1) About Nottinghamshire
Hospice
Nottinghamshire Hospice supports local families when someone
in that family has a serious illness that cannot be cured. We work
with the whole family, to help meet not only the medical care and support needs of the patient but also the practical,
emotional and social needs of everyone in the family, both during the illness and in
bereavement.
We provide some of our services in our Hospice on Woodborough Road and we also
care for people in their own home, especially when they would otherwise have to go into
hospital. Our Hospice at Home service can enable people to stay at home for as long as
possible and die at home, if that is what they have chosen to do.
Why we would like you to get involved
We want to help as many local families as we can and we need to raise over
£4 million every year to do that. We would like your school to be part of making a difference to those families.
2) How it will benefit your school
Taking part in one of Nottinghamshire
Hospice’s fundraising challenges or putting
on your own fundraising challenge as a
school will help students to develop new
skills in a variety of different areas such as
communication, teamwork, negotiation,
business planning, networking, confidence,
time management and many more. It’s also
fun!
A number of the challenges will also be able
to work alongside your school’s curriculum.
Nottinghamshire Hospice also offers a number of volunteering opportunities that
students can get involved in and use towards their Duke of Edinburgh award.

3) How to get involved
This section has been broken down into different schools age
ranges. However, you are welcome to take part in any activity
mentioned if you feel this is suitable for your school.
3.1: Infant and Junior Schools
Care for a Bear
Children are asked to take care of one of our
special bears, give them a name, design them some
clothes and look after them for a whole week to raise
sponsorship for Nottinghamshire Hospice.
Undertake a Personal Challenge
We’d like to encourage whole classes to decide on
their own challenge and get sponsored for its completion, for example a sponsored
silence or doing the most bunny hops they can in one minute. We’d love to hear
what ideas the children have for their challenge and can make it easy to manage
their sponsor money by providing special envelopes.
Take the Christmas and Easter Retail Challenge
We will provide you with Christmas and Easter merchandise to sell through your
school and a prize will be given to the team, class or school that runs the most
successful project.
3.2: Primary Schools:
Be a Nottinghamshire Hospice Hero
Pupils are asked to design their own superhero and
either get sponsored to do five things which make
them that superhero, or donate pocket money for each
task they complete, for example helping others, doing
more than their usual jobs at home.
Empty and Refill a Smarties Tube
Nottinghamshire Hospice will provide children with a tube of Smarties—yum! Once
the children have finished all the Smarties, their task is to fill the tube with 20ps to
the top and then donate it to us.
Penny Picture
Pupils are asked to draw a picture on the floor and then fill it in using loose change.

3.3: Secondary Schools:
Junior Dragons Challenge
This project is designed to help students to develop skills in key areas of business
management, project management, delegation, budgeting, negotiation, networking,
marketing, teamwork, relationship management and many more. The idea is that a
team of students will be given up to £50 to invest in products or materials to set up
and run a money-making enterprise, for example the ingredients to make cakes to
sell at school.
They will be asked to return the original stake plus any
profits they make as a donation to Nottinghamshire
Hospice. All participating teams will be entered for our
Enterprising Learners Prize which will be given out at our
annual awards ceremony. Students will be given a brief
and objectives to achieve during this challenge, including
identifying and assessing their business environment and
projecting how they will achieve a profit, all of which can
go towards their learning outcomes across several topics.

The Creative Challenge
Teams will be invited to help us save money or staff time by helping us source free
raffle prizes for an event, develop a product for us or help us promote a product or
event.
Each team will receive:
A briefing and information pack
The opportunity to come to the Hospice and make a presentation on their
findings and learning from the project to senior managers and ambassadors,
and receive feedback.
Automatic entry for consideration for the team prize
The chance to be considered for our annual Hospice Hero prize
Promotion via our website and social media
Dress Down Day
Students dress down and wear their own clothes. This could be a themed dress down
day, maybe at Christmas and all dress as Santa, have a pyjama party, have a crazy
hats day . . . the opportunities are endless!

4) Planning and organising
If you choose to run your own event it is really important to be
organised - start by writing a list of things that need to be done.
Top ten tips to planning:
7 Richard Owen, Community and Challenges Fundraiser
E: richardowen@nottshospice.org T: 0115 910 1008
1. Decide what you’re going to do - Use our A-Z guide on page 10 for
inspiration.
2. Let us know - Please let the fundraising team know so we can offer
you the right support.
3. Choose a date and time - Check that this doesn’t clash with any
major events e.g. Red Nose Day and give yourself enough time to plan.
4. Set deadlines and stick to them - Helping you to keep on track for a
successful fundraising event. Make sure you are sending out invitations
a minimum of 4 weeks in advance.
5. Think about a budget - What will it cost? Can you get sponsorship?
6. Pick a venue that is suitable - Tell the venue that it is a charity
event. Has it got the correct facilities e.g. disabled toilet, suitable
lighting, correct number for your projected capacity, catering.
7. Ask for help - Delegate tasks among team members, family and other
friends.
8. What equipment do you need - Work out what equipment you may
need and think about how you will secure it for your event and how it
will get to your venue.
9. Don’t rely on the weather - Think of a contingency plan in case the
weather is not suitable for your event.
10. Do you want a member of the Hospice team to attend - If you
would like a representative from the Hospice we would appreciate as
much notice as possible. We will always do our best to attend - please
note we have so many similar requests we cannot guarantee that we
will definitely be to attend.

Recycle your old mobile phones, empty laser printer and
inkjet printer cartridges
Nottinghamshire Hospice have teamed up with leading electronic waste management
company Clover Environmental Solutions to help turn these items that would otherwise be destined for landfill into valuable funds for Nottinghamshire Hospice,
whilst also protecting the environment.
So if you have old mobile phones or empty laser printer and inkjet printer
cartridges then don't throw them out. Clover Environmental Solutions will
supply a collection point box for your phones and cartridges - why not encourage
pupils and their families to help by adding theirs. When it is full, all you have to do
is call the number on the box to arrange collection. It’s as simple as that. For more
information, or to request a collection point box call Clover Environmental
