Progress of Redemption

“As truly as I live, all the

earth shall be filled with

the glory of the Lord.”

Numbers 14:21

1 Earth, not heaven, will

be the target for the

accomplishment of

God’s plans.

2 The goal involves the

inhabitants of Earth.

3

The realization of this goal

will be accomplished when

there is a people on Earth

filled with God

Look for evidence of “The

Goal” as you read your Bible

The Biggest Separation

THE OPENING SCENE

Genesis 12: God begins to speak

God begins to act

God turns from the human race to

one man – from whom there was to

arise a miracle of history.

TEN WORDS

“In the beginning God created the

heaven and the earth.” Gen. 1:1

FIVE WORDS

“He made the stars also” Gen. 1:16

THIRTEEN + CHAPTERS

Describing the life of Abraham!

“I am not going to work a sudden

miracle from heaven: I shall work

through you.”

Whenever God wants to do

something, He will look for a man!

THE CHARTER OF SALVATION

Genesis 12:1-3

Once given this passage dominates

the entire story. What in the Bible

precedes this text is introduction.

GENESIS 12:1-3

All that follows, to the last chapter

of Revelation, is the story of the

development and fulfillment of this

Promise.

“For My thoughts are not

your thoughts, neither are

your wayers My ways, saith

the Lord.” Isaiah 55:8

And the Lord said to Abraham,

“In thee shall all the families of

the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:4

ABRAHAMIC COVENANT

I WILL make of thee a great nation.

I WILL bless thee.

I WILL make they name great.

I WILL make you a blessing to others.

I WILL bless your allies and curse your

enemies.

I WILL bless all peoples of the earth

through you.

Step One: The

Founding Fathers

Genesis 12-50

Covers 1000s of years Covers portion of one’s life

“And the Lord said to Abram …

Lift up now thine eyes, and look

from the place where thou art

northward, and southward, and

eastward, and westward: for all the

LAND which thou seed, to thee will

I give it, and to thy seed forever.”

Genesis 13:14-15

The dust of the earth

The stars of the heaven

The sand upon the shore

“And Rebekah’s family blessed her,

and said unto her … ‘Be thou the

mother of thousands of millions …’

(but) Isaac entreated the Lord for his

wife, because she was BARREN.”

Genesis 24:60; 25:21

And Rachel (Jacob’s wife) was

BARREN.” Genesis 29:30-31

WHAT PROGRESS LOOKS LIKE

“And Isaac entreated the Lord for his

wife, because she was barren, and

the Lord answered … behold, there

were twins in her womb.”

Genesis 25:21, 24

“Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.”

Genesis 24:22

HOW IMPORTANT ARE

THE PATRIARCHS?

In the covenants which God in His

sovereignty made with Abraham, Isaac

and Jacob … are all the dealings of

His grace and all the purposes of His

Kingdom.

STEP TWO: The Tribal

Framework

Genesis 30; 49:28

ONE PROPHECY

24 VERSES FOR 12 PEOPLE

Jacob assembled his 12 sons to

prophesy their tribal future. This

prophecy covers in a remarkable

manner the entire sweep of

Israelite history—past, present

and future.

Zoom Lens on Joseph

Not a patriarch

No covenant made with God

13 chapter “biography”

Abraham Isaac Jacob

13.5 8 10 Joseph 13

“And God spake unto Israel (Jacob)

In the visions of the night, and said

…‘Fear not to go down into Egypt;

for I will there make of thee a great

nation.”

Genesis 46:3

Joseph was the link between the

family of Israel and the nation of

Israel.

By his God-given wisdom and

foresight, Joseph was able to save

the Egyptians from starvation and

to grant 70 of his relatives a haven

in Goshen, the richest portion of

Egypt.

Thus we see the hand of God

overruling, leading and blessing.

“It was not you that sent

me hither, but God. God

did send me before you to

preserve life … to preserve

you a posterity in the earth,

and to save your lives by a

great deliverance.”

Genesis 45:5-8

STEP THREE: People!

Ex. 1

70 People do not a nation make!

Let alone a “GREAT NATION.”

Nonetheless, this is still progress

Exodus

FIVE EXCLAMATION POINTS

Exodus 1:7 And the children of Israel:

Were FRUITFUL! and

INCREASED ABUNDANTLY! and

MULTIPLIED! and

WAXED EXCEEDINGLY MIGHTY! and

the land was FILLED! with them.

Well, one thing is for sure:

The Israelites are growing as a people.

“And Pharoah said to his people,

‘Behold, the people of the children of

Israel are more and mightier than we!”

Exodus 1:19

“The more they afflicted them, the more

they multiplied and grew.”

Exodus 1:13

This is the first time in the Biblical record

that we find human opposition to what

God is doing!

“I am going to

stop God”

STEP FOUR: A Leader

for God’s People

Exodus 2-4

STEP FIVE:

Deliverance From Egypt

Exodus 5-15

Man Handling the Work of God

DELIVERANCE: THE DIVINE WAY

“And God heard their groaning, and

God remembered His covenant

with Abraham, with Isaac, and with

Jacob. And God looked upon the

children of Israel, and God thought

about them with favor.” Ex. 2:25

WHENEVER GOD WORKS …

He always tells us what He is going

to do BEFORE He does it!

