Reference Wrap-up: Agonizing Art and
Freaky Film
Erin Conor, Performing Arts Librarian, Reed CollegeLisa Hooper, Head Music & Media Librarian, Tulane UniversityKathleen DeLaurenti, Arts Librarian, College of William & Mary

Taking on a new subject area: what to do??
I have subject responsibilities. . .• outside of music.• in the performing arts.• in the fine arts or film.• in at least one other humanities disciplines, like
English literature.• in foreign language(s).• in a discipline I haven’t even mentioned yet-
science, math, etc.
Working with your new department
• Develop relationships with your faculty.• What are the creative practitioners in the
department doing- artists, filmmakers, etc.? Make sure the library has materials to support these activities.
• Learn the research and teaching interests. What drives inquiry in this discipline?
• Purchase faculty publications.
Understanding the collection
• Become familiar with major journals, whether through Ulrich's, DOAJ, NEWJOUR listserv, etc.
• Set up journal alerts for new articles through Cambridge UP, Taylor & Francis, etc.
• If you have an intern or student assistant, have him or her assess the collection.
• Review collection development policies from other libraries.
Utilizing your professional networks
• Sign up for relevant listservs.• See specialized professional organizations (ARLIS, etc.)
for info! Do they have helpful publications? Local chapter meetings also a good source for connections and information.
• Investigate non-library organizations: the equivalent of AMS or SMT.
• Browse libguides from top institutions for the discipline.• Ask for help and ideas! Ask on MLA-L and within your
own library.
Be excited! Not everybody gets to take on new subject areas. You'll learn a lot and can apply your
knowledge to music.
