In reviewing the study area, it is clear that the neighborhood has not made much accomodations for bicycle riders. The streets are dominated by cars and buses. Few streets have bicylce lanes, and during the site visit, cars often double park in the bycicle lanes, forcing riders to put themselves in the way of vehicular traffic. According to the United States Census Bureau, 60% of the population do not have vehicles. Since such a large percentage of residents are not drivers, vehicles should not be made the priority of the neighborhood. Prohibiting parking of vehicles, and finding a designated sub-sidized garage location for residents , will allow the streets to be designated for bicyles, walking and public transportation. Retail shoppers can ac-cess businesses through the robust public transporation options, and using parking garages or limited metered parking if making the choice to drive.

Additionally, the lack of traffic lights at the intersections on Flatbush Avenue, may be a contributing cause of accidents on the corridor. While visiting the study area, I observed several people crossing in the streets, and I can understand why. Although not safer, it is much easi-er to cross at the intersection that will leave you closer to where you want to go, than to walk further to the intersection with the traffic controls.

It is time for this neighborhood to prioritize the safety of pedstrians and bicyle riders. To create a single street path for bicyle riders is very skimpish . Let’s share the streets and make room for PEOPLE.
