P resident’s Message The summer monsoon
season is over and has
again modified your favorite
trail. Several of our members have been
"checking out" to confirm Mother Nature is
having fun with some of your favorite obstacles.
Over the last four years your club has been
averaging over 115 runs from here to Moab. At
our last Trail Boss Meeting we already have 14
runs listed. Trail Bosses have been helping our
local BLM keep our trails open by monitoring
trail conditions. Examples of monitoring are
many but one is mine fencing where it keeps
others safe. On our High Line Run one mine shaft
has been repaired more than four times the last
few years because of Trail Boss reports.
Hopefully we can encourage other clubs to work
with our BLM as we work on our TMPs. We have
had a long good working relationship with our
local BLM.
Speaking of runs, we can always use more trail
bosses. If you haven't led a run yet, try it, there is
no dust at the front. Any of our existing trail
bosses will be willing to help. Trail Boss meetings
schedule is on our web site.
Our club activities continue with Cooks Night
Out, Men's Breakfast,
and Ladies Luncheon.
So check our Activities
Schedule on our web for
dates and times when
leaders post them.
Happy trails to you, John

the gang down here starting round 8 AM
and closing down ‘bout 9 AM Monday thru
Friday. You’ll find mostly Havasu 4
Wheelers guys here all congregating
and having a good time exchanging
stories and catching up on trail info, the
weather, and of course jeep stuff! All us
old timers know about this fun daily
gathering and some come every day, some
once or twice a week, some once in a
while. But we want you ‘new’ folks to
know you’re welcome to join in too.”

Trail Boss Ward Bond says
“Check your rig now”
♫ Roll Along Wagon Train, rollin' over prairies where there
ain't no grass, rollin' over mountains where there ain't no
pass, sittin' all aboard high in the weather, praying to the
Lord we stay together, side by side on the wagon train….♪
“Now listen up Pilgrims, us Trail Bosses have got together and they hereby appointed me to
explain the way things are done out here on a run.”
“This month the trail bosses want you to check you rig over now, and prior to heading
out into injun territory. Sit up and pays attention as here’s your list of important
chores to do NOW.
Crawl under your prairie schooner and check all them there nuts and bolts that hold
that darn thing together. Is something a wobbling or leaking? Them there tires good?
How ‘bout them fan belts and other things that go round? Don’t forget fluid levels,
check that air filter, and look in the radiator. We told you last month to check your
radio so that’s one less thing to worry about.
Don’t be giving me any flimsy tin horn jabber flap about it! You got a jack and a lug
wrench? How about some basic tools? If it’s due for the blacksmith shop get ‘er fixed
up now and enjoy your time in the air conditioned lounge. You don’t want to bake your
brain out on the trail broke down. Having your Misses sitting on a rock while your rig
is having a cantankerous conniption really makes an impression - and may affect her
support of your jeeping time!
Now for you new settlers who think riding the trail will be like a walk in Central Park
you’re jus plum daffy. We don’t like problems so git your stuff squared away pronto.

Floy Wash & Sego Ghost Town Trail
Sept. 15th, 2014
T he day started clear and sunny until the one and
only black cloud found us and proceeded to follow
us most of the morning. At first we were thankful
for the few rain drops as it kept the dust down for a while,
but then it stopped and the dust started to stick to the rain
drops. Darn! Our nice easy trail was great at the lower
elevation but drastically changed the higher we went,
thanks to Mother Nature, with frequent wash outs that
were manageable until we hit the BIG ONE…..3 ½ft across
by about 4ft deep. We got out our little collapsible shovels
and thought with a little work we could fill it in. WRONG.
The dirt was like concrete. After scouting the area we
decided the creek running along the road was doable, so we
drove down the bank, went a few hundred yards down the
stream and found an area where we could climb up the
bank and onto the road. Mission Accomplished.
The trails starts in the flats and ultimately took us on top of
a mesa where we had fantastic views of the area with I-70 in
the distance, where the semi-trucks looked like miniature
toys. Along the way we drove past some beautiful sandstone
cliffs of various shades of brown, golden yellow with a
splash of gray and black. The wildlife in the area got a
helping hand from mankind as there were 2 wildlife water
catchment areas which hopefully the flock of chukar was
saw took advantage of.
At the end of Floy Wash we headed up the trail to take a
look at the remains of the old coal mining town of Sego. As
we approached the old stone general store, much to our
surprise, there sat a black bear probably about 2 years old.
It didn’t seem to be too intimidated by us.
On the way out we stopped to look at the pictographs and
petroglyphs that were done by 3 different Indian
groups….Ute, Fremont and Barrier. From there we headed
out toward I-70 and came across a small herd of Antelopes
just outside Thompson Springs.
Thank you to all who came on the run and a special Thank
You to Ed Minkler (guest on the run) for doing an excellent
job as trail gunner.

