Innovation Center

Located at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, the Innovation Center seeks to provide a world class space for visiting middle and high school aged students to learn about STEM technology, and how it relates to the field of Formula 1 Racing.

Lacking a formal entrance to the track, this building fills that void, gradu-ally widening for incoming visitors and directing them towards the iconic amphitheater in the distance. The concept of the building is derived from the pistons in an engine, moving in and out of the crankshaft. It subtly stands as a metaphor as product of all the innovations that went into its design, while also serving as a basis for the arrangment of interior spaces.

This studio wide competition project asked us to design a headquarters for an innovative company who would open a new headquarters adjacent to Main Plaza in downtown San Antonio.

Tesla Motors is the epitome of innovation today, pushing the boundaries of electric vehicles and producing them for the public. The building’s concept derived from the idea of the production line, envisioned by the great Henry Ford whom Elon Musk cites as an idol. Thus, the building became an abstraction of this idea through the sequence of exposed steel columns that support glass masses. Responding to the context of the site, the building is split to both continue visual access from the Main Plaza and draw people into a more intimate plaza, and to enhance the intended effect of dual production lines side by side.

The Perch

This project asked us to design a place to display an object. The group decided to display nature with a structure set into arugged landscape for visitors to stop and take in the view. In this project, my role included the final renderings, furthering the refinement of the intial concept model, and the load transfer analysis.

Tom Kundig’s StudioLocation: San Antonio, TexasType: ResidentialTime: Spring 2013Professor: Shad Calvetti

This project asked us to design a private studio space for a contemporary architect on a site with historical ties to an old mill along the San Antonio Riverwalk. Having chosen Tom Kundig, many traits of his buildings are taken and re-used to create a secluded space that fits into the design language of his firm, Olsen-Kundig Architects. Common attributes of his buildings like the approach, material pallete, and articulation of building elements can be observed with the introduction of exposed steel beams, concrete masonry units, and interior cedar finishes.

This project challenged us to design an atypical solar

carport to house an electric vehicle. The premise of the

project began with research into determining the needs of

our chosen vehicle and the sizing of the array based on

our conclusions. The project challenged us to create a

concept model in 20 minutes with trash found around the

studio. Thus, the design recalls the model with its

grid-shell type structure with hexagonal cardboard pieces

that resembled solar panels. Its form cradled a triangular

block, so the structure thus encompasses a full 80’ long

driveway that hugs the vehicle.
