Investing in this great country’s future:

a national dream unfolds.

* In memory / À la mémoire de* In memory / À la mémoire de

The Great Trail in AlbertaThis marks the connection of Alberta’s section of The Great Trail in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.

From where you are standing, you can embark upon one of the most magnificent and diverse journeys in the world. Whether heading east, west, north or south, The Great Trail – created by Trans Canada Trail and its partners – offers the natural beauty, rich history and enduring spirit of our land and its peoples.

It began as a bold dream in 1992: the idea of creating a trail that would be a gift from Canadians to Canadians. Since then, Trans Canada Trail – a not-for-profit organization – has been working with donors, partners, governments and volunteers to create an epic trail of trails offering a wide range of outdoor experiences.

Given Canada’s vastness, varied terrain and sparse population, it was a bold – almost impossible – undertaking.

Today, the Trail stretches over 24,000 kilometres, giving Canadians, now and for generations to come, a way to honour our shared history by retracing many of the routes that charted our nation’s development.

Paddlers can explore the rivers and lakes first traversed by Indigenous peoples and voyageurs; hikers and horseback riders can meander the paths travelled by the first settlers; and cyclists can pedal the former railways that powered early industry.

With hundreds of sections, The Great Trail is a trail of trails, running through urban, rural and wilderness areas, including all provincial and territorial capitals and many of our country’s provincial, territorial and national parks.

The Great Trail provides Canadians and visitors with free, accessible recreational infrastructure promoting healthy living, active transportation and an appreciation for Canada’s natural heritage. Each Trail section also serves to shine the spotlight on that region’s unique history, geographical charms and cultural heritage, making it an important asset for local tourism.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Trail is its grassroots nature. For decades, volunteer groups and communities, from the Atlantic to the Arctic and the Pacific oceans, have worked diligently toward realizing the grand dream of connecting Canadians to their land and to one another.

These dedicated Trail builders overcame the challenges of difficult terrain and scarce resources through hard work and optimism, resulting in the creation of the world’s longest recreational trail; one that connects over 15,000 communities.

Bolstering their efforts have been thousands of generous and loyal donors, countless volunteers, all levels of government, and a host of dedicated patrons, Trail Champions, board members and staff. While often invisible, their support has been critical to the development of the Trail.

On behalf of the people of Canada, Trans Canada Trail extends its heartfelt gratitude to each and every person who has helped to make this bold dream a reality. We are especially grateful for the longstanding and unwavering support of the Government of Canada.

Thank you for this wonderful gift, one that Canadians bequeath to one another, to the world and to future generations.

The Great Trail is a place to stand and reflect, a place for discovery. It’s a place steeped in Indigenous heritage that inspires respect. It’s common ground that gives birth to new dreams and destinies.

Discover it. Use it. Treasure it.

Central Alberta: Trails BetweenAccording to many archaeologists, the First Peoples originally came from Eurasia, across a land bridge and then south through ice free corridors along the mountains. Hence, West Central Alberta was part of the first trails between the old prehistoric world and a new continental frontier.

With the development of the fur trade in the 18th and early 19th centuries, new trail patterns developed. The hunters and trappers made their way back and forth from the bison-rich areas to the south and east to the string of fur trade posts along the North Saskatchewan River system to the north and west.

Over time, the central trail developed through the Red Deer area. It became known as the Blackfoot Trail or the Wolf Track. After Fort Calgary was established in 1874, a new trail, known as the Calgary-Edmonton Trail, developed along much of the Wolf Track.

After the Calgary-Edmonton Railway was constructed in 1890-1892, the old trail continued to be a major transportation corridor. It was later replaced, first by Highway 2A and then the QEII Highway, although many segments of the old C. &.E. Trail remain.

Thus, Red Deer has long been a central hub – being the mid-point between Calgary and Edmonton, but also a key link in centuries-old trail networks.

Michael Dawe—Historian

Michael Dawe—Historien

W.J.R. (Bob) Johnstone 1938-2006

Dedicated in memory of Bob Johnstone, who worked tirelessly to promote and secure trails and community infrastructure that supports active transportation, healthy lifestyles

and enhanced quality of life opportunities for all Albertans.

Bob was a board member for Alberta TrailNet Society and Central Alberta Regional Trails Society (CARTS) for many years. From 2000 to 2006, Bob concentrated his eff orts on

building support for the Trans Canada Trail and regional connectors in the communities from Penhold to Wetaskiwin, with the result of this signifi cant addition to the routing of the

Trans Canada Trail being registered.

Bob Johnstone passed away on April 16, 2006. We have lost a great friend and advocate for trails in Alberta.

He will be greatly missed.

Alberta TrailNet Society

The Great Trail / Le Grand Sentier

Alberta TrailNet SocietyFormed in 1989, Alberta TrailNet Society is Alberta’s provincial trail council, a non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to support the ongoing development of Alberta’s provincial trail network – the Wild Rose Trail System. This includes responsibility for implementing the 3,000+ km of The Great Trail in Alberta.

Recognizing the many and diverse benefits trails provide, we work in partnership with all levels of government, Trans Canada Trail, provincial, regional and local trail organizations, and other trail stakeholders to achieve several ambitious goals: connecting people and communities; supporting community, tourism and economic development; sharing and showcasing the unique natural and cultural history of our province; promoting active transportation and healthy lifestyles; and engaging Albertans in the important role of stewarding trails and natural environments.

Each trail is born and fostered within a community of local interest. Trail systems are formed from linked community and regional trails built through the effort and ingenuity of individuals, groups, organizations and communities across Alberta. We are exceedingly grateful to Alberta’s trail builders and operators, many of them volunteers, who often labour in obscurity for the public good that trails represent, and we would like to recognize the many people who over the years have supported and contributed to the development of Trans Canada Trail’s national endeavour – The Great Trail.

We would also like to thank the Government of Alberta, Trans Canada Trail and its donors, and the Government of Canada for their support and funding, without which we would not have been able to advance development of the Trail in Alberta.

www.albertatrailnet.com
