Modernization Readiness
• PC SAS• Server SAS• Grid SAS
Deployment Models for SAS
• Compute resources• Security and metadata• SAS “assets” (files and programs)• Business applications written in or integrated with SAS• Supporting infrastructure (Citrix, storage tier)• Potentially, SAS solutions (Visual Analytics/Statistics, Business Intelligence)• Users – people using SAS and/or systems built in SAS for business operations
Systems Landscape for SAS

Why Modernize? Changing business needs Changing licensing Introduce new technologies to
the business Simplify licensing Ability for IT and business to
dynamically manage infrastructure
Optimize utilization of hardware and software assets

Modernization Methodology
Assess Design Implement Migrate Adopt Run
Manage, Execute, and Enable Change
Support - Center of Excellence
Proven methodology and approach Implementation is not a serial activity Implementation is not adoption Change management is a vital component On-going alignment of performance to business demands
d-Wise has deep technical expertise in SAS and solutions architecture, but more importantly we enable successful adoption

Key ChallengesAligning the organization on a SAS licensing and deployment strategy requires a coordinated effort
Design should accommodate today’s operational needs and tomorrow’s agility needs
Execution and change management should minimize business disruption and enable enterprise adoption
Business objectives should align to best practices
The risk profile of modernization should inform planning and execution

Success Modernizing SAS
Plan accordingly that implementation and adoption are separate efforts.
Risk in a grid implementation is highest during design and migration.
All work streams should have shared purpose and understanding of current state and future state.
Grid is configurable and flexible, decisions that prioritize simplicity reduce risk in implementation
and operation.
Migration cannot start too early, but it can start too late. Start early.

Success MigratingAdoption timing is a 3 dimensional problem: technology,
people, and projects (or studies).
Migration dependency analysis must include code/data review.
Prioritize an early effort to identify known and unknown technical challenges and mitigation strategies.
Pilot exercises are a potent way to surface unknowns and creates internal advocacy and peer-to-peer support
capabilities.
Project lifecycle (proximity to completion, ability to limit future work in legacy platforms) are strong determinants of adoption
timing.
Adoption approach should provide flexibility in the transition and steer around avoidable risk to business
operations/timelines.

SAS License OptionsCore-Based Server-Based PC-Based
What is this called? Grid Server Desktop
Deploys to Any # of cores A specific server or collection of specific servers A # of desktops
AgilityMove cores fluidly across
enterprise; allocate capacity on demand;
provision resource queues Move users between servers Not agile
High-Availability Built-in from ground up Accomplished via redundancy and/or virtualization
Having spare laptops and/or lab licenses
ScalabilityEasy to scale up or out;
pricing/terms for additional cores pre-negotiated
Add another server, renegotiate license
Buy another bundle of PC licenses
