RDA FOR ACQUISITIONS & COPY CATALOGING

10/11/2010

1

Preparing for Change

10/11/2010

2

We will not try to get into the theoretical basis of RDA--but recognizing certain principles is unavoidable!

Our modest goals-- Be able to recognize when a record has

been cataloged using RDA rules Start becoming familiar with significant

differences between AACR2 and RDA Avoid "correcting" RDA cataloging that differs

from AACR2

RDA -- What Is It?

10/11/2010

3

RDA= Resource Description and Access Developed by Anglo-American national libraries

and associations but usable beyond English-speakers

Supersedes AACR2 cataloging rules for description and access; will affect subjects to some degree

Intended to be more friendly to computers & users, and to be usable internationally Based on the IFLA Functional Requirements for

Bibliographic Records [FRBR] and the Statement of International Cataloguing Principles

RDA -- When?

10/11/2010

4

RDA is being tested, but the RDA "test" records you find in OCLC will be valid for use

For the testing program, beginning Oct. 1, the Library of Congress and selected libraries (YUL is not one of them) will begin to contribute records following RDA rules

Member contributors will enter RDA records directly in OCLC; LC RDA records will be loaded into OCLC on the same schedule as other LC bibliographic records

Test period ends in December, but some libraries will continue to contribute RDA records in OCLC

Decision on nationwide implementation summer 2011

6

Accept RDA cataloging found in OCLC as you would any other full/core level cataloging--RDA cataloging is NOT a parallel record

Caution: some of the changes resulting from the RDA rules will look like "errors"

Do not try to revise RDA records to AACR2 Do not try to revise AACR2 records (Leader

Cataloging Form: a) using the RDA rules LC CIP: refer to the Catalog Training Librarian

RDA Principles

10/11/2010

7

Transcribe what you see Less emphasis on translating what is on the page or

label, etc. into cataloging-specific conventions The record should be more comprehensible to

the user (but not necessarily to the cataloger) Avoid cataloging abbreviations unless well-known De-emphasize "catalogers talking to catalogers"

Core is the new default (the bib record as wiki) Maintain continuity with AACR2

Parallel Titles (Transcribe Where You See)

10/11/2010

11

Parallel title doesn't have to be on the title page--you can transcribe the title page but take the parallel title from the cover, half-title, anywhere on the book (or other resource)

Not limited to 2 parallel titles; in fact, the implication in RDA may be that all parallel titles must be transcribed.

Statement of responsibility doesn't have to be on the title page; still required to use the title page, but if necessary, cataloger can take all or part of the statement of responsibility from somewhere else, as long as it's on the bookTitle page: A New History of French Literature.Verso t.p.: Edited by Denis Hollier245 02 ‡a A New History of French Literature /

transcribed as they appear in the statement of responsibility (option to omit; ellipses not needed). Sections in blue are not transcribed in AACR2: 245 … / ‡c by E. Nolue Emenanjo, Executive

Cataloger can make 700s for one, two, three or none The 700 (or 700's) for one, two, or three of

the others does not need to be justified.

Access Points

Relationship terms (‡e) are encouraged Terms from the authorized list in RDA, but LC will only

be making them for illustrators of children's books, and for translators (all, apparently)--but no restriction on other testers

Some RDA rules would affect NACO authority records; how to handle locally during the test period is not yet decided; examples: Expanded use of profession qualifiers to distinguish

modern authors if dates are not available: 100 1_ ‡a Smith, John ‡c (Professor); 100_1 ‡a Smith, John ‡c (Composer)

Bible: “O.T.” and “N.T.” dropped if specific books are named--split files result; if specific book is not named, use Bible. Old Testament; Bible. New Testament.

corporate bodies) can be used as access points; not clear how this is going to be expressed, so this is a guess:100 1_ ‡a Watson, John H.245 10 ‡a The seven-per-cent solution / ‡c being a reprint

Inconsistencies

10/11/2010

29

Application of RDA is still a work in progress -- that's what the testing is for

Expect inconsistencies of application; using RDA will become more standardized, especially if it is adopted by the national libraries

OCLC

OCLC will not permit 2 master records in the database where one is AACR2 and the other is RDA

OCLC: RDA original master records may be contributed but AACR2 records already in WorldCat cataloged as blank, 1, 4,8, I, or L must NOT be updated to RDA (some flexibility for serials)

Minimal & Descriptive Rules i or blank records can be updated/upgraded to RDA; once done, they cannot be re-updated to AACR2 (and vice versa from A2 to RDA)

OCLC: if record in WorldCat is coded as RDA, do not update to AACR2

31

For now, wait until there is a decision from LC before investing in detailed training or an implementation schedule

Catalogers are using Torbis to create RDA records (or modify AACR2 records to RDA) using some of the tools in the upcoming slides

If you go into Torbis, you can retrieve them by doing a keyword search using "rda" From the records retrieved, look for 040 with ‡e

rda

Key Points

10/11/2010

32

RDA records will begin to appear in OCLC in October 2010

Know the 040/Leader configuration for RDA records Know some of the more obvious “tells” that

characterize an RDA record (e.g. 336-338) Once the record is identified as RDA, leave it as is Don’t confuse RDA differences from AACR2 as

errors National/international policy on adoption will not

be decided until ca. mid-2011

RDA Toolkit

RDA is intended to be used online (unlike AACR2)

Access via IP range; currently subscription limits to 20 concurrent users

Under the Tools tab, the mapping of MARC to RDA is very useful since the RDA organization does not follow ISBD order--and doesn't have an index
