A recommended practice for removing corrosion and subsequently protecting critical bare steel surfaces.

Rust Removal Process

Required:•Loctite Rust Dissolver•Scotchbrite Abrasive Pad•Shop Towels•WD-40 or equal •Masking Tape•X-Acto with new blade•Bristle Brush•Plastic Card (Credit Card)•Foam Brush•Swab (not shown)•Isopropyl Alcohol (not shown)

1. Begin by wiping any excess corrosion or debris from the surface with a shop towel. Heavier corrosion may be scraped first, taking care to protect internal surfaces of the machine from being contaminated with debris.

2. Carefully mask off any critical areas such as Linear Scales, Bearings, etc. that should be protected during the process. Ensure masking is very tight to any features being protected, which can be enhanced by using moderate pressure with a sharp plastic card edge as shown below.

3. With a new blade, carefully trim the masking tightly against the edge of any feature being protected.

4. Apply a generous coating of Loctite Rust Dissolver to the corroded area.

5. Let the Loctite remain for approximately 20 minutes (Minimum 10 minutes recommended by Loctite). After this time the Loctite can be removed with a damp (wet with water) cloth.

6. A Scotchbrite Pad can now be used to cosmetically blend the appearance of the chemically cleaned surface with the adjacent material.

7. Remove the masking tape and inspect for any Loctite Rust Dissolver that may have weeped under the surface of the masking. The Loctite Rust Dissolver is water soluble, and a swab may be used with water to completely remove Dissolver from behind difficult areas such as scale edges.

8. The bare metal surfaces should now be protected with a light oil, WD-40, Boe-Shield or equal. If the treated area is near the Y Axis Scale there will need to be consideration if the machine is in an environment that is resulting in condensation or excess humidity. In such a case careful consideration should be given to applying oil to the Rail surface near the Scale, as any oil that migrates to the Linear Scale will result in Position System errors.
