Following numerous requests by the Catholicdevotees of Negombo, the Archdiocese ofColombo has decided to take the Holy Relic of St.Anthony to Negombo, one of country’s predomi-nantly Roman Catholic areas, popularly known as‘Little Rome’.

The Holy Relic of St. Anthony arrived in SriLanka on the 8th of March and was taken to alldioceses of the country including Jaffna.

“We got numerous requests from the devoteesin Negombo and then it was decided to take theHoly Relic to Negombo for a brief while,” Rev. Fr.Sriyananda Fernando, Director, SocialCommunications of the Colombo Archdiocesetold ‘The Island’ yesterday.

The Sacred Relic will be taken to Negombotomorrow through Grand Street, Sea Street,Muruthana and St. Anthony’s Church inDalupotha.

Meanwhile, the Holy Relic was taken toLiyanagemulla from St. Anthony’sChurch in Kochchikade last eveningafter Holy Mass presided over by HisGrace Archbishop Emeritus Most Rev.Dr. Oswald Gomis.

The Sacred Relic leaves Sri Lanka onthe 23rd of March.

March 21, 2010: Another asy-lum seeker boat with more than90 passengers on board hasbeen intercepted in Australianwaters, stirring concerns theChristmas Island immigrationdetention centre could soon befull.

The suspected illegal entryvessel was found northwest ofChristmas Island shortly after11pm (AEDT) last night.

Initial estimates suggest 92passengers were on board,Home Affairs Minister BrendanO’Connor said in a statementtoday.

The interception takes to 25the tally of unauthorised asy-lum seeker vessels that haveentered Australian waters in2010.

Opposition immigrationspokesman Scott Morrison saidthe addition of 92 asylum seek-ers - the second largest intakethis year - to Christmas Islandmeant the detention centrewould have only 50 beds left.

“If we have another boatarrive in the next 24 hours, which is quite possible, then it’s

full,” he told AAP today.“We´ll very, very soon be at

the stage where they’ll be trans-ferring people to the mainland.”

The federal government haspreviously raised the option ofhousing asylum seekers at a

550-bed facility in DarwinifChristmas Island’s capacity wasexhausted.

But Mr. Morrison said thecoalition, which supports the

reintroduction of temporaryprotection visas, would beopposed to asylum seekersbeing brought to the Australianmainland.

The government needed toconsider other options, liketemporarily housing surplusasylum seekers on ships used toaccommodate oil rig workers.

“I’m not suggesting this iscoalition policy. They areoptions,” he said.

Mr. O’Connor said the feder-al government was workingclosely with Australia’s region-al neighbours to tackle theissue of people smuggling.

“People smugglers seek outand exploit vulnerable personswho, having faced uncertainty, conflict and violence, pursuestability and safety,” he said.

The asylum seekers will betransferred to Christmas Islandfor security, identity and healthchecks, and their reasons fortravel will be established.

DEATH

by ShamindraFerdinando

SLFP Gen. Secretary,MaithripalaSirisena, is confi-

dent that the SLFP-ledruling coalition couldsecure four out of fiveseats in the Polonnaruwaelectoral district.According to the veteranpolitician, the Oppositionis in disarray in the dis-trict.

Speaking to TheIsland at the MahaweliCentre last Wednesday(March 17), he said theUPFA could win five ofthe eight seats in theneighbouringAnuradhapura district.Minister Sirisena saidthat the JVP was unlikelyto win even a single seatin the North CentralProvince at the forthcom-ing parliamentary elec-tion.

At the April 2004 par-liamentary election, theJVP contested on theUPFA ticket and won 36seats. The Marxist partyalso secured threeNational List slots, whichmade it the third largestpolitical party in thesixth parliament. TheJVP is contesting theApril 8 election on theDNA (DemocraticNational Alliance) ticket.

