Agenda
Comparing Features & Functions – LSPM vs. OLTS – End Face Inspection
Added value through Wizards Smart Extended Test Regime

Standard Methods
TIA-568-C
Tier-1 Tier-2
ISO 11801 AMD.1 / ISO/IEC 14763-3
BASIC Test Regime EXTENDED Test Regime
LSPM: Light Source & Power Meter or OLTS: Optical Loss Test System
OTDR: Optical Time Domain Reflectometer
Fiber Optic Test Methods
• The two methods are complimentary ! – OTDR based method does not replace the LSPM based solution
• Both methods have advantages and limitations © FlukeNetworks 3

Normative Requirement • ANSI/TIA-526-14-B • ISO 1180 ISO/IEC 14763-3 Ed.1 62 • EN 50173 IEC IEC 61280-4-2
In the past … …Expensive & Bulky
It is highly recommended by many manufacturers in particular when testing highest grade components for very demanding limits
Today … … 1.) Less expensive 2.) Smaller then a mandrel
It helps to prevent 1. FASLE FAILs
… Revenue at risk 2. FALSE PASSes … Reputation at risk
Never … … does not work reliably

Do you have the correct equipment?
Does your equipment have fixed SC input ports? Testing LC links with fixed SC input ports = high risk
to negative loss values Fixed SC Inputs

Do you have the correct equipment? You need to have test equipment with
interchangeable adapters on the input ports – as shown below
Changeable Inputs

Do you have the correct equipment? Using SC to LC adapters (shown below) is not an
option – It’s a very short patch cord – You will be doing a 2 jumper reference, not a 1 jumper

1 or 2 Jumper Reference?
One Jumper Two Jumper No idea what the loss is here you are referencing out

Not selecting the 1-Jumper Method It’s possible BUT…
The user will be warned when trying to use an other method but 1-jumper
Selecting “Don’t show this message again” only lasts until then next power off/on cycle

• You should perform a TRC verification test at regular intervals
• The TRC verification results should be included with your test results – VERSIV CertiFiber PRO’s built in
Set-Reference-Wizard verifies and documents the condition of the TRCs
• As a guide for field testing TRCs
– Multimode ≤ 0.15 dB – Singlemode ≤ 0.25 dB

Assumptions and findings from EMEA VOCs
Only a few understand that “OTDR provide more detailed but less accurate results”
ACEs favor OTDR over OLTS because it has the flair of “detailed” and it “looks like more value”
Manufacturers push for Tier-1 for warranty but will bow to accept OTDR instead of loosing a project
ALL are reluctant to accept the cost of a “true” EXTENDED test Regime consisting of LSPM/OLTS plus OTDR

Example of multiple 30m Links
Example 1 Example 2 Example 3
Basic Test Regime (OLTS)
Link Budget 0.71 dB 0.71 dB 0.71 dB
Measured 0.40 dB 0.66 dB 0.60 dB
Headroom /Margin 0.31 dB 0.05 dB 0.11 dB
Extended Test Regime (OTDR)
Connection 1 0.12 dB 0.27 dB 0.45 dB
Fiber 0.09 dB 0.10 dB 0.10 dB
Copnnection 2 0.19 dB 0.29 dB 0.15 dB
20
• Budget = 0.3 + 0.11 + 0.3 = 0.71dB

Conclusion:
Removes the barrier from using a true Tier-1 plus
Tier-2 Installer will be rewarded for delivering higher
quality and using better practices whilst reducing testing times
