Dear parents, carers and friends of our school,
Welcome back to school for Term 2. We hope that you have all had the opportunity to enjoy me with family and friends and are refreshed and ready for another exci ng and busy term.
ANZAC Day 2016
On ANZAC Day I was very proud to march with our students in the ANZAC Day parade in Nelson Bay. Our school leaders led the school in the parade and laid a wreath on our behalf at the cenotaph. They were also presented with three lovely books that were donated to our school by Nelson Bay RSL Sub Branch, Port Stephens Local Area Command and the Ac on Club of Nelson Bay. Thank you to all students, staff, families and friends who were able to a end and support our school’s involvement in the parade.
School Development Day
Yesterday our staff par cipated in a variety of professional learning ac vi es including the annual mandatory update of CPR and face to face anaphylaxis training. This was provided by Surf Life Saving NSW. This was followed by sessions on reviewing and planning for implemen ng our school plan and a session provided by Lyn Russell (Assistant Principal Learning and Support Teacher) about planning ‘smart goals’ to cater for individual student learning needs. Ms Russell works with schools across Port Stephens area to assist staff (par cularly our Learning and Support Teachers) and students. It was a very produc ve and posi ve day to start the term for our staff.
NAPLAN TESTS 2015
The Na onal Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On Tuesday 17th May, Wednesday 18th May and Thursday 19th May, students will undertake the 2016 NAPLAN tests. Friday 20th May is allocated as a ‘catch up’ day for students who may have missed a test due to unforeseeable circumstances e.g. illness.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in Reading, Wri ng, Language Conven ons (spelling, grammar and punctua on) and Numeracy. NAPLAN assesses skills in Literacy and Numeracy that are developed over me throughout the school. (Please see the
metable for tests below.)
NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in Literacy and Numeracy skills against na onal standards for all Australian children. All students are encouraged to par cipate in the tests. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this informa on to monitor how their child is progressing and to iden fy any areas of concern. Parents may wish to use these results to discuss their child’s progress with the class teacher.
Addi onal informa on for parents about the Na onal Assessment Program can be found on this website: www.naplan.edu.au/parents/

Tree Maintenance Works
During the holidays extensive tree maintenance took place in our playground with the removal of four trees and extensive pruning of a number of trees that were considered to be ‘high risk’ as per the comprehensive arborist report completed at the end of 2015. Our trees will con nue to be monitored and works completed as needed as outlined in the report.

ANZAC Day Poems
On this special day, we bow our heads and pray. We remember all the soldiers who died for us this way.
The sights and sounds they will never forget. They thought it would be an adventure but that they truly regret.
We call this day ANZAC day, we remember the soldiers who died. We
say the words ‘Lest we Forget’ and bow our heads in price.
Tori 5.6H
ANZACs who have lived and died, the rave soldiers who tried
The trenches and bloodstained fields, our heroes that acted like shields
The piercing shouts and screams, the sacrifices and terrible dreams
Nightmares of fighting and pain, the symbols that made them Australian
The bravery that we will remember, and the war that finished 11 November
The bullets shot out of rifles, the missions that ended in fails
War that still hadn’t ceased, we shall remember the deceased
Polina 5.6B
As the stampeding boots of ANZAC’s crush the soil on Turkish territory, Lest we forget.
The sour wind of emotions blow through the remains of a battlefield,
Lest we forget.
The thousands of telegrams that pierced hearts, Lest we forget.
The things that happened on the battlefield, Lest we forget.
The memories that will never fade, Lest we forget.
Poppy’s that will never wilt, Lest we forget.
We will remember them, their light will shine and never dim, Lest we
forget.
