So, why does your dog shed? Seasonal change Their skin is irritated

Skin irritation is another cause of heavy shedding

If your dog’s skin is flaky due to allergies, the hair can fall out much quicker and in larger amounts

Four phases of natural hair growth

1. Anagen is the first phase of the hair growth cycle in which there is new growth of hair.

2. The next is stage is Catagen, where the hair stops growing and the outer root sheath attaches to the hair.

3. The third is Telogen (a dog owner’s favorite stage) which is the resting phase where hair doesn’t grow or shed.

4. Lastly is Exogen, when the hair falls out and then hair follicles return to the Anagen phase.

Seasonal Changes Larger breeds normally go through

“Seasonal Shedding” so they grow heavier, thicker coats in the winter to insulate them from the cold weather and then they shed excess hair in the warmer summer months

Smaller breeds usually don’t shed as much but they also lose hair, it can be due to either breakage or damaged strands
