AsIwritethisletter,wearecelebratingabusyfallatSalemCollege,fullofbelovedtraditions,newacademicchallengesandblossomingfriendships.It’sparticularlygratifyingthatwe’veseena14percentincreaseintotalenrollment(traditional,grad-uateandadultstudents)andan18percentincreaseinfirst-yearresidentialstudents.Alsoexcitingisthatwenotonlyfinishedourcombinedcampaignbyraising$76million(surpassingthegoalof$75million)butalsoachievedtheannual-fundgoalfortheCollege.PleaseseetheinsertatthebackforwaysinwhichyoudemonstratedyourincrediblesupportforSalem.
Weaccomplishedotherimportantgoalsduring2008-2009,thefirstyearofourfive-yearstrategicplan.Wefocusedonthreedifferentareas--fosteringacademicdistinction;establishingapresenceasacenterforwomen’swellness;andenhancingfacilities–andIinviteyoutoreadmoreaboutthesesuccesseselsewhereinthismagazine.Hereareafewexamples: Tofosteracademicdistinction,ouroutstandingfacultymembersareimplementinganewgeneraleducationprogram,theSalemSignature;haveestablishedtheCenterforInnovativeTeachingandExcellence,openinginspring2010;andcreated23newcourses(alongwithcourse-developmentgrantsforthosefacultywhowillteachthem)forthe2009-2010academicyear. Toestablishapresenceasacenterforwomen’swellness,welaunchedinitiativesinspring2009tomotivateanewhealthierlifestyle,suchasfreeyogaclassesandfitnesstrails;developedprogramsondiversityandinclusivity;andemphasizedcampussustain-abilitythroughourexpandedrecyclingprogram.Lastbutcertainlynotleast,webeganaperiodofenhancingfacilitiesbycompletingasurveyofallclassroomfacilities,installedtechnologyequipmentinanareaoftheFineArtsCenterandtotallyrenovatedthelargestclassroomoncampus,Science102. Evenaswecelebrategoalsachieved,wearealreadyhardatworkonyeartwoofthestrategicplan.Justafewobjectivesduring2009-2010thatwewilladdressincludeexpandingthenewSalemSignatureprogramtoincludeaservice-learningcomponent;developingnewstudentprogramstoincreaseenrollment;andexpandingthewellnessandcampuscommunitydiversityinitiativesbegunlastyear. Allofthesegoalsforthecomingyearwillbepursuedwithourcorevaluesinmind.Oneofthoseis“community.”Everyday,inahundreddifferentways,itmanifestsitselfatSalemCollege.Itcanbeheardintherefectoryasstudents,facultyandstaffenjoyconver-sationoverlunch;itisvisibleontheplayingfieldsaswomenpasstheballtoeachother;anditisinthedarkofHanesauditoriumaswelightcandlestocelebratethestartofan-otheracademicyear.Itisinthemurmurofvoicescomingfromclassrooms,labsandartstudios,andthereasstudentsandIwalkeachfalluptothegraveofSalem’sfirstteacher,ElizabethOesterlein.Communitylivesinsidethelibraryreadingroom,wherethesoundofsoftconversationmingleswiththequietclickingofkeyboards.AnditiscelebratedonourannualCelebrationofAcademicExcellenceday,whenclassesarecancelledandseniorspresenttheiroutstandingresearchpapers. Salem’ssenseofcommunityispresentinthewiderworld,too,asourstudentscompleteJanTerminternships,takecoursesabroadandentertheworkforceorgradu-ateschool,wheretheywillbeleadersandscholars.Andcommunityshinesthroughourincrediblealumnae,whosupporttheCollegeinsomanywaysandarerolemodelsforourstudents. AtSalemCollege,communityhasnevermeantuniformity.Sinceourfoundingin1772,eachstudenthasbroughtuniquegiftstoourcommunity.Butthebondsofwhatwecallcommunityor“sisterhood”connecteveryoneacrossdifferences.Thosebondsprovidesupportasstudentsofallagessetoutupontheirintellectuallifejourney,secureintheknowledgethatallindividualgiftswillbecelebratedandallvoiceswillbeheardinthiscommunityweknowasSalem.

