Human beings need to add aesthetic value to life’s circumstances in order to arrive at a better understanding of themselves, from ancient cave paintings to the grand designs of modern cinema.

Everything we learn through experience can be seen represented and sublimated through innumerable artistic expressions.

But the artistic faculty of humankind must be free. Art demands freedom from censorship, so that our creative powers can develop unchecked. In this way, we will ensure that all human beings continue to admire art and to learn from the meanings that artists give to the experiences of life.

At the deepest level, being human means learning new things, developing skills and perfecting them from day to day, perceiving and connecting with one’s inner self. For a human being, this realization implies enjoyment of life and a sense of fulfillment. That is why art makes us more human, and why being human is an art.

INTERVIEW WITH WIILL FERNANDES

ADVENTURES ON GRAPHICS

INTERVIEW WTH WILL FERNANDESBrazilwww.willfernandes.com.br March 2011By Nelson Medinanelson@publicistas.org© Images by Will Fernandes

How do you feel the design scene in your country?

I live in São Paulo, Brazil and it is an

urbanized city that is influenced by graffiti

and the underground culture. Brazilians

are so creative people and you can find

a lot of good professionals and artists that

make the movement grows up. After

midnight you can see the hearth of the city

wakes up and that is the time the design

starts your way.

What do you do for a day job?

I can consider my day job dynamically,

actually as much designers I prefer working

at night like a bat but sometimes I need

wake up really early to visit clients and

partners. Sometimes I am not creative as

I wish so I try to distract my mind listening

some music or ride on a longboard or even

going to shopping mall just to clear my

mind and inspire myself.

How is your studio? What could we find in your desk and walls?

My studio is like candy for children, you can

find a lot of animation toys and fun things,

in fact I collect this little toys and they are

on my desk and on the walls you can find

a lot of prints of my arts. My studio is really

fun and colorful.

What new artistic talents would you like to develop?

I really would like to painting using brush

and ink in fact in 2011 I was encouraged by

my family and friends to create prints with

my work and it was a good result.

What are the jobs for which you feel most proud of?

In fact all of my creations are special to me

but I felt really proud of my first website

that won a lot of international recognitions

and I started to be a little more notorious.

Which artists or what art movements inspired you most?

I like many kinds of art movements like

music, graffiti, skate and underground

things. Great artists to me are “Os Gemeos”

I think their art are expressive and really

serious to alerting the society to open

up their mind. But I like a lot artists like

Tarsila do Amaral, Salvador Dali, Picasso,

Leonardo da Vinci, Edvard Munch etc...

What means crossover design for you ?

Crossover design for me means the time

that I can create my crazy and colorful

ideas. I can express how I feel and the

people can think about my art and how

serious it is. A lot of my arts has a significant

means and if you look with very attention

you will find the ideas behind my art.

“I try to distract my mind listening some music or ride on a longboard ”.

“A lot of my arts has a significant means and if you look with very attention you will find the ideas behind my art”.

If you had to do the last piece of art in your life ... What would it be?

I would painting a wall with my colorful

style but not a normal wall, I would like

to painting in some place that people can

see everyday and remember that we are

all brothers and sisters and we are here not

to war but to love.

I WILL SHOW YOUEVERYTHING

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Pere Ibañez majored in film making and screenwriting. Heavily influenced by horror and sci-fi movies from the 80s, his work has developed a signature characteristic of showing nightmarish scenes and intensely emotional displays in riotous color and stark contrast. The extreme effect of his works set them apart from those of mainstream photography.

PERE IBANEZ

Spanish artist Pere Ibañez will release his new series on domestic violence

through his recently published book, The Leftlovers.

The book will be available April 10 in print through major retailers, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc., and the digital ebook version may be found on Apple’s iBookstore.

The central theme of The Leftlovers is the dark side of love: heartbreak, abuse, dependence, and obsession. Anyone, regardless of gender or orientation, can be either victim or aggressor. The collection explores both specific social events and universal tales of tragedy. Do we fear love? Should we?

How did you start in modeling?

When they needed an actress that also had a modeling look I was often booked. First for commercials and then also for clothing and other products. And a lot of my pictures for covers have been taken together with an article about my work as an actress.

Where do you think is the real beauty of a woman?

The inside the soul. And the eyes are showing the inside or the soul. So I look into the eyes to catch the beauty.

How is a typical day in your life?

