MORNINGTON SPECIAL DEVELOPMENTAL SCHOOL Newsleer No 5 August 2019 PRINCIPALS REPORT Independence Through Learning From the Principals Desk Dear Parents/Carers, Term 2 Holidays The term 2 holidays were busy for contractors at the school, if not for staff. Over the holidays we had plumbers in undertaking a number of tasks through-out the school. They were trying to find and fix the sewerage smell near Room 2. It looks like (smells like?) They succeeded! We also had Steve and a friend re-building sandpits in the jun- ior and senior yards and removing Agapanthus (Agapanthus are an OHS issue as they are poisonous if consumed). Lions Club – Mornington. Steff, as school representave, aended the Mornington Lions club AGM held at Hasngs on Tuesday the 9 th of July. Mornington Lions very generously donated $500.00 to the school. Thank you to the Mornington Lions, they are great supporters of our school, and thank you Steff who aend on my behalf. Term 3 Term 3 is a big term for us. This is the term where a lot of work for the upcoming Term 4 Review needs to be car- ried out. To this end, I have asked Angela (Teacher in Room 7) to work on policy compliance. This means she is ensuring all of our policies and procedures are up to date and that we conform to the Child Safe Standards. I have asked Stuart – the teacher in room 3, to develop a data base of all of our students (the students names will be removed to ensure privacy) that I can use to explain to the reviewers the nature and character of our school. The data will be aggregate data that describes the school s profile, how many male students versus female students for example. 2019 Mornington Secondary School Drum Corps Band The students had a big surprise on Wednesday the 7 th of August with a visit from the 2019 Mornington Secondary School Drum Corps Band. The band were terrific and our students loved listening and happily joined in with the drumming. The young students from the secondary college were very skilled and really entertaining. Much thanks to Mornington Secondary teacher: Paul Papeeas who organised the visit. Our Commitment to Child Safety Mornington SDS is commied to providing a Child Safe environment where children and young people in our care are safe and feel safe and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives. We promote and protect the best interests of students involved in our programs at all mes. Cold, flu & other sicknesses. The department issued, in part, the following advice for parents and schools. If your school or service has a sick child, you must: ensure that unwell children do not aend your school. isolate children who became unwell during the day from other children and send the unwell child home as soon as possible. Based on this advice it is very important that parents keep their children home if they are sick. Colds and flu are easily transmied in schools so I ask that parents keep their child at home unl they are beer and not likely to pass on any colds. Please note, that if your child falls sick during the day I will contact you to come and pick up your child. David Newport Principal

Newsletter No 5 August 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Independence Through Learning

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents/Carers,

Term 2 Holidays The term 2 holidays were busy for contractors at the school, if not for staff. Over the holidays we had plumbers in undertaking a number of tasks through-out the school. They were trying to find and fix the sewerage smell near Room 2. It looks like (smells like?) They succeeded! We also had Steve and a friend re-building sandpits in the jun-ior and senior yards and removing Agapanthus (Agapanthus are an OHS issue as they are poisonous if consumed). Lions Club – Mornington. Steff, as school representative, attended the Mornington Lions club AGM held at Hastings on Tuesday the 9th of July. Mornington Lions very generously donated $500.00 to the school. Thank you to the Mornington Lions, they are great supporters of our school, and thank you Steff who attend on my behalf.

Term 3 Term 3 is a big term for us. This is the term where a lot of work for the upcoming Term 4 Review needs to be car-ried out. To this end, I have asked Angela (Teacher in Room 7) to work on policy compliance. This means she is ensuring all of our policies and procedures are up to date and that we conform to the Child Safe Standards. I have asked Stuart – the teacher in room 3, to develop a data base of all of our students (the students’ names will be removed to ensure privacy) that I can use to explain to the reviewers the nature and character of our school. The data will be aggregate data that describes the school’s profile, how many male students versus female students for example.

2019 Mornington Secondary School Drum Corps Band The students had a big surprise on Wednesday the 7th of August with a visit from the 2019 Mornington Secondary

School Drum Corps Band. The band were terrific and our students loved listening and happily joined in with the drumming. The young students from the secondary college were very skilled and really entertaining. Much thanks to Mornington Secondary teacher: Paul Papeettas who organised the visit.

Our Commitment to Child Safety Mornington SDS is committed to providing a Child Safe environment where children and young people in our care are safe and feel safe and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives. We promote and protect the best interests of students involved in our programs at all times.

The ‘Woolworths Earn and Learn’!

On behalf of the staff and students at Mornington Special Devel-opmental School, we would like to sincerely thank the local com-munity for all of their hard work collecting stickers for this year’s Woolworths Earn & Learn program.

All of the stickers were counted during the holidays and we were very proud to announce that we have collected 38,680 Earn & Learn stickers, which is an AMAZING effort! This year we are re-deeming our Woolworths Earn & Learn points towards our Art program. Stay tune for our next post on Earn and learn when we receive our delivery in term 4.

Thank you once again for all your support!

Did you know Book Week is almost here? No…. Well Book week is

happening from August 17th - 23rd. Students will participate in a

number of activities including; reading the short listed books, clas-

ses will visit each other rooms to participate in a story and listen-

ing to reading with a buddy grade. We will be concluding our cele-

brations on Friday with a dress up day. We would love to see all

students come dressed as a favourite book character. We look for-

ward to seeing everyone’s fantastic costumes on our Dress-Up Day

at assembly. When: Thursday 22nd August at 10.00am. Parents be

sure to come along and see all the great costumes, feel free to get

involved and come dressed up too! Remember awesome costumes

can be created from clothes and other items you have at home.

They don’t need to be specially brought costumes.
