Production management refers to the job of coordinating and controlling the activities required to make a product, typically involving effective control of scheduling cost, performance, quality and waste requirements.

If you are to go into business, one of the skills that you must master is PLANNING. To plan is to determine in advance future goals and activities to undertake. A good business plan clearly defines the business you wish to engage in, how you envision to undertake the business, how much income you wish to gain, and how long you expect to realize such gains.

Firstly, it prevents you from going into the wrong business. As you prepare the business plan, you will see whether the business will generate enough profits or not.

Secondly, a good plan allows you to prepare for possible causes of failure in the business. You will be able to foresee possible effects of competition, and therefore take concrete steps to ensure that you capture the customers before others do.

Thirdly, a good plan allows you to size up the magnitude of demands the business may impose on you. In this way, you will know what to do in order to ensure success.

Lastly, you can use a good plan to convince others to help you in the business in case you need assistance.

Good business planning requires a lot of information seeking, hard work, and patience. Preparing the business plan will enable you to test the degree of motivation to go on to business. If you cannot work diligently enough on the plan, then you reason to doubt whether you will make it.

Plant Location and Layout

1.The population of the area- Will there be many prospective buyers who will patronize and see your business?

2.The actual and potential purchasing power of the people living in the area – can the families in the place afford to buy goods in your business.

3.Accessibility of the store to prospective customers- Is the store situated at the center of the population area or it is near the market, school, or church?

4.The buying habits of the people in the area- Do people in the place usually buy at the stores or they go to big supermarkets?

5.Probable competition from the stores of the same type- is there other general establishments nearby catering to the needs of the prospective buyers?

Layout refers to the inside arrangement and outside appearance of the business, including the goods in the counter, the display area, and the furniture inside your business establishment. The layout of the store is very important since it helps win over customers. An establishment with an attractive layout creates a good impression. It commands respect and attracts customers.

1.Physical features of the business establishment including location, size and shape of establishment space, and entrances and exits----- is the place big enough to accommodate a variety of goods?

2.Type of customers- Do you intend to attract people of one particular age or do you want to have general patronage?

3.Type of merchandise- Do you intend to sell dry or wet goods?

4.Kinds of tools and equipment used.
