Few towns can boast such an attractive, large bayas Santander, the largest in the north of Spain.By invitation, it belongs to the select Club of theMost Attractive Bays in the World, it being theonly Spanish bay to be included in thisorganization. Constantly changing and alwaysbeautiful, the light and wind predominateits wide array of contrasts. The to-ing andfro-ing of a host of fishing and sports vesselsthat ply the bay, especially in the sunnydays of summer.

Selecting a town to be the headquarters for acongress is no easy task. Many options are openalthough there are few distinguishing factorsbetween one town and another. Even so, thereare some important points to be taken intoaccount when it comes to making a choice inorder to avoid making a mistake: the size of thetown, the specific facilities available, the hoteland communications infrastructure and theability to split the facilities for parallel events.As regards the size of the town, there is nodoubt about the fact that a small town suchas Santander has good, varied services, iscomfortable for the organizer and conferenceparticipant alike; as far as specific facilities areconcerned for holding the event, Santander hasoffers exceptionally attractive, well locatedscenarios such as the Royal Palace of LaMagdalena, the Festival Hall and the Exhibition

Hall, on a par with the best buildings in thetowns most called for. As for hotel capacity,Santander is an elegant, quality tourist town,drawing together a considerably sized hotelcapacity to deal with such large scale events;communications in the Santander area havebeen substantially improved, especially withthe rest of Spain and in air transport, with directlines to a dozen towns and cities. Finally, thealternatives for enjoying free time at thecongress are numerous. Cantabria is a regionwith an extremely wide range of activities justone hour away by car (golf, watersports, skiing,spa tourism, natural caves and cave painting,hiking, visiting the Liébana area, cable railwayin the Europa Peaks, the Cabárceno Park,Artesantander…). All these good reasons andmany more besides, such as its exceptionallyattractive countryside, beaches and walks rank

Santander as one of the towns most preferredby organizers and participants. Over 500 eventsheld each year back this statement. Santandercurrently has some 15,000 rooms shared outamong some 15 hotel establishments, forcongresses being held at the same time.As noted, this is an interesting offer forcongresses, designed to meet the requirementsof a professional market looking for excellencein the choice and smooth running of the eventto make it an unforgettable one.

Tradition and culture, words that blend and live

together. Out of tradition grows culture, and from that,

a people’s idiosyncrasy. The richer their tradition, the

richer their culture. This gave rise to man’s artistic

expression, some 15,000 years ago, in the Altamira Cave.

Although art has evolved, its principles are found

here. The same occurs with other things

particular to us such as the hill land cottage,

bowling, boat racing, rebec or other autochthonous

festivities of ours. Grass roots or cultured

expressions echoing Cantabria’s essence, a land of

restrained yet brilliant people, calm but decided,

cautious although tenacious.

Delicious. It certainly is a delight to enjoy the texture

and taste of a Pas Valley sponge cake made with real

butter, a delicacy as well known as it has been

imitated. We could call this a fantastic trip to

the gourmet’s paradise. While some regions

compete to rank in the place of honour on the

Olympus of culinary skill, for decades endowed

with the best meats and fish, and milk to make

its savoury desserts and cheeses. Cantabria has

been an authentic larder, and now is a kitchen, an

interesting, imaginative cuisine which, day by day,

is made ready by its master chefs on the ovens spread

out across its coastal and rural dominions.
