6 years at our school, they leave with a whole set of skills that will support them to become the most successful man that they can be. Part of this success involves having a positive impact on others and the world around them. It was wonderful to see this very idea demonstrated by Year 11 Music students Blake Williams, Luca Coren, Owen Famler, Wesley Stewart, Alex Kim, Elijah Pelaez and Joshua Martin last weekend. The boys organised a benefit concert for the victims of the recent bushfires at Petersham Bowling Club. They organised the event themselves, promoted it, and performed in their various bands with some friends. They raised $750 for charity. It is inspiring to see such initiative and I’m incredibly proud of them.

Year 7 students have continued their journey into the world of experimentation. Students have familiarised themselves with new equipment they will be using to conduct experiments throughout the year. They also have been exploring the scientific method, particularly variables and fair testing.
Marine and Aquaculture Technology students have been learning about water safety. They have been exploring the dangers and risks associated with a variety of aquatic environments and how to avoid injury. The boys have also been studying effective ways to respond to injury, focussing this week on first aid. They learnt about the DRSABCD procedure and practised their CPR skills.

A huge warm welcome to the 2020 Year 8 after school Drama ensemble. These students have been carefully selected across the Year 8 cohort for their innovation, originality and talent in Drama. The afterschool program will commence next week and the students will begin devising a series of performances to present at the annual Creative Arts night! The boys, as well as Mr Ahearne and Ms Small are excited to begin devising with the group.

BEAT THE ZONE DOWN THE COURT
Congratulations to the U15s basketball team for making it through to the grand finals. The team’s quick transition from defense to offense meant their opponent did not have time to get back and set up their defense. The team realised that the easiest way to defeat the opponent was to beat them down the court and score before they could establish an organised defense of all five players into the zone. Good luck for the finals against Epping Boys High School. Mr Tenefrancia

FUTSAL – SEMI-FINAL FEVER
Congratulations to our both junior Futsal teams who secured the grand final spots by beating Normanhurst 4-0 and drawing with Homebush (1-1). The final results are not the real indicators of dominance our players displayed in both games. More impressive was our 15s B team who stretched the winning streak to 13 games and will enter the grand final match as heavy favourites, while our 15s B will need to improve the attacking stats. Throughout the game, seven gold opportunities were not converted into goals, allowing opposition to score with a minute to go, making it nerve wrenching end. We prevailed and deservedly qualified into the grand final as the best rank team during regular season. On the other side, our second grade team although playing very well, did not qualify for the grand final. Asquith’s team better utilised their scoring opportunities, being victorious 5-3.

Comradery, resilience and pure sportsmanship best summarises the Ashfield Boys’ efforts in this year’s campaign with Grade Volleyball. The journey to finals consisted of early morning training sessions, school holiday training camps, and teamwork among a group of friends who strongly supported each other. The boy’s determination and true sportsmanship is what brought them to their finals campaign. Unfortunately, despite a strong performance against Epping, the boys fell short of two sets, bringing
their finals series to an end. The loss is not a reflection of the talent, flare and determination these boys truly have to play clinical Volleyball. The boys have an upcoming knockout competition as well as school’s cup, which will provide an opportunity to display more of their innovation and flare on the court.