GOD’S LEADERSHIP STYLE

It’s quite different than man’s

Moses was the first theocratic

leader in God’s program

Theocracy isn’t the DIRECT

governmental rule of God in the

affairs of men.

ISRAEL: THE THEOCRATIC NATION

PURPOSE OF THE EXODUS

“That thou mayest know that there

is none like Me in all the earth.”

Exodus 9:14

Because of what God did here, a

special relationship was created

between God and Israel. A

disparate group of families and

clans were now made into a people

who thought of themselves as “the

people of God.”

Two nations cannot exist in one

country. They each must have

their own land.

STEP SIX:

The Culture of a Nation

Exodus 20 - Deuteronomy

STEP SEVEN :

Conquering the Land

Numbers 13-36, Joshua

All of the covenant promises are

conditioned on Israel being in the

land, and they become effective

only when she is there.

SPY OUT THE LAND? REALLY?

?

WE ARE UNABLE

Unbelief never gets beyond the

difficulties—the cities, the walls, the

giants.

“And the Lord said to Moses,

‘I have pardoned according to thy

word; But … as truly as I live, all

the earth shall be filled with the

glory of the Lord.”

Numbers 14:2

Moses, I can’t do it with this

generation of people, but, believe

Me, I WILL DO IT.

UNBELIEF AND REBELLION

God can overcome any obstacle

except unbelief and rebellion in

God’s people

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE

God overcame

- barren women

- Pharaoh’s madness

- satan himself

But not rebellion and/or unbelief.

JOSHUA 1-12: Conquering Israel

Joshua smote all the country - on

mountains and in valleys. He left

no king alive, but utterly destroyed

all that breathed.

OBSTACLES

- Professional armies

- Walled cities

- 31 kings removed

- Giants were in the land

ENCAMPMENT AT GILGAL

THE LAND IS CONQUERED

AND ASSIGNED

STEP EIGHT: Tribes

Established in the Land Judges and Ruth

Covers 40-60 years, during

which Israel, under Joshua,

broke the military might of

Canaan in preparation of

taking the land.

Covers about 300 to 350

years, during which Israel

settled, by tribal lot, the

land

The 12 Tribes are

functioning independently!

AFTER JOSHUA’S DEATH

- 12 tribes acted independently

- Many differences amongst tribes

- All the enemies were not routed

THEREFORE, God’s goal of a

unified people was not on track.

-

THE TRIBES

- Were settled for about 350 years

- Leadership vacuum

THE LORD RAISED UP JUDGES

- They are theocratic leaders

Judges 2:16-8

GROSS IMMORALITY & IDOLATRY

WILL DELAY GOD’S PLANS

Micah & Dan Gross Idolatry

How men dealt with God!

Men of Gibeah Gross Immorality

How men dealt with each other

NO KING

“In those days there was no king in

Israel; every man did that which was

right in his own eyes.

Judges 21:25

RUTH

Just a little love story?

Think again.

“Now it came to pass in the days

when the judges ruled” Ruth 1:1

RUTH & BOAZ

Linkage to the future king.

“And Obed begat Jesse, and

Jesse begat David …” Ruth 4:22

Moabitess: not allowed in the temple

Boaz’ mother was Rahab the harlot

STEP NINE: Samuel,

The Prophet-Judge I Samuel 1-7

SAMUEL

Word of the Lord was rare in those

days. Gross Immorality & Idolatry

rampant, even in the temple.

Age 12

Israel’s last judge and first “Prophet”

Annointed Israel’s 1st two kings

STEP TEN:

The Monarchy Under Saul I Samuel 8-31

MONARCHY VS. THEOCRACY

Man-Ruled Governmentt

MONARCHY VS. THEOCRACY

God-Rules Through Human Agentt

THREE KINGS, THREE KINGDOMS

No Heart SAUL

Heart for God DAVID

Half a Heart SOLOMON

DAVID WAS CROWNED,

BUT TOOK THE THRONE

16 years after he was anointed

by the Prophet Samuel

When God finally brought David

to the throne, David gave it back

to God.

AS A MAN OF WAR

David longed to build God a house, a

permanent temple.

Because he was a warrior, God would

only let him gather provisions for it.

Solomon built the first and largest

temple.

A RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE

Bring great glory to God.

The theocracy under Solomon was

amazing.

--The economy was so good gold and

silver were in abundance.

--His wisdom was legend.

--Because of David, Solomon never

saw what sin did to the nation

THE TEMPLE

Was the only place on earth where

men could meet God!

It was the only place where men

could find forgiveness of their sins.

It was the only place where God

guaranteed that the Gentiles would

have their prayers answered.

GOD STARTED WITH A NATION

Because He will be dealing with all

the nations on earth.

--some from every tongue, tribe and

nation will be found praising God in

heaven.

--the nations will be judged

--believers are to disciple the nations