College’sClassof1962beforegraduatingwithabachelor’sdegree
magnacumlaudefromWesternCarolinaUniversity.

OxfordandScotlandduringJuly,which
focusedonthechangesinU.S./European
economicstandingandtherelativegains
oftheBRICs–Brazil,Russia,Indiaand
China.Theprogramwasdesignedbyour
SalemfacultyanddirectedthroughSt.
Peter’sCollege,OxfordUniversity,with
participationbystudentsfromShenadoah
Universitybusinessschool.Thetwo-and-
a-halfweeksessioninresidenceatOxford
featuredanimpressivelistofguestspeak-
ers.Studentsengagedinaformaldebate
onthelikelywinnersinglobaleconomic
leadershipoverthenext30years.
Inadditiontotheseclassroomdiscus-
sions,ourstudentstookfulladvantageof
twoweekendtripstoLondonandCardiff
(Wales),wherethecultureandhistory
providedavividbackdropforourstudies.

andexceptionallycordialpeople.
Ourfirstadventureswereinand
aroundBeijing,walkingthroughTianan-
menSquare,theImperialPalaceand
theTempleofHeavenaccompaniedby
excellentverbalportraitsofthehistoryand
traditionsofancientChina.Onaverycold
morningwemadetheclimbuptheBadalin
section(1500AD)oftheGreatWall,not-
ingthebitterwindsthatgreetedthesenti-
nelswhooncekeptwatchforinvadersfrom
thenorth.Toursofasteelmill,aHutong
villageandtheOlympicParkwereamong
severalvenueswhichhelpedtogaugethe
extentof“westernization”inBeijing.
The4000km,47hourjourneyby
traintoLhasa,Tibetprovidedexceptional
scenerythroughfarmland,desertand
mountains.Formostofthestudentsthis
wastheirfirstlongtrainride,andinclose
quartersandthehighestaltitudeforany
passengertrainintheworld(16,600ft).
InLhasa,theimpressiveBuddhisttemples
andmonasteriesweresetagainstarapidly
expandingbusinessdistrict.
OnehighlightofChengduwasthe
visittothemarketingandeditorialoffices
oftheWesternChinaDailynewspaper.The
bustlingenterpriseofhigh-techmanufac-
turingandtherichagriculturalbaseofthe
regionwereallondisplayinprintandon
ourtravelsintheregion.
HongKongbroughtusforwardin
architecturaltime,butthefoodandstreet
vendorsonNathanRoadtolduswewere
clearlyensconcedinanotherera.TheChi-
neseNewYearfireworksoverHongKong
Salem College business and economics students and professors visited the summer palace of the dalai Lama, in Lhasa, Tibet during January 2009. Therearemorethan370roomsinsideitspremises.Itiscalledasummer
palacebecauseaftertheseventhLama,hissuccessorsvisitedhereduringsummerstoholdreligiousandgovernment-relatedactivities.

VisitstotheBMWMiniCoopermanu-
facturingplantandtheIronbridgeWorld
HeritagesiteinTelfordsetthebookends
forthelegacyoftheIndustrialRevolution,
whichbeganinpartwiththeperfection
ofironsmeltingbyAbrahamDarbyinthe
early1700salongtheSevernRiver.
FollowingourOxfordstay,theSalem
group–includingProfessorDickJohe
–tookthetraintoGlasgow,Scotland.We
joinedinScotland’shomecomingcel-
ebration,inspiredbythe250thbirthday
ofRobertBurns,byvisitingtheBurns
NationalHeritageSiteandattendingthe
GatheringoftheClansinEdinburgh.The
NewLanarkWorldHeritageSiteprovided
aglimpseofearlytextilemanufacturing
andtheambitiousutopianvillagefor
workersestablishedbyRobertOwen.The
coldpassagesofCardiff’sStirlingCastle
stirredvisionsofScotland’sproudinde-
pendenceinbygonetimes.

