METHOD REFERENCE
CompuChem® employs the Modified Environmental Monitoring and SupportLaboratory-Cincinnati (EMSL-CI) Procedure to be Used for Low Levels of Volatilesin Soils and Sediments for the preparation of solid samples and instrumentoperating parameters for volatile library search. This procedure is a modifica-tion of the published USEPA Method 624, Volume 49 of the October 26, 1984 FederalRegister.
Method Summary
A 5 gram sample is weighed and transferred with 10 mis of water to a speciallydesigned impinger. The impinger is then heated to 55°C and this temperature ismaintained while purging for 12 minutes. "After purging is completed, the sor-bent column is heated and backflushed with the inert gas to desorb thepurgeables onto a gas chromatographic column...which are then detected with amass spectrometer."
Semi-quantitative analysis (library search) is performed by automatic comparisonof the unknown peak spectrum to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) massspectral library. Estimated concentration is calculated using the known con-centration and peak area of the closest internal standard while assuming aresponse factor of one for the unknown compound.

Q U A L I T Y CONTROL SUMMARY
In a d d i t i o n to the control measures specified by Methods 624and o u t l i n e d in the method summary of t h i s report, t h i s v o l a t i l ea n a l y s i s e n t a i l s the introduction of client/case s p e c i f i e dq u a l i t y control samples. These QC samples are a u t o m a t i c a l l yintroduced by CompuChem's laboratory management systems at arate of at least one set for every twenty samples b e a r i n g thesame case ID received in a thirty day time period. The exactrate of QC sample i n t r o d u c t i o n is c o n t r o l l e d by the c l i e n tt h r o u g h the a s s i g n m e n t of case i d e n t i f i e r s . The QC samples,c o n s i s t i n g of d u p l i c a t e sample spikes and a s i n g l e b l a n k s p i k e ,are i n t r o d u c e d w i t h the first sample in each series of twentyfor each i d e n t i f i e d case.
The sample spikes processed for the samples associated w i t ht h i s report were prepared u s i n g an o r i g i n a l sample selectedfrom the sample c l i e n t defined case. The a n a l y t i c a l datao b t a i n e d for the o r i g i n a l sample, both s a m p l e s p i k e s , the s p i k ec o n c e n t r a t i o n , percent recoveries, the s p i k s s and r e l a t i v epercent difference have been i n c l u d e d in t h i s report in the formof the S p i k e Summary Table. The control l i m i t s for i n d i v i d u a lcompound recoveries and r e l a t i v e percent differences are i n c l u d e din the summary table. Sample m a t r i x can a d v e r s e l y affect therecovery and precision data. Following the conventions established by the EPA for qualifying common labora-tory artifacts in samples analyzed under the Contract Laboratory Program (CLP)Caucus Organics Protocols, we have reported the following compound with the"B" footnote:

Methylene Chloride ___23____ ug/kg
The "B" indicates that this analyte was also detected in the associated MethodBlank (and/or Instrument Blank). This footnote is only used for the commonlaboratory solvent, methylene chloride.
When both an Instrument Blank and a Method Blank are prepared, the "B" foot-note is applied to associated sample data if a common artifact is detected ineither blank. Compositing Blanks are prepared with samples that require com-positing of all as-received sample containers. Since the entire sample isconsumed in the process, repreparation and reanalysis of a composited sampleis not possible. Therefore, exceptions are made to allowable levels of blankcontamination in such instances.
The EPA-CLP protocols permit up to 25 ug/1 of methylene chloride in volatileblanks. Our policy is much more stringent for non-CLP requirements. Themaximum allowable level for methylene chloride in Instrument Blanks is 5 ug/1(2 ug/1 for blanks associated with Lower Detection Limit sample) unless suc-cessive blanks indicate a consistent background level of methylene chloride.The concentration of methylene chloride in solid Method Blanks may not exceed25 ug/kg. Exceptions to these policies are made only when sample HoldingTimes are in jeopardy of being exceeded.
Data Interpretation: General EPA Guidelines
In evaluating data usability, the EPA uses certain general guidelines forassessing the presence of common laboratory artifacts in samples. If the con-centration of an artifact in a sample is greater than ten times that in theblank, the blank contribution is considered negligible. If blank and sampleconcentrations are comparable (sample level not greater than twice the blanklevel), the presence of that compound in the sample is considered suspect.
