What Nationality is That? Meaning?

• German

• Traced to Bielefeld Germany back to 1272 AD

• Area of Ubbenlo or Ubbenlohe

• “Over (or Beyond) The Pasture (vegetation)”

• Landowners were cities, nobility (knights) and farmers

• If the farmers didn’t have enough land they had to rent

more from the knights which led to serfdoms

• Ubbelohdes were “free farmers” and had the largest farm

in the area. Their symbol on the family crest and coat of

arms was a rose which was the symbol of the free

farmers.

Ubbelohdes Arrive in Wisconsin

• Carl Ubbelohde, 7th generation, left Germany (religious

persecution) and immigrated to New York. After 1 year

there, he traveled the St. Lawrence Seaway, settling in

Sheboygan

• Farmed near the Kettle Moraine forest.

• Grandfather moved to New Richmond to run the Star

Prairie cheese factory and he served as Mayor of NR.

• Father and Mother met at River Falls Teacher’s College.

After WWII moved to Colfax where he had an insurance

agency and she taught school—for 50 years.

Growing Up in Colfax, WI

• 20 mile NW of Eau Claire

• “Halfway Between The North Pole and Equator”

• Famous for the 1958 Tornado

• Two older sisters—Lisa and Mona

• Enjoyed anything outdoors

• 1996 started last year of Masters; Rotary President; Interim Hospital

• Malcolm Baldrige Award Team visit. SSM Health Care was the first

health care organization to win the Malcolm Baldrige quality award

• Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh 2000 - 2012

• 30 Unit Eden Rehabilitation Suites (short term rehab)

• 2 10-unit Green House Homes (long term skilled care)

• First in Wisconsin

• Tomah, Milwaukee, and Chicago VA facilities have now

built Green House Homes.

• After 12 years of working with Lutheran Homes of

Oshkosh and 12 years with Catholic health care at St.

Clare, I was a perfect fit for BSJ Corporation.