Thestudy-abroadtriptoMexicodur-
ingtheJanuaryTermof2009wasagreat
immersionexperience!Salemstudentshad
averyproductivethreeweeksexpanding
theirknowledgeofSpanishandlearning
aboutMexicanculture.
Theacademiccomponentatthe
UniversidadInternacionalwasintensebut
moststudentsexcelledintheirgrammar,
conversationandcultureclasses.Despite
themanydailyclasshours,wemanaged
toenjoymanyextracurricularactivities
includingLatindance,popularsongs,
andsoccer.Ontheweekendswewenton
excursionstoavarietyofplacesofinterest
suchastheAztecpyramidsofTeotihua-
can,NationalMuseumofAnthropology,
silvercityofTaxco,Acapulco,thenational
palaceandthecathedralofMexico.We
alsoattendedabreathtakingperformance
bytheNationalFolkloricBalletCompany
andalightandsoundshowatthearcheo-
logicalsiteofXochicalco.
Whilewewereoverthere,some
Salemstudentseventooktheopportunity
toexploretheirprofessionalfieldand
didacomparativestudy.Theinteraction
withhostfamiliesandlocalfriendsalso
turnedouttobeveryrewarding.Manyof
usestablishedstrongfriendships,andthe
wonderfulthingisthatwehavebeenstay-
ingintouchwiththemusingthetarget
language!

importantly,Ilearnedalotaboutmyself.
Idiscoveredanewkindofindependence
afterlivingonmyowninaforeigncity.
BeingaSalemwomanhasmademereal-
izehowtrulycapableIamoftakingon
newandunfamiliarchallenges.Studying
abroadwascertainlyagreataccenttomy
collegeexperience,andIthinkitisan
invaluableassettoaperson’seducation.

inabigcity,Ilovedthefoodandlearning
thedancesandIlovedthethreefamilies
Istayedwiththroughoutmytravels.On
theotherhand,figuringouthowtoget
aroundandadjustingtonewcultural

ture,wordsandconventionswasrecordedandanalyzed.”
ThesabbaticaltimeallowedBakertimetoidentifysome
interestingcommonthreadsamongthebooks.“Onepatternthat
hasemergedisthatthemostcreativeuseofwriters’craftstendsto
occurwithintextswheretheauthorandillustratorarethesame
person,”Bakerexplains.“Also,thereappearstobeasynergismbe-
tweentheauthor’scraftsandillustrationsthatisusuallynotpres-
entintextswheretheauthorandillustratorareseparatepersons.”
Hesaysthatsofarthetwotextswiththemostinterestingusesof
writer’scraftareSendak’sWhere the Wild Things Are,andHenkes’
Kitten’s First Full Moon.
Bakersayshissabbaticalfindingswillproviderichfodderfor
discussioninclassesthisyear.“Wediscusscraftintheundergrad-
uateandgraduateclassesthatfocusonteachingprocesswriting.
ThetopicisalsodiscussedinChildren’sLiteratureclasses,”he
says.“Thesabbaticalprovidedtimefordetailedanalysesanddeep-
erreflectiononthesebooks.Thisinformationgreatlyenrichesthe
discussionswithintheseclasses.”

toresearchingCaribbeanwomenwriters,oneofmypassions,”
Oczkowiczsays.Tobeginthatprocess,shepresentedapaperon
authorJamaicaKincaidatthe11thInternationalConferenceofthe
AssociationofCaribbeanWomenWritersandScholarsinGrenada
inMay2008.
Shealsobecame“reengaged”withanotherauthorwhohad
longfascinatedher:ThorntonWilder,writerofOur Town,The
Bridge Of San Luis Reyandothernotableworks,someofwhich
OczkowiczhadpreviouslytaughtatSalem.Shebecameassistant
editoroftheInternationalThorntonWilderSocietyNewsletter;
thenbegantoweaveherownresearchintoWilderwiththatof
otherWilderscholarsandfans.AmongthosewereSalem’sown

tothecommunityaspartofSalemCollege’sfallrosterofcultural

Anotherprojectthattookwingduringhersabbaticalinvolved
translatingintoPolishtheperformancetextcreatedbyPamela
HowlandofWakeForestUniversitytocommemoratethe200th
anniversaryofthecomposerFredricChopin’sbirth.Tocriticalac-
claim,Howlandperformedherprogram“RememberingFrederic:
AMusicalConversationBetweenChopinandGeorgeSand,”in
Warsaw,Poland,inAugust,andshewillbringittoSalemaudi-
encesonFebruary,252010.

