Which social media tools will depend on which you can access, but the following are tools you may be able to access:

Uses for Teaching

The following outlines some of the uses for each:

Like Youtube, use a video camera to create web-video content to upload to TeacherTube.

Create assignments that are only available via Twitter

Send “extra credit” assignments via Twitter

Teach students about the power of web pages and web-content by having each create and manage a Wordpress website.

What Students Need to Learn

To be successful in the graphic arts community as well as in any profession, the following are skills that social media will help develop:

•Networking – Tools such as LinkedIn are important tools in business to create a network of business professionals, professional groups, and potential hiring opportunities

•Professional Credibility – The more recognizable your name is on internet searches, you will be seen as having a strong reputation and as a credible source

•Knowledge of Multi-Channel Communication – the more web savvy a student becomes, the more knowledge he or she will gain of the strength of multi-channel communication