Buckhorn Wash and Black Dragon Wash
Sept. 16th, 2014
T oday’s run was on the west side of Green River and
before we even arrived at the turn off I spotted 5
burros along the highway. Love to see wildlife!
This trail has a variety of terrain, starting out in a flat
meadow area, where we stopped to look at a sink hole, and
get pictures of a snake that was sunning itself in the road.
Farther down the trail it changes to pinion pines with deep
rocky caverns, which at times were on both sides of the road.
The most amazing part of the trail is when you get into the
red sand stone cliffs with black varnish. It is hard to
describe the beauty of the area as some of the rocks are
smooth from the water flowing over them, some rocks have
scooped out holes in them, some look as if they have been
carved by some giant tool, and some look like giant building
blocks. Not only are the shapes interesting but the colors
vary so much and as you look at the large boulder above you
near the trail, it makes you wonder how much force would
be needed to send them crashing down onto the trail. About
2 miles from the end of the trail we came to the Barrier
Canyon style pictographs which are believed to be at least
1500 years old.
Thank you to the people who came on the run and a special
Thank You to Ed Minkler (guest on the run) for being our
tail gunner.

Woblin Gablin Run, October 31st
Temple Mtn. / Swasey’s Cabin / Rod Valley Trails
Sept. 17th, 2014
O nce again we headed west out of Green River
and then headed south across meadows and
through pinion pines and along the way saw
more burros and antelope. From the trail the view went
on forever with numerous mesa’s and buttes in the
distance.
We stopped at the Swasey Cabin which was built in 1921
for the family who were tending the cattle in the area.
Toward the end of the trail we came upon some of the
stone building and mining tunnels that are still there from
the uranium mining era in the Temple Mountains. In the
1898 the uranium was used primarily for the production
of glass and ceramics. By 1905 the interest in uranium ore
changed to radium recovery which continued until 1968
when the market for uranium declined.
Thank you to all who came on the run and a special
Thank You to Frank & Martha Travis for being tail

Buckhorn Wash – Wedge Over-look - Green River Cutoff Trails
Sept. 18th, 2014
T oday our run took us farther down the Buckhorn
Trail and into more beautiful country. You start
out in meadows, then into the gorgeous red cliffs
and eventually into the golden yellow-brown cliffs. Along
the way we stopped at a swinging bridge that was
dedicated in 1937 and used to transport people,
merchandise and animals across the Green River. Next
came the tallest pictographs I have ever seen with an
interpretation of what the Indians were trying to say with
their drawings. It was also amazing to see how much
graffiti was on the walls before they were cleaned in 1995.
Our next stop was at the San Rafael Swell overlook which
they call the “Little Grand Canyon” and let me tell you
they got that right. Looking down the canyon at the river,
some 300ft below, was breathe taking.
The next interesting stop was at some tunnels the military
bore into the sandstone in 1948 to check the effect of
explosives on the rocks. Too bad they were all blocked
off, as it would have been interesting to see how deep and
wide they were. Once again the terrain changed to hills
where the dirt had been washed away leaving dark rocks
with lighter almost white stripes. What a geological
wonder.
Thank you to the people who came on the run and a
special Thank You to Frank & Martha Travis for being
tail gunners.

Planet Ranch
We may again be able to transit to and from La Paz and
Mohave counties via the county roads that approach and
then transect Planet Ranch. All the result of a pending
and very complicated land sale which includes a water
rights transfer, some land donation, an environmental
impact mitigation effort involving numerous Federal and
States’ agencies, Public Power entities and environmental
groups and some new water benefits to local Indian
Tribes. We recently met with Pat Barber, Regional
Supervisor of the Arizona Game & Fish Department and
whose agency will receive the majority of the Planet
Ranch property. He indicated his willingness to re-open
many of the existing ranch roads to public use and that
the ‘deal’ should be finalized within six months. The
Havasu 4 Wheelers committed to him our willingness to
GPS the existing roads and trails, assist with mapping
and recommendations on suitable routes, and other
support as appropriate.

A HAVASU 4 WHEELERS 2014 PUBLICATION LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA
HAVASU 4 WHEELERS, PROUD MEMBERS
- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.
RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