There is no typical day. That is what I like. I was on theater for seven years as singer dancer and actress. And then in Germany where I had the lead in a tv prime time serial for RTL and a movie for ZDF. So very different. Theater is late evenings and film and tv very early. I had to get used to early. And then a long tour with kid creole and the coconuts. Again different day. Very different and a lot of traveling all over the world. And then to brazil and shoot an art video with pipilotti rist for the biennale Venice. Today I do commercials, radio speaks, parts in movies and my own music and my writing. When I don’t have a acting or modeling job I make music or write. a month ago I had my children novel out. And last year my cd. Cause now as a single mother I can’t take jobs on theatre. Need to be there for my daughter. First priority now.

INTERVIEW WITH MEL GAMABrazilwww.melgama.comMarch 2012By Nelson Medinanelson@publicistas.orgArtworks by © Mel Gama 2012

INTERVIEW WITH MEL GAMA

FINE ART

Can you tell us a little about yourself to help people who aren’t familiar with you, get to know you a little better?

Sure! I am Brazilian, born in Rio de Janeiro, and I am a spiritualist. I turned 50 years on February 3, 2012. I started working with photo-manipulation in 2003 when my mother got ill (she died in 2008). She loved angels, and I wanted to make my own angels to give her as a gift. Since my angels started with an extremely sexy look, they became a publication subject in a newspaper of general nationwide circulation in Brazil in 2004. In the following year, I made my first exhibition. My husband was one of my greatest supporters and began taking pictures to help me get the images used in my work to avoid having copyright problems. Also, some photographers, friends of mine who believed in my work, offered me photos of models so that I could use them.

How did you begin to combine illustration and photography with other tools like graphic design and photomontage?

Generally, my work begins with the model – her posture and beauty inspire me. I see the light used, and if it is neutral, it’s easier to work with. Based on the model, I start creating the environment around her. I try to imagine the final result of the image. Often, it results in a completely different way from what I had imagined; in others, the initial image dies in itself because if inspiration does not come, it’s no use insisting.

If you could develop your creativity in the perfect place, what would that place be like?

My favorite place is to create in my room, alone and in silence - usually, in the company of my dog ??... LOL. However, the most inspiring place that I’ve been to, and in which it would probably be very easy to

create, is a small town in England called Whitby. I’ve been there twice with my husband, and it is awesome!

What are your personal tastes in terms of food, music, clothes, books and movies?

I love eating meat in spite of loving animals. So I think I should stop doing it because I love them. New Age is my favorite style of music; Enya’s music is what I listen to when I go to the gym. I also love Freddie Mercury (Queen), Dire Straits and Pink Floyd (all from the days of my youth). During my work, I prefer listening to the sound of silence. My clothing style is informal, tending to be sexy. All of my books, without exception, focus on Allan Kardec’s Doctrine, which is widespread in Brazil despite having started in France and USA. My favorite movies are the light romantic ones. My favorite actors are Richard Gere and Sandra Bullock. To me the Oscar should go to “Our Home” – a Brazilian spiritualist movie.

Which works do you feel most proud of?

I like most of my jobs where angels appear and may, somehow, bring hope to people. The “magic” must exist - not just a photo manipulation - but I what I really love is to be able to show through my work the way I feel about the people and the world.

What new artistic talents would you like to develop?

I have projects to start drawing and later on painting. I’ve tried to use textures on top of my work but it did not work. I am completely in love with the works by Boguerau, who I identify a lot with – especially because he became well-known (and initially disliked) for making his paintings look like photographs. He is just perfect!

Can you describe the creative process through which you develop a photographic commission from the beginning to the end?

This has been more or less answered in the second question. However, to be more detailed, the steps are: 1st: choice of model; 2nd: cutting; 3rd: assembly of scenario; 4th: details of the model and her position under light and wind effects, as well as her hair; 5th: final composition and trimming.

If you had an enormous budget with which to embark upon a big project, what would it be?

I’m always involved with social work, which gives me an immense pleasure. All I get from the sales of my work and my husband’s photographs is donated to non-profit charity institutions. If I happened to have the chance to get a large sum of money, I would obviously help these institutions even more. I’d also like to open a gallery where I could give space to new talents, for free, of course.

What other artistic genres influence you?

Photography, drawing and painting are the ones that influence and inspire me.

What types of commissions or projects do you most enjoy working on?

I actually like working with anything I do with pleasure, with a job that inspires me. And I also like it when the person who requests the service accepts my view so that it is not necessary to keep repeating the same job a dozen times, usually for a fee that turns out to be insignificant.
