Retrospectives

Issue

Teams and Organizations don’t get sufficient value out of Retrospectives

Hypothesis

If

There is little or no value coming from a Sprint Retrospective

Then

YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

What is the purpose of a Retrospective?

From the latest Scrum Guide:

The purpose of the Sprint Retrospective is to:

• Inspect how the last Sprint went with regards to people, relationships, process, and tools;

• Identify and order the major items that went well and potential improvements; and,

• Create a plan for implementing improvements to the way the Scrum Team does its work.

Steve’s Retrospective Flow

• Review – Evaluate changes made in previous Sprint

– Use empirical evidence to evaluate the Sprint

• Reflect – Use emotional experience to evaluate the Sprint

– What did we learn from the sprint

• Revise – Use what you’ve learned from

Revise & Reflect to determine what to change

Review

• Changes

– Did we get the expected results? or not? Why not?

– Do they need to be adjusted?

– Where there any side effects?

• Empirical Analysis

– Data

– Plan vs Actual

– Metrics

– Ask Why?

Reflection

• How did I feel about…

– What went well?

– What could have been better?

– What should we do differently?

Happy – Sad

OPEN SPACE TECHNOLOGY

A tool that allows people to gather, exchange ideas, learn and contribute in a self-organizing way…

Open Space

Four Principles • Whoever comes is the right people • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have • Whenever it starts is the right time • When it’s over, it’s over

One Law • The Law of Two Feet Two Species • Bumblebees • Butterflies

Open Space

Open Space Technology works best when these conditions are present:

• Complex Issue, such that no single person or small group fully understands or can solve the issue

• Diversity, in terms of the skills and people required for a successful resolution

• Passion or Potential for Conflict

• Sense of Urgency

Open Space Steps

• Gather Topics – any topic related to Agile

• Voting – choose which topics to discuss

• Staging – identify leaders and locations

• Discussion – Discuss/Observer/Walk/Pollinate

• Summarize – Share Outcome – Identify Action Items

• Repeat as Necessary

Open Space - Topics

ANNOUNCEMENTS Aren’t you glad you stuck around?
