Anti-Semitism on the Rise on Many
American College Campuses and in Europe International Report: Part 2
Anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. surged by 57% in 2017, driven in part by an increase in such cases in schools
and college campuses according to a recent annual report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Anti-Semitic inci-
dents happened in every state with close to 2,000 cases of harassment, vandalism and physical assault being re-
corded. States with the most incidents were NY, CA, NJ, MA, FL, and PA. Rabbi Andrew Baker, AJC director of International Jewish Affairs, testified before Congress on Nov.7, 2017, that col-
leges actively promoting boycotts of the Jewish state are fostering an unfavorable environment to Jews.
In Europe, according to the 2017 Pew Research Report, the increasing population of refugees and immigrants to
Europe in recent years is becoming a significant factor for Jewish communities. The report says more than 50% of
refugees to Western Europe hold ant-Semitic views.
Sweden: Synagogues are often targeted with Molotov cocktails and there have been anti-Semitic demonstrations and
physical assaults against Sweden's 18,000 Jews.
Hungary: The 100,000 Jewish community has experienced assaults and a political atmosphere with billboards and
posters that cause concern.
Russia: Following a tragic fire at a shopping mall in Siberia that killed 64 people, anti-Semitic posts appeared on Rus-
sian social media suggesting Jews were responsible and murdered the victims to get blood for Passover matzah.
Iceland & Denmark: The right to circumcise newborn Jewish boys is under threat. Iceland has a circumcision ban and
Denmark, home to 6,000 Jews, has a petition in parliament to do the same.

ST. VINCENT ARCHABBEY Latrobe, Pa
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Excerpts: Father Edward Mazich, OSB
Envy is a particularly evil sin because by means of it we wish to deprive others without gaining any-
thing ourselves—it is the self-pity refuge of all of us when we become embittered and petty. TheYou-
Cat, a version of the Catechism which Pope Benedict XVI directed to be developed for us among young adults, says this
about envy: “Envy is sadness and annoyance at the sight of another’s well-being and the desire to acquire unjustly what
others have.” (YouCat 466).
In today’s excerpt from Numbers, we hear how a group of seventy elders of the people were about to receive the Spirit of
the Lord so that they could assist the over-worked Moses in leading and judging the people during their desert wandering.
A young member of the congregation saw that two men, Eldad and Medad, had received the very same prophetic gift of
the Spirit even though they were not among the chosen seventy. He and Joshua, Moses principal assistant, became envi-
ous and complained to Moses.
“Moses, my lord, stop them!” asking him to forbid Eldad and Medad from exercising their God-given gift. Moses wisely
reproves them: “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!” (Num 11: 28-29).
Moses understood that God will give gifts to whom he wishes to give gifts, while it is natural to wonder how the Lord
“decides” upon such outpouring of the Spirit, nonetheless we are not to be envious of others’ blessings. This theme is
taken up subtly but firmly in the gospel account of our Lord rebuking his disciples when they had tried to chase away
someone who was driving out demons in Jesus’ name, but was not of the company of the disciples. Plainly speaking, they
were envious of this man who succeeded in doing something they had failed at (see Mark 9: 14-29).
Jesus takes up the lesson of the reading from Numbers when he tells the disciples: “Do not prevent him...whoever is not
against us is for us.” (9: 39-40). He then continues to teach them that there are in fact deeds that confirm their practitio-
ners are very much “against” the Lord and “against us” who wish to be his followers. Of such a person Jesus says “it
would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” Further, he tells
his disciples that they must be willing to set aside anything that gets in the way of being “for Jesus” when he says “if your
hand/foot/eye causes you to sin, cut it off/tear it out. Be it temporal riches or the spiritual gifts that God bestows on oth-
ers, many intrinsically good things can become stumbling blocks for us when they become ends in themselves or when
envy of them takes over. Let us rejoice then in whatever gifts that come from the gracious hand of the Lord, whether they
be given to us—or to another.
LITURGY CORNER So Penance is a special gift from Our Lord to heal us and reconcile us to Him and the
Church. But each sacrament requires a specific form and matter for them to be valid.
Here is what the Catechism teaches us about the form and matter of Penance, as well as
how sacred is the duty of the Church to offer the sacrament to the faithful and protect the
confidentiality of the content of confession.
The reception of this sacrament ought to be prepared for by an examination of con-
science. The confession of sins, even from a simply human point of view, frees us and
facilitates our reconciliation with others. Confession to a priest is an essential part of the sacrament of Penance:
“All mortal sins of which penitents after a diligent self-examination are conscious must be recounted by them in
confession. According to the Church’s command, “after having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful
is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year.” Anyone who is aware of having
committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion, even if he experiences deep contrition, without hav-
ing first received sacramental absolution. Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial
sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. Indeed, the regular confession of our venial sins helps
us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of
the Spirit. Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return
stolen goods,). Simple justice requires as much. But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his
relationships with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has
caused. Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make
amends for the sin: he must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins. This satisfaction is also called
“penance.” Since Christ entrusted to his apostles the ministry of reconciliation, bishops who are their successors,
and priests, the bishops’ collaborators, continue to exercise this ministry. Priests must encourage the faithful to
come to the sacrament of Penance and must make themselves available to celebrate this sacrament each time
Christians reasonably ask for it. Given the delicacy and greatness of this ministry and the respect due to persons,
the Church declares that every priest who hears confessions is bound under very severe penalties to keep absolute
secrecy regarding the sins that his penitents have confessed to him. He can make no use of knowledge that con-
fession gives him about penitents’ lives. This secret, which admits of no exceptions, is called the “sacramental
seal,” because what the penitent has made known to the priest remains “sealed” by the sacrament. Like all the
sacraments, Penance is a liturgical action. The elements of the celebration are ordinarily these: a greeting and
blessing from the priest, reading the word of God to illuminate the conscience and elicit contrition, and an exhor-
tation to repentance; the confession, which acknowledges sins and makes them known to the priest; the imposi-
tion and acceptance of a penance; the priest’s absolution; a prayer of thanksgiving and praise and dismissal with
the blessing of the priest.
At St. Aidan’s we are blessed with a pastor who fully understands the need for confession and who makes it so
easy for anyone to see a priest and receive the grace of forgiveness. Where else have you seen a standing offer to
ring the bell at the rectory and a priest will hear your confession? It is not just Saturday afternoon. Come and be
reconciled to the love of God.
