Public Opinion of Gay Marriage: Does the Media Have an Influence upon the Public’s Opinion of Gay Marriage?

IntroductionThe modern delivery of information and visual representations of American culture is derived from media outlets. Television news provide reports of current events and controversial issues. Television shows are reflections of the society and social norms in which we live. With the media providing much of the information provided to citizens, is there possibility of that media influencing the public opinion of current issues, such as gay marriage?

The Will & Grace EffectModern television integrates gay culture with

mainstream culture.Shows, such as Will & Grace introduce shows based on

gay culture to mainstream society. It is has become common place for homosexual

characters and their relationships to be depicted on popular television shows (Quimby, 2005).

Desperate Housewives The Modern Family Brothers & Sisters

Individuals are more commonly exposed to homosexuals and homosexual relationships and the interaction and role within American culture than in years past (Netzley, 2006).

Media Influence• Of ten delivered with sensationalism and potential bias.

Public Opinion

As a democracy, the right for gays to marry is decided through a democratic vote.

Most states have voted to deny the legalization of gay marriage or alternatives to marriage.

Recently, a surge of support for gay marriage and other rights has occurred.
