Quick Facts onQuick Facts on SemakauSemakau LandfillLandfill……..Located 8 km south of Singapore with anarea of 350 hectares, Semakau Landfill is theworld’s first offshore landfill created entirelyfrom the sea space

Construction began in 1995 and landfilloperation started on 1 April 1999

A 7-km perimeter bund lined withimpermeable membrane contains waste withinthe landfill area to keep surrounding waterspollution free

Currently, about 1,400 tons of incinerationash and 600 tons of non-incinerable waste aredisposed of at Semakau Landfill everyday

Through planting and landscaping, westerncoast of Semakau is now a scenic and idyllicrecreational destination with pristine water,fresh air and a green natural environmentthriving with vibrant and rich biodiversity

Opened up in Jul 05 for sport fishing,intertidal walk, bird watching, stargazing andrecreational outing comprising bait fishing,cycling, barbecuing and camping

What You Can Do at Semakau Landfill…

Intertidal WalkThe 3-hour tour of the shoreline of PulauSemakau during low tide would allowvisitors to marvel at the vast mangroves,seagrass, coral reefs, crabs, starfishes,sponges, shrimps and many otherinteresting flora and fauna.

Bird WatchingA total of 66 species of birds have beenrecorded on Semakau Landfill. Theyconsist of migratory birds, shore birds andforest birds who made Semakau Landfilltheir home due to an abundance of fish inthe surrounding waters.

A unique landfill coexisting with vibrantmarine ecosystem, mangroves, grasslandand shoreline habitats, Semakau provideseducational yet fun and exciting outingsunrivalled in other parts of Singapore

Sport FishingPractising catch-and-release activities, sportfishing enthusiasts have documented 17different fish species at Semakau Landfill. Thebarracuda and the Queen Fish are the morecommon game fishes caught at the landfill.

StargazingSemakau Landfill offers an un-obstructview of the clear skies for stargazing. Therefreshing sea breeze and scenic naturalenvironment make stargazing at SemakauLandfill an even more unforgettableexperience!

Educational/Recreational OutingThe educational visit consists of a briefing on thesolid waste management in Singapore and designand operation of Semakau followed by a tour of thelandfill. After the educational programme, visitorshave the option of taking part in relaxingrecreational activities, including fishing, cycling,barbecuing and camping.