The NC Province com-prises Polonnaruwa and

Anuradhapura districts. At the last parliamentaryelection, the UPFA wonthree out of five seats.Maithripala Sirisena, hisbrother-in-law, SiripalaGamlath, and S. K.Subasinghe, (JVP nomi-nee), were elected, whileEarl Gunasekera and C.A Suriyaarachchisecured the remainingslots for the UNP. The lat-ter subsequentlyswitched his allegiance toPresident MahindaRajapaksa, along withalmost 20 other UNPers.

But JVPerSubasinghe did not joinWimal Weerawansa’srevolt (over two yearsago), forcing the NationalFreedom Front (NFF) tofield Raja RanjithGunaratne in thePolonnaruwa district tocontest the April 8 elec-tion. Had Subasinghesided with the rebelgroup, he would havebeen Weerawansa’s nomi-nee in Polonnaruwa.Subasinghe leads DNAcandidates inPolonnaruwa.

Like in the SouthernProvince, where all sevenJVPers, elected on theUPFA ticket at the lastparliamentary election, remained loyal toSomawansaAmarasinghe,Subasinghe and two oth-ers, K. D. Lal Kantha andRanaweera Pathirana, elected fromAnuradhapura, hadrejected Weerawansa’sovertures.

Both Lal Kantha andRanaweera Pathirana arein the fray inAnuradhapura, alongwith former JVP/UPFANational List MP,Wasantha Samarasinghe.Although the governmentbelieved that Lal Kantha

would switch his alle-giance to PresidentRajapaksa in the run-upto the January 26 presi-dential election, the JVPheavyweight remainedwith the party. Pathiranais credited with revealingwaste, corruption andirregularities in parlia-ment. A query raised byhim in parliament, over ayear ago, revealed about40 ruling party politi-cians receiving a Rs.100,000 housingallowance.

WasanthaSamarasinghe quit hisNational List seat to con-test the last election to theNorth Central ProvincialCouncil. Although he suc-ceeded, the party lost theNational List vacancy toformer LTTE commander,VinayagamoorthyMuralidaran aliasKaruna, who subsequent-ly received SLFP member-ship. Karuna, now a Vice-President of the SLFP, ison the UPFA NationalList.

At the last election, theUPFA took five out ofeight seats inAnuradhapura. While LalKantha and RanaweeraPathirana secured two outof five UPFA seats,Duminda Dissanayake(North Central ProvinceChief Minister’s son), S.M. Chandrasena and TissaKaraliyedde secured theremaining seats.

The UNP had to be sat-

isfied with three seats (P.Harrison, ChandaniJayasinghe and W. B.Ekanayake). Ekanayakesubsequently crossed overto the UPFA.

JVP nomineeWeerakumaraDissanayake, who enteredparliament at the last elec-tion on the UPFA ticketfrom the Puttalam elec-torate, is Weerawansa’snominee inAnuradhapura.

Both the JVP and NFFwill not find it easy in theNorth Central Province, where the ruling partystands to secure a lion’sshare of the seats.

The assassination ofOpposition leader of theNCP, Maj. Gen. JanakaPerera, over a year ago, weakened the UNP to agreat extent. Had he sur-vived the LTTE attempt, the UNP would have beenin a far stronger position, though he could not havethwarted a governmentvictory.

The armed forces’ tri-umph over the LTTE lastMay will give a megaboost to the government’scampaign in the NCP,whereas the Opposition isstruggling to save its face.A split in the Oppositionvote, due to the UNP andJVP contesting the poll ontheir own, will be to theadvantage of the govern-ment, particularly in theNCP.

Political sources saidthat the Opposition cam-paign was in a mess due tothe lethargic attitude ofthe leaders. AlthoughMaithripala Sirisena hasensured a peaceful envi-ronment in Polonnaruwa, the situation inAnuradhapura is deterio-rating with political thugsgoing to the extent of tar-geting the police.

JVP faces heavy defeat, NFF unlikely to impress

UPFA set to winNCP comfortably
