Benefits and Purpose of Ozone Treatment

Ozone (O3) at the Shoal Creek Filter Plant is produced by passing pure oxygen through a 4000 Volt DC electrical discharge which ruptures the individual oxygen molecule and forms two oxygen radicals. These radicals combine with oxygen molecules to form
ozone. (O2 + O = O3)
* Inactivation of cryptosporidium, giardia, viruses, bacteria, and other microbial contaminants.
* Effective in the oxidation of tastes, odor, and colors.
* Aids in the coagulation and flocculation process.
* Eliminates Trihalomethanes when used in place of chlorine as a pre-treatment disinfectant.
Shoal Creek Ozone Facility Facts* (3) Ozonia Generators rated at 2400 lbs/day production capacity.
* Sized for 1 log removal credit of Cryptosporidium.
* (2) One Million Gallon Serpentine Baffled Contactors with 15 minute

Ozone gas from the generator is introduced through a side stream injector into an exter-nal J-Tube applicator for mixing with the raw source water. The ozi-nated water then flows through a one million gallon, serpentine baf-fled contactor to pro-vide disinfection and oxidation contact times.
Unused and unreacted ozone gathers in the upper levels of the contactor. This remaining ozone is collected and passed through a thermal and catalytic ozone
destruct unit for environmentally safe dis-charge well below EPA guidelines.

Rapid Mix Overview* (2) 12’ by 12’ two-stage rapid Mix basins.
* Injection points for Coagulants (Ferric Chloride and Cationic Polymer).
* Coagulants (+ Charge) are rapidly mixed with the incoming flow of water to promote the attraction of suspended particles (- Charge).

The maintenance group is an integral part of the water production process. Maintaining the electrical / electronic mechanical equipment to a high degree of reliability is accomplished via implementation of an aggressive preven-tative maintenance program as well as open communication with the operational group to identify any corrective proce-dures that need to be performed.

Serving Gwinnett CountyThe county distributes safe drinking water to over 800,000 citizens through a network of 3,500 miles of water mains ranging in size from 10” to 78”. Nine booster stations are strategically placed throughout the county to maintain proper water pressures for 250,000 service connections and fire fighting protection. Distribution processes including tank levels and system pressures are monitored and con-trolled 24 hours a day through the county’s computerized SCADA system.

Ozone gas is produced onsite and then injected into the raw water as it flows through (2) one million gallon contactors. The highly effective ozone gas destroys Cryptosporidium, bacteria, and viruses and oxidizes organics, taste, odors and color for a safe and aesthetically pleasing drinking water.
Safe drinking water is distributed to Gwinnett County through a network of 3,500 miles of water mains. Distribution processes including tank levels and system pressures are monitored and controlled 24 hours a day through the county’s computerized SCADA system.
Raw Water is pumped from Lake Lanier’s 35,000-acre reservoir into the plant’s (2) four million gallon equalization storage tanks. Operators set the plant production rate and gravity feed the raw water into the Ozone facility for the first stage of treat-ment.
Water quality parameters are continuously monitored through in-line analyzers which are strategically placed throughout the plant process. Hourly grab sample testing includes; turbidity, pH, electrical conductiv-ity, as well as chlorine, phosphate and fluo-ride residuals. Licensed operators monitor, interpret, and adjust online plant systems to produce the best possible drinking water for the citizens of Gwinnett County.
Filtration is the next stage of treatment where the destroyed microorganisms and other suspended particles are clumped together and then removed as the water passes though the high rate filters consisting of anthracite coal and silica sand.
The ozinated and filtered water is then injected with chlorine, phosphate, lime and fluoride as it flows into (2) ten million gallon clearwells for storage before dis-tribution. These post filtration chemicals protect the piping system from corrosion and the drinking water from bacterial intru-sion during distribution to the citizens of Gwinnett County.
Safe Drinking Water is the key to the continuous improvement of the quality of life for the citizens of Gwinnett County.
