Hello, I’m Sara. Do you want to know my family?

My family

The two boys are my brothers. The girl is my sister, Suzan.

It’s my family’s picture:

The man who (that) is wearing a brown coat is my father.

The man is my father.He is wearing a brown coat.

The woman who (that) is wearing a white blouse is my mother.

The woman is my mother.She is wearing a white blouse.

The woman who (that) is sitting is my grandmother.

The woman is my grandmother.She is sitting.

The boys whom (that) you see in the picture are my cousins.

The boys are my cousins.You see them in the picture.

The shoes which (that) my cousin is wearing are mine.

These shoes are mine.My cousin is wearing them.

These books which (that) you see are my father’s.

These books are my father’s.You see these books.

The laptop which is on the bed is Suzan’s.

This laptop is Suzan’s.It’s on the bed.

The dog which is sitting here is mine.

This dog is mine.It’s sitting here.

Now, review the pictures more carefully…

These people whom you see are Sara’s family.

Whose family is it?

The boys who are playing squash are Sara’s cousins.

The boy who is wearing shoes is also Sara’s cousin.

The laptop which Suzan bought last year is on the bed.

The dog which is wearing shoes is Sara’s.

These people whom you see are Sara’s family.

The boys who are playing squash are Sara’s cousins.

The laptop which Suzan bought last year is on the bed.

The dog which is wearing shoes is Sara’s.

Compare the following sentences:

The red sentences = Relative clause who/whom/which = Relative pronouns

Who = subject relative pronoun Is used for person. relative clause

E.g. The boys who are playing squash are Sara’s cousins.

person verb

So, we can conclude that:

Whom = object relative pronoun Is used for person.

e.g. These people whom you see are Sara’s family.

person subject

Which = subject & object relative pronoun Is used for objects and animals.

The dog which is wearing shoes is Sara’s.

animal verb

The laptop which Suzan bought last year is on the bed.

object subject

That can be used instead of them, too.

That = which, whom & who
