REPORT ON ACCOMPLISHMENTSFOR PERIOD

NOVEMBER 2010 TO MAY 2011.

Addressing the Research and Teaching NexusIn Higher Education

Presented by: Joy Francis and Daryl Steele

•Abstract

•Definition of the Nexus

•What Researchers Say: Is there a relationship

between Research and Teaching?

•Conclusions and Recommendations

Outline

The paper addresses the research – teaching nexus in Higher Education. A review of various models of the relationship between research and teaching is presented to argue if there is link between research and teaching.

Recommendations are provided. It is argued that strategies should be developed to enhance the relationship.

Abstract

Brad Wuetherick (2009): “the teaching and research nexus refers to any aspect of the interplay between the teaching and research roles of universities, whether at a level of the institution, faculty, department, curriculum…”

Definition of the Nexus

• Quantitative Studies…What are they saying?

•Models showing a zero relationship or a negative relationship.

What Researchers Say?

1.Different Enterprise Model

2. Unrelated Personality Model

3. Bureaucratic Funding Model

Models

1.The Scarcity Model

2. Differential Personality Model

3.Divergent Rewards Systems Model

Models

•Qualitative Studies...What are they saying?

•Definitions of teaching and research needs to be

addressed before a nexus can be determined.

•Examples of Universities incorporating Research

and Teaching.

•Do we want to PROVE the cause or SHOW the

relationships?

What Researchers Say: The Need to explore!

UWI – Research Seminars and Conferences, Existence of Research

Units, Publications (Journals), Dissertations, Research and Teaching

Assistants

Universities….. University of Central Lancashire – Research

Seminars and Conferences, Existence of Research Units, Publications (Journals), Dissertations, Undergraduate Research

societies

Simon Frasier University , Canada – Research Seminars and Conferences, Existence of Research Units, Publications (Journals),

Dissertations, lecturers informed students of Research interests at beginning of the

semester

What are the Outcomes?

• Critical Thinking

•Superior methodological skills

• More employable

• Credible updated examples

• Catalyst for Knowledge-based economies

The existence of a positive correlation between teaching and research cannot be taken as a given.

However, it can be achieved between the two concepts, through adoption of active strategies or recommendations.

Conclusion

•At University Level

•Draft Policies

•Encourage construction of Knowledge

Recommendations

•At Faculty Level

•Develop performance indicators

•Develop reward systems for academics

• Place students in research

environments

Recommendations

•At Department Level•Utilise research – related outputs such as publications as a basis for examples during lectures.•Discuss research interests at orientation events•Lecturers to indicate appointment times as well as encourage more electronic contact.

Recommendations

•At curriculum Level•Introduce staff research interests to students through specific courses.

•Encourage strategies that develop student research skills.

Recommendations

•“Teaching and research are as inseparable as wool and mutton on a sheep farm”, Ball (1992)