Term2009.Thedeanofstudents’office
sponsoredtheretreatwhichfeatured
activitiesdesignedtoraisemulticultural
awarenessandcelebratetheindividual
differenceswhichcompriseourrichly
diversecampuscommunity.Studentswho
attendedtheretreatrecommendedthat
incomingstudentswouldbenefitfrom
havingasimilarretreatfortheirentire
class,withtheresultthattheentering

Every10yearsSalemmustgothroughareaccredidation
process.2010isouryear.Weallknowthatweareanexcellent
liberalartscollegethatproducesoutstandinggraduateswhohave
receivedthefinesteducationthatisavailable,butwehavetoshow
thattoouraccreditationagency,SouthernAssociationofColleges
andSchools(orSACS).
Fortunately,wehavegreatfaculty,staffandadministrators
whoareinchargeofthealmostendlesspaperworkneededfor
goodaccountability.Ourreaccreditationagencyalsorequiresthat
thefacultyleadacampuswideinitiativethatwillenhancestudent
learning.ThisprocessisknownastheQualityEnhancement
Plan,orQEPforshort.
ThefirstgoalfortheQEPPlanningCommitteewasto
identifyatopicfortheplan.Thiswasperhapsthehardesttaskas
ithadtobeinformedbyourentirecommunityandgrounded
inSalem’smissionandvalues.Wegatheredtopicsfromstaff
andfacultyandsurveyedeverymajorinterestgrouponandoff
campus.Infact,theresponsefromthealumnaewassowonderful
thatonly30minutesafterthesurveylinkwassentout,wehadto
upgradetothenextbusinesslevelonSurveyMonkey.Thanksto
allofyouforyourresponses,theywereincrediblyhelpfultoour
processofselectingourfocus:TheSeniorInterdisciplinarySemi-
nar.Thiswillbecomethecapstonecourseforournewgeneral
educationprogram,renamedTheSalemSignature.
TheoverallgoalfortheSeniorInterdisciplinarySeminaris
toenhancestudentlearningthroughaninterdisciplinaryse-
niorcoursethatempowersstudentstoevaluate,appreciateand
integratemultipleperspectivesastheypreparetobeagentsof
change.Withtheadventofournewgeneraleducationprogram,
weseethiscourseasbeingthemissingpieceofthepuzzlethatties
togetherthebreadthofourgeneraleducation,thedepthofthe
majorandtheco-curricularactivitiesthatSalemCollegeoffers.
Thiscoursecentersoninterdisciplinaryworkwhichisoneofthe
definingelementsofSalem’svisionandgoals.Ourvisionstate-
mentoutlinesfourproposedstudentoutcomessupportingthe
missionofthecollege:Salemgraduateswillbeableto1)conduct
andeffectivelycommunicatesignificantscholarly,professional,or
creativework;2)useinterdisciplinaryapproachestofacilitatein-
novativethought;3)applyknowledgeandtechnologieseffectively
inmultipleexperientiallearningmodes;and4)engageinsocially
responsiblechange.
Preparingtobeglobalcitizensrequiresthatourstudents
understandissuesandknowhowtosolvecomplexproblemsin
multipleways.Whileunderstandingthedepthofagivenfieldis

ofbestpracticesforsenior-yearexperiencesinotherinstitutions.
Salem’sQEP,theSeniorInterdisciplinarySeminar,willnot
replacetheseniorseminarorcapstonecourseinthemajor.This
coursewillbeinadditiontotherequirementsforthemajor.
Infact,wehopetomakesurethateachsectionoftheSenior
InterdisciplinarySeminarwillhavestudentsfromasdiverse
backgroundsaspossible.Basedontheirfeedback,ourstudentsare
excitedtohavecourseswithstudentsoutsidetheirmajorintheir
senioryear.Thiscoursewillalsogiveusaanopportunitytowork
withthegreaterWinston-Salemcommunityinnewandinterest-

