controlled effectively by treatments, good

dietary habits and exercises.

Today it is prevailing among most of the people.

It leads to many complications which lead to

increase its damage.

So it causes lots of social & economic problems.

Social Problems1.The thought of “a DM patient” will

lead to,-Poor self-image (very common

problem).

-Mental imbalance.-Underestimation about his

health.-Worry, anxiety, shock.

2.She/he cannot consume his

desirable

food & diets.

Every food is not good for DM.

(e.g. refined rice, high fat diets,

3. His/her freedom is limited by,-extra care for preventing from

getting wounds.-spending time for clinics. -preparation for tests (e.g: FBS test

needs at least 12h fasting)

4. Loss of control over personal behavior

treated patients, after only a slight

miscalculation.

Do you know…?Diabetes is increasing in pandemic

proportions .Diabetes kills 3.8 millions people yearly.In 2007, 246 million people worldwide

were affected by diabetes and 308 million people were affected by Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT).

The highest prevalence rates will be in developing countries.

So,It has become one of the most costly

health problems in the world.

It has been estimated that between 5-10% of the total healthcare spending of the world is spent on diabetes related conditions.

E.g.: Direct costs of medical care for people with diabetes was $85.7 billion in 1992 in United States.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) global cost of diabetes accounts for 2-3% of the total health care budget in every country. Eco

1. Substantial expenditures on, -tests (FBS, oral glucose tolerance test

(OGTT) -drugs(Biguanides, MetforminHCL, Chlorpropamide,

Glibenclamide,Gliclazide,Glipizide, Tolbutamide)

-hospital fees,-nursing homes.

2.He/she need to take a separate diet with

low & optimum glucose- which need an extra

money. (Oats, cereals, legumes, wholegrain products,

dried beans, peas, lentils, fruits, vegetables)

Message For You All……….!Patients starting tablet or insulin treatment

should be encouraged to live as normal a life as possible, but this is not easy.

Diabetes, like any chronic disease, has psychological consequences(eg: stress, mental retardation).

Tact, empathy, encouragement and practical support are needed from all members of the society.
