Dilys Powell was multitalented. She was best known as a motion-picture

critic. British born July 20, 1901, died June 3, 1995 in London, England. She

was the outspoken film critic for The Sunday Times (1939-79) and Punch

(1979-92) and then The Sunday Times’ reviewer for movies shown on British

television (1976-95). She wielded enormous power over the success or failure

of virtually every screen actor and every film shown in Britain for more

than half a century. Powell studied modern languages at Somerville College,

Oxford, began writing for The Sunday Times in 1928, and joined the staff

full-time in 1936. She also authored a number of most successful books. In

the present 1943 publication of her 1941 book “Remember Greece”, she

refers to Greece before and during WW II and outlines the Greek stand and

contribution to the allied victory.