2010-2011academicyear.Beonthelook-

Salem.SincemyinductionattheMay
meetingoftheAlumnaeBoard,Ihave
spenttimereflectingonmyyearsat
Salem,readingalittleofSalem’sremark-
ablehistoryandthinkingabouthowwe,asalumnae,canensurea
brightfutureforthecollegethathasgivenussomuch.
Recently,Ihadtheopportunitytoenjoydinnerwithcurrent
Salemstudentleadersandalumnaeboardmembers.Whenasked
tosummarizeinonesentencewhattheywouldsaytoahigh-
schoolstudentaboutSalem,oneFleerstudentcommented,“If
youwantsomethingmorethananordinarycollegeexperience,if
youwantauniquecollegeexperience,chooseSalem!”Atradition-
alstudentanswered,“YoucometoSalemtobecomeawomanbut
alsotofullyunderstandwhatitmeanstobeawoman,andwhen
youleaveyouwillbemorepreparedbecauseyouareawoman
whoknowswhatyouwantandyouhavethetoolsnecessaryto
beawell-roundedwomanintoday’sworld.”Analumnasaid,“At
Salem,youwillfindyoursisters.”Theseresponsesinspireme!
Althoughthegroupwasdiverseintermsofageandethnicity,itis
clearthatweshareacommonexperience—theSalemtradition.
In1772,JohnA.Comeniusmadethecaseforthefounding
ofSalem.Hesaid,“Whyshouldwemerelydismiss[women]with
theABCsanddrivethemawayfrombooks:Areweafraidoftheir
meddling?Themoreweintroducethemtomentaloccupations,
thelesstimetheywillfindformeddling,whichcomesfromemp-
tinessofmind.”Well,ourfoundingMoravianswouldbepleased
toknowthatSalemwomenhavespentthelast237yearsdoing
muchmorethanmere“meddling.”
Salemalumnaearecurrently8000-plusstrongandhave
aglobalpresence.Weareteachers,doctors,scientists,lawyers,
bankers,writers,artists,politicians,musicians,actresses,non-
profitmanagers,businessowners,homemakers,community
leadersandmuch,muchmore.OurSalemexperiences,while
differentinmanyways,havehelpedtoshapewhoweare.Because
thisisso,wehavearesponsibilitytodowhatwecantoensureits
future.
You’llbepleasedtoknowthatthereismuchgoodnews
tocelebrateatSalem.Traditionalstudentadmissionsareup18
percent,andthestudentnumbersintheFleerCenterandgradu-
ateprogramsareup,aswell.Inaddition,Salemmetitsannual
fundgoalfor2008-2009.However,giventhecurrenteconomic
climate,thisisnotenough.
Manyofyouareawareoftherecentfinancialdifficultiesof
collegesanduniversitiesthroughoutourcountry.Theseinci-
dencesareadisturbingtrend,andSalemisnotimmunetothese
challenges.Currently,theadministration,facultyandstaffarere-
viewingeveryaspectofthecollegetoensurethatSalemcontinues
tothriveandremainstruetoitsmission.
Tocontinuetocompeteinthesechallengingeconomictimes,
Salemneedsitsalumnaetobemoreinvolved.Whatdoesthis
mean?Itmeans:
–connectingwithclassmates;
–attendingandhostingalumnaeeventsinyourarea;

educationhasbeenadoptedbySalem
astheCollegeseekstocreateaculture

Beginningin2008,wellnesswasa
majorfocuswithintheCollege’sfive-
yearstrategicplan,andthefirststeps
weretakentofocusonwellness.A
wellnesscommitteemadeupoffaculty,
staffandstudentswasformedtostudy
existingwellnessprogramsandmake
recommendations.Someearlysteps
wereputintoplace,suchasrequiringall
studentstohavehealthinsurance,and
providingthem(andfacultyandstaff)
withane-magazinecalled“StudentHealth
101.”Students’parentsaresenttheir
ownversion.Studentswerealsoaskedto
completetheACHAstudenthealthsurvey
inspring2009inordertohelpSalem
knowthepredominanthealth,safetyand
wellnessconcernsoncampus.
Thispastspring,afitnesschallenge
waslaunchedtorewardfaculty,staffand
studentswhodidsomeformofphysical
activity30minutesadayforamonth.
